View Full Version : Hypnotism and Boxing
onikami 01-23-2005, 03:52 PM Why dont boxers use hypnotists to gain an advantage over their opponants?
Just before a match in the dressing room, hynotise them and tell them to fight like 10 tigers or 10 elephants.
****, they will go into the ring with super mental strength and we know in boxing, mental strength can be just as vital as human strength.
I remember seeing a film with Richard Pryor or Bill Crosby about a weak boxer that is hypnotised into making him believe he is s tiger!

It's interesting topic I wonder what would happen if a fighter was hypnotised.

You mean a boxer steps into the ring, stand still at the center with a pendulum or a coin on a string, then says to his opponent, "Look into my eyes!", then starts swinging the pendulum back and forth...not only the opponent is hypnotized, but also the referee, the judges, the spectators, the TV viewers, etc.!!!!!
I think I'm hypnotized by your thread right now...yawn...zzzzzzz... :p
Boxerdog 01-23-2005, 04:40 PM McCline HAS tried it.
Apparently it is not all that effective.
dustymoo 01-23-2005, 06:33 PM It's debatable whether it works or not. But i'm sure British boxing fans will remember Steve Collins, one of the most unskillful fighters to ever challenge for a world title, beating a far superior Chris Eubank. Aparantly, he'd been hypnotized before hand. Thus being able to make up for that gulf in class, and throw punches non-stop for twelve rounds.
The Fix 01-23-2005, 06:35 PM i think it would hinder the fighters chance in winning because he wouldnt follow a gameplan and he would think that he is invincible when he is not and get ktfo
dustymoo 01-23-2005, 06:37 PM That is a good point!
BrooklynBomber 01-23-2005, 06:52 PM it is a common myth that hypnosis works on everybody. Hypnosi only works on weakminded people and boxers like most of the athletes have very strong will. So even if they want to get hypnotised their mind just wont let them. Also hypnosis hinders the ability to reason and analyse which is crucial for every boxer.
jack_the_rippuh 01-23-2005, 06:53 PM Marvin Hagler probably used that ****..
I wouldn't be suprised considering how he looked like a machine at times..

BrooklynBomber 01-23-2005, 10:50 PM Thats where "the eye of a tiger" comes from :D
