View Full Version : Respect for Calzaghe
DiegoFuego 02-28-2006, 10:24 AM This is just something little that's been bugging me. Everybody advertising this fight is putting Lacy's name first, a spot reserved for the champion. I know they're both title holders, but Calzaghe has been the recognized champ at 168 for years. Just another sign that he's getting very little respect right now, although a lot of it is warranted. He DID pull out with a bogus hand injury that had everyone ready to say LACY IS THE MAN AT 168 OFFICIALLY, and I felt like it too. I think that's why Calzaghe is taking the fight. He knows if he doesn't, no one will consider him the man. I know a week before the fight is too late to change the posters that have LACY-CALZAGHE written on them, but let's at least do our part and respect Calzaghe up and through the fight, win or lose, for having earned that title a long time ago. Just remember, we never took away Roy Jones' recognition as the man at 168-175 even though he never took on his biggest challenges at those weights until Tarver. I respected Roy up until he got crushed by Tarver over and over, so I will do the same for Calzaghe. But mark my words: if Calzaghe loses one-sidedly and by KO, a lot of people are going to question his legacy just like Roy's is in question now.
enadeus 02-28-2006, 11:01 AM He gets no respect because he has never fought outside of Europe, and spent most of his career in England. Thats the bottom line, also people claim that he has never fought anybody.

I fully understand why people would hold this view and you have every right to think this. But Joe will win you over come March 4th. When Joe wins you WILL show him some respect otherwise you will have no credibility.
:)
TheEvilSaint 02-28-2006, 11:09 AM he fights bums, beats bums, fakes injuries, ducks fighters, pads his record, slaps his punches, and fights once or twice a year?
if you respect a guy who does that, i guess anybody can get ur respect.
cal***gy hasnt fought a decent opponent his whole career and when he finally does against lacy, everyone will see just how big of a joke cal***gy is.
medium-deek 02-28-2006, 11:09 AM Ps. I'm now going out to buy a toothbrush.

Man, I'm gonna enjoy seeing you with egg on your face.

you expect cal***gy to win? what has he done that would even make you think that? (aside from being english)
El Guapo 02-28-2006, 11:11 AM Man, I'm gonna enjoy seeing you with egg on your face.
there we go, i said there would be another thread before the fight in th so called "final predictions" thread!
SnoopySmurf 02-28-2006, 11:12 AM This will be an awesome fight! Lacy can be wild sometimes...and this could play right into Joe's style. I've seen only a few of Joe's fight but I've seen enough boxing to know he has is no easy match for Lacy. Lacy may be stronger, obviously younger...but Joe is a damn good fighter.
I have no idea who'll win. Maybe I give the edge to Lacy in youth and stamina. But I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Joe Calzaghe wins.

I've explained that in another post, Mr Saint. But quickly: he is the better fighter and his southpaw stance will cause Lacy major problems. Now I really do need to go out and buy that toothbrush. But believe me, when Calzaghe wins you are gonna gt a PM from me with the following in bold, block captial letter:
"BWHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA"

why are you planning to celebrate something that will never happen?
his southpaw stance? thats whats gonna give him the win, in ur opinion? ur grasping at straws and overestimating joke cal***gy's "abilities".
SnoopySmurf 02-28-2006, 11:28 AM He's no joke, man. You may not like him but Joe Calzaghe is no push over.
RAESAAD 02-28-2006, 11:31 AM Respect given. :boxing:

It's strange to me, really strange. When he pulled out with the hand injury, I figured he'd retire or etc before facing Lacy. Now we're 4 days until the big fight, and he's strangely confident. Something isn't right here. I'm starting to think he faked the hand injury not out of fear, but because he wanted more time for preparation to beat Lacy's style. Maybe I'm wrong, usually I'm not about these things.
MickyHatton 02-28-2006, 11:34 AM I've said it many times but here we go again, Joe Calzaghe is a class fighter and a good champion, just becuase he hasn't beaten a big name doesn't mean he can't!
I have seen 90% of Joe's fights and I am certain that Lacy is in for one hell of a battle!

Ditto that!
SquareCircle 02-28-2006, 11:39 AM if hes been working on movement and punching in bunches to escape corners he just might have a chance, he should be working on not getting hit clean, rollin with shots etc, like Bell did after the brown bout. thats how bell beat the heavily favored mormeck. but if he gets hits and stands and trades instead of recovers with mobility he's done, lacy punches like a ****in animal.

and what about jeff lacy ? how far out the USA has he fought?

You ****head. What about Lacy,he has only fought outside US once against a American bum (Donnell Wiggins) in Manchester, England
EXIGE 02-28-2006, 11:48 AM Respect goes out to both fighters. You can look at it either way, Lacy has stepped up to the plate and challenged "The man", and Calzaghe has stepped up to the plate and challenged "The knockout man, who is up and coming".
Both deserve respect, just for taking the fight with each other. All I know is its gonna be a war, and to those saying it ends in 3 or 6 by Lacy KO, I can almost guarantee that wont happen, but what happens after the 6th remains to be seen. :boxing:
Personally, like I said in the other thread, its a Calzaghe Ud after a great fight.
SquareCircle 02-28-2006, 11:51 AM i hate to do it to my countryman but im going with calzaghe too

To be fair Lacy hasn't fought stellar opposition himself.
Take a look at some of thier common opponents
Joe Calzaghe
Omar Sheika in 2000- TKO 5
Robin Reid in 1999- Unanimous Decision
Jeff Lacy
Omar Sheika in 2004- Unanimous Decision
Robin Reid in 2005- TKO 8
I would say Joe Calzaghe has faced the fresher guy in thier common opponents.

lacy's been around for a little over 5 years. cal***gy has been around for a little over 13 years. and it takes him 13 years to finally step up his level of competition?
joke's been around a lot longer than lacy and has more opportunities for "big name" fights. don't expect lacy to have the greatest resume at 28 years old and being a pro boxer for only 5 of those 28 years.

And that's really all there is to it.
People are comparing records....that's ridiculous. Lacy's already fought better competition up to this point in his career as opposed to Calzaghe did.

well thats not true is it?, who has Lacy fought that is better than anyone Joe has fought.
Sheika was alot more dangerous when Joe fought him as was Reid.
TheEvilSaint 02-28-2006, 06:00 PM well thats not true is it?, who has Lacy fought that is better than anyone Joe has fought.
read my statement above.

:)Yes my friend, I will respect Cal if he wins.
Crumble 02-28-2006, 06:11 PM People lay the blame very heavily at Joe's doorstep. I misread RWK's post actually, but generally Frank Warren fighters get moved slowly anyway, but its not like Joe is a ***, in the ring he is the man and he will be whoever you put him in there with Tocker Pudwill or Jeff Lacy he will stand and fight and entertain, Joe missed the great era of super middles, he caught the death rattle with a fight against Eubank, but since there have been no superstars in the division, also Joe doesnt have the same kind of backing as Ricky Hatton for example if he did fights with Jones and Hopkins would have happend, he should have gone to America for sure but its not to late. If Calzaghe get owned I will admit that maybe he isn't a great fighter but he won't and I won't have to.
medium-deek 02-28-2006, 06:15 PM Yes my friend, I will respect Cal if he wins.
Now there is another resonable man. Now, you think anyone can get that Saint bloke to do the same? Nah. He is as stuborn as a mule.
Crumble 02-28-2006, 06:16 PM Did you misunderstand what I typed?
yep acknowledged lol
It's called reading comprehension. When Joe had 21 fights....he fought nothing but Garbage men.
yep but he was alot younger than Lacy, and Frank Warren builds everyone up at least 20-0 before he puts them in with anyone live.
TheEvilSaint 02-28-2006, 06:17 PM Now there is another resonable man. Now, you think anyone can get that Saint bloke to do the same? Nah. He is as stuborn as a mule.
and ur as blind as a bat. looking at joke's past fights, you think he can withstand the power of lacy (and hes hardly faced the hardest of punchers, anyway)?
Crumble 02-28-2006, 06:18 PM Mitchell was definetely a big puncher.
TheEvilSaint 02-28-2006, 06:19 PM Mitchell was definetely a big puncher.
mitchell put joke down for the 1st time in his career. just imagine what lacy will do.
Crumble 02-28-2006, 06:29 PM mitchell put joke down for the 1st time in his career. just imagine what lacy will do.
we shall see, Mitchell had Joe in trouble and he reacted well, Lacy will definetely have Joe in trouble in the fight and I say he react the same again.
We've Got Bush 02-28-2006, 09:42 PM Joe gets my respect, yeah he only fought in europe, but hey he fought some good people and beat them. I am still picking Lacy to win, but you cant count out Joe.
DaWayne 02-28-2006, 09:55 PM Why should he get any respect he has never fought outside of Europe.Plus he turned down any real fight (Johnson). But praise him for finally getting his courage together and not fighting Mario Veit,Kabary Salem or a washed Chris Eubank but finally his first real challange.
BLOODSHED 02-28-2006, 10:56 PM What will be funny is when Lacy KTFO of Calzaghe. His career will be torn down and he will be exposed for creating a carefully manufactured career.
His career will be erased in 7 rounds.
