Agreed. I don't know any recent presidents who wouldn't take the crown if offered, espically Dubyah.

Johnson? Johnson was horrible, really. My favorite line from Jack Newfield was when he asked Nixon, "So, when did they let you out of the can?" Here's my list:

Lincoln
JFK
FDR
Eisenhower
Truman
Clinton

I honestly have to agree with that list; but you forgot Thomas Jefferson. The only two I'd have a real problem with are Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon; but as much as I'm not fond of either I have to give props to Johnson for advancing the Civil Rights movement and props to Nixon for opening the door to China.

If I were to rank them:

1. Franklin D. Roosevelt

2. Thomas Jefferson

3. Teddy Roosevelt

4. Abraham Lincoln....seeing the country through a civil war guarantee's top-5 worthiness.

5. George Washington....might deserve higher ranking due to newness of nation.

6. Woodrow Wilson.....an underated visionary

7. Ronald Reagan......lousy with domestic econonic policy; but he had a mess to clean up, and foreign policies contributed to collapse of the Soviet Union.

8. Andrew Jackson....lousy policy concerning Native Americans..downright shameful, to be honest; but he did do more to give power to the common man and broke up the Federal Bank System, if I'm not mistaken, which resulted in a more stable economy.

9. John F. Kennedy....lousy in the sense of getting us involved in Vietnam; but did stand up to the Soviet Union and despite the Bay of Pigs, did stand fast and resolve the Cuban Missle Crisis.

10. Jame K. Polk.....did wrongfully invade Mexico; but also succesfully added to the geographic size of the country in doing so....could be bad, I suppose; but I'm looking at it in retrospect from a U.S. citizen's point of view.

Yeah, damn shame the country didn't jump on board with his "League of Nations" idea....that and I really wish he'd stood up for Germany more at the signing of the Treaty of Versile (sp). If the allies had treated Germany less harshly, Hitler might never have rose to power and WWII could have been avoided.

...but, hindsight's always 20/20.

The League of Nations is now manifest in the UN, and organizations with external parties is pointlessly ineffective.

Well, technically, no. The UN is based upon the idea of the League of Nations; but the League collapsed because the U.S. never joined it.

Honestly, I'd have to research for specific differences; but I don't believe any nation had "veto power" under the original League. I'm sure there were several other differences; but it's been 15 years since I've studied history, so forgive me. :)

Presidential scholars, both liberal and conservative, rank Richard Nixon near the bottom of the list because of the scandals, but most agree that he presents a special problem because his foreign policy and domestic policy successes stand in dramatic contradiction to the corruption of his top aides and Nixon himself. Political scientist Walter Dean Burnham noted the "dichotomous or schizoid profiles. On some very important dimensions both Wilson and L.B. Johnson were outright failures in my view; while on others they rank very high indeed. Similarly with Nixon." Historian Alan Brinkley said: "There are presidents who could be considered both failures and great or near great (for example, Wilson, Johnson, Nixon)." James MacGregor Burns observed of Nixon, "How can one evaluate such an idiosyncratic president, so brilliant and so morally lacking?"[21

Richard Nixon came from humble beginnings and was the true American Dream. He resented the silver spoon Types like the Kennedys and the Bush Families and was a very complex individual. Not the best but he is my favorite to read about. He was an overachiever who made it to the top. He never fit in with the elitist ilk and was hurt because of this.

No, he took part. The only difference between Nixon and just about every other president is he got caught. Read BuddyChacon's post on Slick Dick...he's pretty spot-on.
