for me, its muhammad hands down. the young clay who faced liston was perhaps the greatest fighter of all time, and ali's career wins, as well as his losses, are against the best hw's of all time.

Like comparing apples, oranges, and pears. Different people in different eras. Ali is the best champion from the perspective of all-around person, inside and outside of boxing.

I like pears. Apples are too common. And oranges hurt my teeth when I eat too many because of the citric acid.

My choice is Ali at Number Two behind Joe.

Ali has the greatest achivements over his whole career, plus he was ****ing amazing at hus best.

Louis was also an incredible fighter, and held the title for 12 years, but he didnt IMO have the opposion that Ali overcame.

ali was the best.

but joe louis was the greatest.

I'd say just the opposite. No fighter will ever surpass the "greatness" of Ali, but I think Louis is probably the better fighter.

It's so hard to compare different eras, but Ali never really faced a puncher who had the power in the short, straight punches that Louis did. And judging from the trouble Ali had with Clark and Frazier's left hooks, then Dempsey could've given him acres worth of trouble. Ali almost always found a way to come through, though, and with everything he did for the sport then you HAVE to say he's the "greatest." But that doesn't mean he'd beat any HW.

Both were great and had their impact on society, my pick would be Ali. From the footage I saw from louis he didn't have as much lateral movement that Ali had, but either fighter is an understandable choice.

They were both the best of their era, neither was ever accused of ducking anyone, and both had their frailties. Ali was succeptable to the left hook, Lewis to the straight right. Both were men of conviction, and both fought on beyond their prime. Both were KOed in the end by their nemesis, or men who looked up to them in their own youth, Holmes and Marciano. Personally I rate Lewis a little higher, and I saw both. Ali was a slapper and Lewis a puncher. They also both had fighters seemingly beneath their stature who made them look ordinary. Just my opinion.

talent wise i think its louis. but he fought bums for most of career, due to lack of oposition

i think ali had more oppurtunity to prove how great he was

very close and hard to call, but i voted louis

and why is tyson up there instead of a dempsey or a tunney?

ali was next to liston the whole time he was down. but when foley was knocked down for the 2nd time in round 7, i think he was on his back... maybe not though...

EDIT: o yea, that cant be liston because walcott was the ref, and that ref is white. maybe it is foley

Very tough to call imo, although I would probably put Louis at number 1, due to the fact that he was just do dominant, and dominated the division for so long. To me he is the textbook for what heavyweight boxing is about, he made good fighters look horrible, he was so powerful that he knocked out fighters like Max Baer for instance, who were percieved to be iron chinned. He alongwith a young Mike Tyson were sthe best finishers ever imo, when they had you hurt, they smelled blood, and wouldn't allow you to escape that ring. I would also say that he is the best ever in regards to rematches, he may have struggled a bit with you the first time around, but the next time around he would have you figured out, and knock you out. For me, the three best were Ali, Louis, and Marciano in any order.

Not a bad, list, I like that you give Larry Holmes his props, as I think people don't give him the respect that he deserves, was piling on the wins while taking on all comers. He never ducked any fighter and took on fighters that were very much being ducked by many fighters. Anyways,I would definitely lower Lennox Lewis and Tyson on that list, while raising Foreman, Johnson, and Frazier above them as they all have much better resumes than Tyson and Lewis.
