Why dont boxers get a tub of vaseline and spread it all over their face before the start of a fight?
Surely, this would lessen the impact of any punches thrown? The put vaselinbe on when they are cut about the eye or anywhere else on the face. So why not the entire face before the fight start?
Would that be illegal?

it is indeed illegal and if you notice sometimes the ref will make the fighters wipe off some of the vaseline.

Vasiline is not illegal in the pros. Excessive vasiline is not allowed because gobs of it could possibly get into a fighters eyes but reasonable amounts are permitted. In the dressing rooms before the fights we would always "grease up" my face and in addition to that my trainer would rub me down with baby oil so that the other fighter would not be able to hold me as well when he was trying to clinch me. I fought on the inside alot and being slippery helped.......... Rockin'

As rockin said, Vaseline is used prior to the fight. It serves the dual purpose of making the skin slicker so flush blows glide off rather than grab and tear the skin, and it adds elasticity to the skin for the same end result.

My trainer puts alot of vaseline on my face before fights, which is bad for my acne. In the corner, when I'm cut, he puts this vaseline mixture with adrenaline in it to stop my cuts.

In most pro fights they do put vasciline all over, especially around the eyes, it is just a little harder to see on TV, because I guess you are used to seeing it be shiny.
As far as putting gobs of it on, you don't get any more benefit from having ten times as much as you need on.
think of it this way, if it would give a fighter an advantage, the trainers would do it.
