they where patiently around somewhere waiting for the man to take the tourch from previous glories of Philippine Boxing...

then came the meteoric rise of PAC MAN, so did boxing in the Philippines, now everybody, fans and boxers alike can dream once more ...

Thanks Iwatchboxing...Couldn't have said it better myself.,
And to answer the question of the thread starter further....Pac flamed up the passion of the old boxing fans and created a LOT of new boxing fans in the Philippines. ;)

When Barrera was still at jr. featherweight, we're already cheering for Luisito Espinosa then WBC featherweight champ and Gerry Penalosa WBC Flyweight champ...but we're not an army yet that time. And when an unknown Pinoy journeyman named Rolando Pascua KTFO'd Chiquita Gonzalez...that was sweet.:)

Yes our bet is on.

I didn't even think about tax being included, but thats a good point. So we will donate a little more and then send back whatever is left over.

Points will be donated the night of the fight or day after.

i started rooting for pinoy boxers when rolando navarette defeated boza edwards and much even excited when he defended the junior lightweight championship here in the philippines by ko-ing choi of south korea! even if pacquiao didn't make it big in the boxing world, i would still be here because i really like boxing! why the need for this thread, do you think we're just here because pacquiao is making a name for himself?

he was asking because obviously he was ignorant about it. before basketball was a big hit in the philippines in the early 70's...pinoys were big fans of sweet science even up to now..with or without pacman. there you go...you're less ignorant now. :D

Personally, I am not down with the strict nationalistic fan base thing.

Tyson is an American but I never really liked him.

Miguel Cotto is my favorite active boxer even though he is from PR.

I would have loved Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roy Jones Jr. regardless of where they came from because they were excellent fighters who were very entertaining to watch.

That's just me though.

btw, I'm not rying to put anyone down, so please don't be offended. Just expressing my opinion.

I also loved Ali, SGL, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Salvador Sanchez, Alexis Arguello, Aron Pyor the young Tyson and a lot more, but buddy what's wrong to love your own figther, specially the one giving honor to your country ???

we have the "nationalistic fan base thing" in soccer why not in boxing ???

There is nothing wrong with it, i'm just saying that I don't factor in country of origin when deciding what fighters I like.

There are cool and uncool, entertaining and boring, highly skilled and mediocre individuals/teams in every country.

I tend to root for the USA come the olympics, but if an American team/individual acts like a jerk I will root against them. I was actually happy that the iraqi soccer team had some measure of success in Athens, after hearing about all the hardship and abuse they had taken under Saddam.

One last thing. I'm glad you mentioned soccer because the nationalistic obsession that goes with it has led to serious riots and deaths. Is it really worth it over a game or a boxing match? There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country and fellow countrymen, but on the other hand just because an athlete is from your own country doesn't mean you have to support him/her. That's all I'm saying.

In the late 70's and 80's they were rooting for Leonard, In the 90's they were rooting for Tyson, and now they are rooting proudly for one of their countryman. And there ain't nothing wrong with that!

i do get your point but in a country like the Philippines per se we are seperated by about 7,000 islands and about 100 different dialects, a few times every generation we find ourselves joined together on a common cause setting aside our differences, now we see Manny as one of the guys, achieving something great for self and country, what the people see is hope, and they can start to dream once more ...

Manny was definelty a name in the PI before he beat MAB, he was already a 2 time World Boxing Champ, you have to see how we receive our champion when he goes back home, its a big fiesta ...

but you gotta remember that we Pinoys are scattered around 7,000 island and have about 100 different regional dialects, but its safe to assume that PAC is know by about 50% of the populace before the MAB fight.

That was pretty much what I meant. I figured that he had fought plenty of times in his own country, so he may have been pretty well known before Barrera to the people that live there.
Oh, I can just imagine the party you guys throw for him when he returns home...one hell of a "shin-dig", I'd say! It's perfectly understandable why your peoples do that too! ;)

i really don't understand why we do it, but specially for people who brings something home to be proud of, we go gaga over it with all media hype until the next best or worst thing that comes along ...

"ga ga"..I like that! :D Hey, he did blow Barrea out of the ring (no easy feat) and before that accomplished alot, even though I'm a fan of JMM and Morales, that doesnt mean that I dont totally "get" why some of you love Pac so much. I'm about to have access to alot of his earlier fights, etc...and if he proves me wrong about being one dimensional I'll be glad (although slightly embarrassed) to admit it in a post ;)

I was thinking about that and it occurred to me that it must be like having a great fighter or athlete from your home town or home state in the USA. For example Rocky marciano and marvin hagler are like gods in Brockton, Mass. and Larry Holmes was worshiped in Easton, PA.

Thats what I've been thinking. Which is one of the main reasons i dislike Pacquiao. Once Mab was beaten by him a bunch of Filipino fans popped up thinking hes god. I generally have nothing against Filipinos though its just the ones that d/r Manny to death.

I dont dislike Manny or his fans..theyre just passionate, thats all. The thing I do dislike is when other great fighters are insulted to pump Manny up..now that does get to me. I've even read some nasty things about Morales (where Manny is concerned) and it's just not necessary, not at all!

that win over MAB established PAC as a top 10 p4p fighter and put the Philippines back in the WORLD BOXING MAP, so its was really big for us ...

i am not really bothered by the fact that PAC is being labeled one dimensional, this just make everything that he has done even greater, 1 dimensional beating of MAB, 1 dimensional 3 KD in one round of JMM, and soon to come 1 dimensional KO of EM (this is a prediction and i am puting half my points on it, the other half on a PAC win by decision)...

don't be embarrassed about that all, great figthers have their own critics during their time including ALI, and sometimes peeps want to be see more proof before becoming a believer ...
