View Full Version : Super Middleweights Finally In The Spotlight
BIGPOPPAPUMP 02-08-2006, 05:40 AM When the bell sounds for round one of the Joe Calzaghe-Jeff Lacy fight on March 4, the super middleweight division will finally get the chance to shine and show the world that they are a division that is ready to be considered among the best in boxing.
Joe Calzaghe, of Wales, and Jeff Lacy, of St. Petersburg, Fla., will decide who reigns supreme among the super middleweights. Calzaghe, rated #1 by Ring Magazine, has been the standard bearer the last few years but it has quickly become Lacy, rated #3 by Ring, who has been making waves with his Tysonesque approach towards fighting. Calzaghe, 40-0 31 KO's, and Lacy, 21-0 17 KO's, have been linked together for the past year as talk of a fight between the two started to materialize. Joe has been trying to prove his place in boxing's hierarchy by beating the best available opponents while Jeff has continuously called out the Welshman.
The division has needed an injection of excitement to bring it to the forefront of boxing. It has struggled to find an audience due in part to alphabet titleholders like Sven Ottke, who refused to venture outside of his homeland to defend his belt. LOL.....I can't wait for this fight.
JuicyJuice 02-08-2006, 07:40 AM I think Lacy would be humiliated against Brahmer and Froch, but hey.
theironone 02-08-2006, 07:48 AM frochs defence is far too slack although his style would be very hard for lacy if he could take lacys punch which i dont think he could
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 02-08-2006, 07:55 AM 168 is good now because of TWO guys... back in the first half of the 1990's it was good because of MICHAEL NUNN, JAMES TONEY, ROY JONES, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubanks, Iran Barkley, Darrin Van Horn, Lindell Holmes, Frank Tate, Steve Collins, Frank Liles, Michael Watson, etc. etc.

People have been saying that for as long as I've been watching Frochy, and that's since 1999. The guy went to the senior World championships in a very casual manner, having never taken training seriously, and the guy got to the semi-finals of the senior World championships with his hands by his waist (and was apparently robbed). Now, we all know that the Olympics are easy compared to the senior World championships. Frochy, with his hands by his waist, became the first guy from Britain to ever win a medal at the senior World championships. Say what you want about his hands being too low, but he was an elite amateur with little training and is now an undefeated pro who rarely gets hit. He's in the top 10 in his division, and he hasn't even been close to being wobbled at all yet.
It's going to be very hard to beat Froch - he's been blessed with a solid chin, swift reflexes and natural confidence. I say good luck to Jeff Lacy if he has the guts to finally face him (we all know that he chickened out of their fight in October 2000 in that USA-vs-England meet in Liverpool, after Frochy KTFO Rubin Williams).
theironone 02-08-2006, 08:17 AM i actually think he has felt puches not wobbled but he has felt them and hes not faced many big punchers, he does get hit too much imo for his style and when he steps up to the world top 5-8 thats when were going to find out how good he is, i know all about his bad training habits as an am they are well documented and you do get to here these things too i hope he does well but we'll see, the next 12 - 18 months will be very telling i dont think hed beat either lacy, kessler or cal at the moment he needs an ex world champ or two who isnt toally shot to be tested against

AIR_KENG 02-08-2006, 08:19 AM haven't seen enough fights of these two to make my pick... any help would do... :D

It is so funny! Lacy fans know only Lacy... And still call him #1 in the world..
RAESAAD 02-08-2006, 10:53 AM I think Lacy would be humiliated against Brahmer and Froch, but hey.
You think too much unfortunately..........
alt10ate 02-08-2006, 11:26 AM I adapted my fighting style to calzaghes, and its actually effective.
and no its not "slapping"
restless_438 02-08-2006, 11:31 AM THREE guys. You forgot Kessler.
and Chad Dawson.. this is more of a division than just two guys.. way better than alot of other divisions right now in terms of talent.
ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY 02-08-2006, 11:57 AM Yeah, but Chad isn't THERE yet. Calzaghe and Lacy are the TWO 168 pounders that matter right now.
theironone 02-08-2006, 11:58 AM kesslers not bad tho ice

You've gotta be kidding. With Lacy, Kessler, and Calzaghe, this is one of the most entertaining and competitive divisions in boxing, without question. As a Lacy fan, I'm a little biased, but I do think he's the best in the weight class. A lot of casual fans are writing Calzaghe off, but he is very dangerous. He has tremendous hand speed, and is a very good fighter. I look for Lacy to win, but I don't think it will be nearly as easy as most people think. Mikkel Kessler looks to me to be the #2 guy in the division, so I'd love to see him take on Lacy. I think "Left Hook" would win, but it too would be a great fight. I would also like to see Kessler-Calzaghe. I think any of the three would tear Markus Beyer apart, so unification is possible, but it probably won't happen. Froch, Brahmer, Green, Mundine, pemberton, Manfredo, and others make this a very interesting and competitive division.

Out of curiosity, are there any boxers outside of the UK that are any good in your eyes?

Or outside of Europe for that matter.

Not to mention punching power, see what he did to Damon Hague?

VERY few fighters in the UK are any good in my eyes.

How funny that RING Magazine rates Kessler ahead of Lacy then...
JuicyJuice 02-08-2006, 12:59 PM I rate Kessler ahead of Lacy but I don't necessarily rate Kessler, and Calzaghe has looked a shadow of his former self in his last three fights. So, I really do think that Froch and Brahmer are the best two in the division even though they are still considered just prospects.

That's cool. I guess that's just more your area of expertise. Thanks for the reply.
JuicyJuice 02-08-2006, 01:07 PM VERY few fighters in the UK are any good in my eyes.
The very few fighters that are good, though, are very good (Benn, Eubank, Herol Graham, Hamed, Calzaghe, Hatton, Froch and Khan spring to mind, of recent years).
