Hey guys

I've been practicing my jab on the heavy bag. Now with the Jab, your wrist gradually pronates so that at full extension of the jab, your knuckles and fist are horizontal.

Now when i hit the heavybag, i obviously don't make impact with the bag with my fist with my jab at full extension, that would lack power, it's just before (correct me if i'm wrong). At that point in my jab, my wrist has pronated fully so my fist is impacting the heavybag at a angle just short of horizontal

Is this a problem ? should i be pronating my wrist faster and earlier during my jab ?

Cheers

ehh.. a perfect jab is perfectly horizontal.. but like most things in this world, nothing is perfect. If your jab is slightly off being perfectly horizontal it should be fine.. but you should work on making it perfect because a perfectly horizontal jab has that snap to it that gives it more power. Just look at how perfectly excecuted Floyd Mayweathers jab is.

Since i posted my original post, i've found this video

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1952617255458063580&q=boxing

In it, the guy shows the jab at full extension ending with your fist being thumb down, therefore another quarter turn of wrist pronation than what i am doing.

This therefore gets your fist horizontal at impact point which is before full extension

Is this guy right on the money ? or does the amount of wrist pronation or corkscrew action you get taught vary from trainer to trainer ?

i dont think its that he had a problem with it.. he just wants to make sure he is doing it correctly.. cork-screwing the jab could be hard for some people.. i know it was for me.

Guys, i'm a boxing newbie :)

i've done other martial arts throughout my life but have only recently started boxing.

I'm loving it :D but i know the importance in any sport of getting the fundamentals right, right from the start, that's why i'm putting a lot of time into basic footwork, the jab and the cross.
