View Full Version : Winky Wright--why rated so high p4p??
simeraksou 01-31-2006, 09:27 PM Why is Wright rated so high on many people's p4p list? Is it because he beat two smaller fighters in Trinidad and Mosley? I don't understand why some people put him as #1 or #2... He's a one dimensional, forward plodding fighter with a good jab (which he relies on, hardly throwing power shots) and a tight defense.
BLOODSHED 01-31-2006, 09:29 PM Pretty damn good question...
How come so few people are eager to fight him?

The risk/reward ratio is not worth it. He's a boring fighter (and so doesn't draw much money) and would not be an easy fight because of his tight defense.
Zab Super Judah 01-31-2006, 09:34 PM he's is high because he thoroughly dominated mosley and trinidad. Some even say he was the first to beat Vargas. I personally don't rate him Top 3 because those spots go to people like mayweather, barrera, pac in no particular order
and would not be an easy fight because of his tight defense.
Right there is the answer to why he is rated so high. His defense, and that makes him an obstacle for virtually anyone he faces. Definitely a criteria in formulating a P4P list.
You're only referring to his opposition.
Hell, John Ruiz has the best record of any true heavyweight in the division right now......and yet conscensus is he is by no means the best heavyweight.
BLOODSHED 01-31-2006, 09:38 PM High defense, no offense which is why I date rate him too highly.

AintGottaClue 01-31-2006, 09:39 PM cause he is so hard to beat, his 3 loses 1 is by UD in which he was kncoked down 5 times and yet the scores will still close! a MD lose to this hary simon guy who i guess i heard was suppose to be good, and a MD to varg-ass which some peeps see winky winning
he also has wins over fighters that are good and great 50-3 is a good record

i agree completely.
the top three should be pbf, pac, mab... very close
ELPacman 01-31-2006, 09:41 PM I don't see how he could be ranked high at the moment as he beats a Tito that came out of retirement to pummel a nonranked p4p Mayorga. He then takes on a no name, Sam Soliman and was nearly beat. His really shining moments were his 2 wins over Mosley...Mr. Sour Shane Mosley that is.
yeah he hasn't been fighting complete stiffs either. Angel Hernandez, Bronco McKart, and Jc Candelo were nothing to sneeze at. Especially at the time they fought.
Dirt E Gomez 01-31-2006, 09:45 PM Mosley x2, Trinidad, and fights that could've gone either way with Harry Simon and Vargas.
He's been all around the world and beaten many solid opponents. He's got no major flaw in his gameplan that any person can point out and at this points seems almost unbeatable at middle weight. 50-3 also is one of the best active fighter's record and he hasn't lost in 5+ years.

He is one dimesional in the sense you don't really have to worry about his power but he is one of the soundest, most skilled fighters out right now and he Wins which is really all that matters and he does not win close or undecisive he wins....... period and will beat taylor IMO.
Easy-E 01-31-2006, 09:48 PM yeah he hasn't been fighting complete stiffs either. Angel Hernandez, Bronco McKart, and Jc Candelo were nothing to sneeze at. Especially at the time they fought.
fighting mccart three times is hardly something to brag about. i want to see what restless has to say about this one
Mishra100 01-31-2006, 09:51 PM Because he has skill! His defense is outstanding and he still has the ability to score points. Winky is a true BOXER. Which some of you don't think boxing is about.... boxing. But instead, knocking someone out.
AintGottaClue 01-31-2006, 09:53 PM i thought he only foguht mckart twice, won once by UD then won by DQ cause mckart had 5 points taken away from him

Mckart is fairly game bro........He lingered around the fringe for years and would be in Winkys spot possibly had he been better than Winky........Which of course he is and was not. :D

no they fought three times. the first by sd, second by md and third by dq

my mistake ^^
Manny_P 01-31-2006, 10:02 PM Winky Wright is so gaaaaay! He's gettin old though you can see in his face. I bet Taylor beats him.

Well, another brilliant post as always by many
Winky's age isn't too big of a deal. He's not a power fighter, nor speed/reflexes. His boxing ability is almost purely mental and stylistic and it will allow him to box for many more years to come if he so chooses.

thanks. I know Im the best.
Jermain will give him that L on his record just watch. Jermain is mo talented, mo skilled and mo athletic that Winky. All Winky has on Jermain is defense.

Yeah that's a really good point.
I'd have to say in the event he does not continue to move up in weight. If he did so, he might face bigger punchers and have some newfound troubles.
The___Hitman 01-31-2006, 10:22 PM I met Winky Wright, shook hands, took pics, great guy...
but even though I met him, I can't have him at #1..
I believe Taylor and Hokpins will both beat him, I believe Hopkins would do better against Wright than Taylor will, also..
Winky is a great fighter, but he hasn't really done much to take the #1 and #2 spots...
My p4p list
#1. Mayweather
#2. Pacquiao
#3. Winky Wright
#4. Marco Antonio Barrera
#5. Rafael Marquez
Since Margarito cant get any fights at Welter, I would like to see him step up to Jr middle.
I would be awsome to see him fight winky.
It will be the biggest crowd for Winky, thats for sure.
I like Winky, but DAMNNNNN!!! he is so ****ing boring to watch.
People have to remember that boxing is just not a sport, its ENTERTAINMENT, and for that Winky fails miserably.

good point!!!!!!!!!!!!
2000BC 01-31-2006, 11:03 PM Taylor isn't one dimensional like Tito and that jab won't have that much effect on a guy that is bigger, stronger, fresher, younger and possible more hungry. I seriously think Taylor can hurt Winky if the fight ever comes off and Winky doesn't ask for ridiculous purses.
good point!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriouly, people forget about this HUGE aspect of the sport.
The___Hitman 02-01-2006, 12:11 AM 2000BC...
Exactly!
Winky did absolutely nothing against Trinidad but jab, it just shows how one dimensional Trindad was...
It's not like Winky will just jab Taylor all night, HELL NO!
Wright doesn't have the style to beat Taylor either..

its only for the stupid people ranked Winky at #2.
he never beat a p4p fighter .
not like Pac, he did not just beat MAB and ERIK, He KTFO of the Great Mexicans.
for me i think Winky is a solid number 5.
he is very boring like Yawn Manuel Marquez
