View Full Version : Cotto: I'm moving to 147 next year
cotto#1p4p 01-31-2006, 05:13 PM In an interview today Miguel Cotto said that he'll be moving to Welterweight after his bout with Castillo in September. My doubt is then, will he ever fight Hatton? He'll fight Branco in March, who will he fight in between that fight and the Castillo fight in September then? Arum will not schedule a Castillo fight and then put him in a more difficult fight with Hatton before it.
So.....Will Hatton move up to 147? and dosen't Cotto has a better chance against Mayweather and Hatton at 147 where he won't have to drain himself to make weight?
Update:
Cotto said he's retiring in 4 years, he wants to spend time with his family. He said he's open to fighting Hatton and Mayweather Jr. but that after 2006 he ain't going back to 140 and what was left undone in 140(Hatton?) would be the past.
jack_the_rippuh 01-31-2006, 05:15 PM It'll be alot easier for him to make weight now.
It'll also be alot easier for him to reach his natural 160lbs. by fight night.
Undefeated 01-31-2006, 05:16 PM It's what ever is best for cotto...as long as he fights castillo i will be satisfied..but also a fight with hatton would be better... but probaly at 147?? i dont kno... maybe cotto wants judah lol or kostya tszyu (if he comes back)
jack_the_rippuh 01-31-2006, 05:18 PM Assuming Margarito stays at 147lbs. we get another chance to see Puerto Rico vs. Mexico.

I think that Cotto will be more affective at 147, he will carry with him more power, and show more versatility than most 147 fighters right now. His fight with Castillo will be a great one but I think that he will have to fight someone between March and September.
Undefeated 01-31-2006, 05:19 PM Ooh yea i almost forgot about margarito....DAMN!!! margarito would kill cotto
jack_the_rippuh 01-31-2006, 05:21 PM If they fight, I would put my money on Miguelito.
Undefeated 01-31-2006, 05:26 PM Damn....margarito is a monster though.... i would also put money on cotto myself but its not going to be a easy fight for either person..maybe cotto is moving up to fight margarito.... hmm you never know
moy22487 01-31-2006, 06:00 PM quik question when was the interview. does he plan to fight 06 at 140 or is 06 the year he wants to move up in
mic573 01-31-2006, 06:00 PM Cotto's been struggling hard to make 140 so this would definitely help him. I think it will also help his chin.
Hatton/Cotto will happen once Hatton makes the move to his more natural weight class as well.
borikua 01-31-2006, 06:02 PM Arum will not schedule a Castillo fight and then put him in a more difficult fight with Hatton before it.
I think that Castillo is a tougher fight for Cotto than Hatton...
borikua 01-31-2006, 06:03 PM Any link for this interview???
Undefeated 01-31-2006, 06:15 PM I think that Castillo is a tougher fight for Cotto than Hatton...
correcto... castillo is tougher than hatton
Ooh yea i almost forgot about margarito....DAMN!!! margarito would kill cotto
I dont think so. Margarito hits hard yes, but Cotto overcomes adversity pretty well. Lets also keep in mind he punches really hard and is a better technical fighter.
The fight has the potential to lean either way. Margarito could effectively use his jab, and keep Cotto at the end of his reach delivering power shots. Or he could just get blasted with a arsenal of power punches.
I think Cotto is actually a threat to knock Margarito out.
aps214 01-31-2006, 06:33 PM Ooh yea i almost forgot about margarito....DAMN!!! margarito would kill cotto
I would give Cotto a chance against Margarito. Cotto has heart and enough skill to stay away from Margarito.. Plus Cotto is a naturally bigger man too even at 147!! This fight wouyld be too hard to call but if I had to bet Id take Cotto!!
cotto#1p4p 01-31-2006, 07:29 PM The interview was on local TV here in Puerto Rico, he said he'll fight at 140 in 2006 and then move to 147 in 2007. Fight some time at 147 and then he'll retire, I think he's said before he ain't fighting after 30.
VERSION1 (V1) 01-31-2006, 07:34 PM if be a much better fighter at 147

has any fighter actually not faught past the age that they said there going to hang up there gloves? i think he will be to much in love with being one of the best to retire after 07
Ooh yea i almost forgot about margarito....DAMN!!! margarito would kill cotto
Damn this would be a great fight, U got the Mexico vs PR thing going on. and two warriors going to battle.
Margarito will finally get to show the world what hes made of.
I see him winning by KO.

this guy is just afraid to compete with the Elites. :D

If you think that than you must be very dumb. :p
after castillo beats him..i guess he will move to 147..then get raped by judah
DUPLICITY 02-01-2006, 10:47 AM I think Cotto is just acknowledging the obvious.
The guy has been killing himself to make 140. Both he and Gatti are in the high 150s on fight nights. I'm hoping that he is a STRONGER fighter at full welter. Perhaps that vulnerability in his chin is a result of weakening himself to make weight.
We will soon find out. Either way, it's time for his people to remove that protective foam wrapper from Miguel.
borikua 02-01-2006, 12:15 PM Oh ****, foreal, how much? Am I being punked :D
Ya man fo real...It's not all his fights, but his best ones...
borikua 02-01-2006, 12:18 PM haha Wheres that Angel pic of cotto you put up once before ? :D
....... Mofoker!!! :D
Miguel "El killer" or "titanium" would had been a lot fukin better.. :(
norbak1258 02-01-2006, 12:21 PM the move to 147 would be great for cotto in my opinion. that is where he should be.
aps214 02-01-2006, 12:21 PM Whatever happens with Cotto I respect the man. I dont see him crying and making excuses if he loses !
machotime 02-01-2006, 12:25 PM after castillo beats him..i guess he will move to 147..then get raped by judah
If you think that Judah can beat Cotto, you really don't know boxing, compare the styles and Judah's chin, and make a unbiased analysis of a fight between the two.....there is no way Judah would win. :D
man shut up...judah can beat cotto..neither 1 of them have a chin
machotime 02-01-2006, 03:00 PM man shut up...judah can beat cotto..neither 1 of them have a chin
Cotto has more of a chin and has way more talent than that Loser. Think about this fight analytically and not biased.
shemmue 02-01-2006, 07:49 PM cotto has big potential matchups at both 140 lbs. and 147 lbs. i also think he can beat alot of the top guys in both divisions castillo, hatton, zab, margarito are all guys that cotto can beat.
morancito 02-01-2006, 08:18 PM Castillo will beat Cotto, but Miguel would have a field day with Zab.
willnav 02-01-2006, 11:20 PM Here is the article but in spanish:
http://primerahora.com/noticia.asp?guid=D2C20CA4DBBA4CE396B8DC685508744F
"El año pasado fue fuerte. La división de las 140 libras se ha ido aclarando a medida que pasan los meses y éste es el año de quedarnos con la división, de acaparar para el próximo año subir a las 147 libras", continuó diciendo Cotto.

I remember that from a loooong time ago(well not that long) but earlier in his career cotto said he would retire by like age 29 or something.Of course it was just dismissed as talk.
psychopath 02-01-2006, 11:44 PM Well good luck to him. :) I bet he'll be more competitive at 147 because he won't be punishing himself making 140.
Undefeated 02-01-2006, 11:45 PM Im sorry but cotto vs judah..... that fight i would have to give to cotto by tko in the 7th.... but i hope he fights some good fights...
oscar de la hoya said he would retire at 30..and so did ray leonard..
