i know that its the prevailing thought that powerlifting isnt a good idea for boxers, but would it hurt to lift low weights for high reps like twice a week?

today i did 4 sets of bench press with two 20 pound dumbells, fifteen reps each time. any of you guys in the know think this is a good/bad idea?

Nothing wrong with it, but I don't see why you'd even bother with 20lbs.

well when i used to lift for power, my peak set was 145 4 times, so i cant lift that much. i figured 40 with dumbells at high reps would be good for conditioning.

If you're just going to do that you shouldn't lift weights at all. Low weights/high reps isn't going to make you stronger. I can't believe weights still have such a bad reputation. Weight training has made me quicker, stronger and faster than before I started weight training.

see, im not sure whether i wanna dismiss the idea as old school bull****, or adhere to it as something that's made boxer's good for years.

the example i use is shane mosley, who can bench 450 but doesnt hit hard.

being able to punch hard is something that comes natural. For explosive power you want to do heavy weights low reps. Benching 85 for 4 sets of 15 isnt gunna really make you stronger.

if u want endurance hit the bag for 20 minutes.the purpose of weights is to make you stronger and explosive not endurance. research complex training. sports science has come a long way, so yes dismiss the old school thought that weights makes u big n slow. look at a 100m sprinter, built for SPEED yet packed with muscle. keep a smart diet and you can gain strenght without gaining weight.

mosley doesnt hit hard cos of technique more than nething. ive seen him throw the rite with his back foot in the air! tecnique b4 strenght!!
