View Full Version : Martin Luther King Jr. Day! BoxingPrincess 01-17-2005, 09:11 AM what a great man :) and no school! :D leff 01-17-2005, 10:10 AM Well he is certainly better than the other martin luther. LOve SonnyG8R 01-17-2005, 11:45 AM Well he is certainly better than the other martin luther. LOve Not necessarily. Challenging the Catholic Church to abandon its corrupt ways was a pretty big accomplishment and very brave back in the 1500's. The guy singlehandedly began the Protestant Reformation. But I guess you think that papal abuses and the sale of indulgences by church officials was ok, and fighting for the gospel and the doctrine of justification by faith is a bad thing. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, but there were a lot of great civil rights leaders that are forgotten. Here in NH we used to celebrate Civil Rights day. I thought that was much more inclusive and appropriate. I mean we don't even celebrate Washington or Lincoln's birthday anymore. We have the inclusive "presidents day" but we set aside a day just for martin luther King Jr. PBDS 01-17-2005, 12:24 PM what a great man :) and no school! :D ...Hey Alli, you realize he wasn't a boxer right?? :) leff 01-17-2005, 12:26 PM Martin luther split the church in two because he thought it was wrong to do something good like giving money to the church (who were the only organization who helped the poor and ill by that time) when people had sinned like stealin, lying, raping etc. He was a munk with 5 kids  Nuff said. Nevermind that he was one of the most brilliant men of the 20th century. Nevermind that he treated people of all races with absolute respect (everyone who met him will testify to this). Nevermind that he was starting to renounce violence and be more open to other races than the Nation of Islam ideology dictated at the time. No offence to Martin Luther King, of course. But I do see your point. BTW, about Martin Luther: history, which in the English west has been overly kind to the Prostetants, ignores the fact the the Protestants were just as intolerant as the Catholics. They basically invented a new branch of Christianity and started killing people who wouldn't go along with them. They were by no means open and tolerant. Chups 01-17-2005, 12:30 PM It's not a holiday for me...I'm here at work.  BoxingPrincess 01-17-2005, 12:51 PM Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, but there were a lot of great civil rights leaders that are forgotten. They burnt what they thought were heretics just as the catholics did. Besides the only reason Henry the 8th brok with the mother church was because the pope wouldnt let him marry for what?? the 5th time? ore so. And the only reason the scandinavian countries broke with the mother church was that the English wouldent trade with them unless. So it was only half of germany (the north) who became protestants because of Luthers opinions. Bombardier 01-17-2005, 03:27 PM And the only reason the scandinavian countries broke with the mother church was that the English wouldent trade with them unless. That's interesting. I didn't know that. Thing is the Reformation should be seen by people as a tragedy, not some triumphant revolutionary event. It was the equivalent of a civil war in the church, and just another way modern civilization has shot itself in the foot. leff 01-17-2005, 04:38 PM That's interesting. I didn't know that. It was the equivalent of a civil war in the church, and just another way modern civilization has shot itself in the foot. True its sad realy. SonnyG8R 01-17-2005, 06:37 PM Well you don't hear a lot of stories about Lutheran Pastors molesting young boys. There aren't billions of dollars in pedophile law suits against protestant churches. So i guess they've got that going for them. :p leff 01-17-2005, 07:18 PM Well you don't hear a lot of stories about Lutheran Pastors molesting young boys. There aren't billions of dollars in pedophile law suits against protestant churches. So i guess they've got that going for them. :p I admitt that the few cases of pedophile in church is terrible but. Its like 1.283 million catholics in this world. Thats means a lot of priests and if you think about it there is actual very few pedophiles compared to that. Its easier for the protestants because they brake with cristian rules for priest and have sex. Frankly per definition there is no such thing as protestant priest i guess that is why there is no pedo protestant priests. SonnyG8R 01-17-2005, 07:46 PM That vow of celibacy is a killer. They need to get rid of that. leff 01-17-2005, 08:07 PM That vow of celibacy is a killer. They need to get rid of that. Priests are married to the church and done with that, bsides no catholic priest would have time enough to family. Its a bit sad but still its the way it has to be. Atwa_66 01-17-2005, 08:42 PM ...Hey Alli, you realize he wasn't a boxer right?? :) Chris Byrd isn't a boxer neither, and she loves him ;) abdiel2k3 01-17-2005, 08:48 PM im here in glendale Az and apaperently riots have broken out in downtown pheonix mlk parade thats just plain sad PBDS 01-17-2005, 09:12 PM Chris Byrd isn't a boxer neither, and she loves him ;) ...Now that **** is funny!!! She is gonna beat your ass for that one when she meets you. :) hahaha yeah she probably will :) LuKahnLi 01-18-2005, 11:20 AM I am watching the Condi Rice confirmation hearing on CNN. One of the dudes on the panel, Senator Nelson asked her. "Did your parents know Martin Luther King?" She said yes. He said "He's one of my personal heroes." What a dork. LuKahnLi 01-18-2005, 11:26 AM Not saying he is a dork because MLK is his hero. But because that is like a "duh". Its kinda like saying "Jesus is my hero." |
