Kind of suprising to me seeing old ass Royce back after so long. I guess K1 ran out of freaks for him to beat. The bout is no gi but not under Royce's mile long special rules list as far as i know. Will Royce survive three rounds or will Hughes murder him inside of the distance? Im tempted to go with the latter. Especially after Tokoro managed to get a draw with Royce at the K1 NYE show

IMO the only thing hughes has on royce is weight.. But so has everyone else royce has fought...
Matt is a good wrestler but when it goes to the groundgracie will be going for subs like crazy..
I give this to royce, though the UFC must have a trick up it's sleeve.. It would never sacrafice an AMERICAN fighter to a foreigner..

Guess thats why hughes won't be fighting GSP as soon as we thought lol...

I still don't see how that is worth all the hype..
with no special rules how much are they paying royce??

Did anybody else fall asleep after leben and rivera??

What? Royce generally fights at 190 lbs. The fight has been set at 175 lbs. 'cause Royce can't make 170.

Apparently, it is gonna be at 170. I don't think Royce ever fought at 190. It's mostly around the 175-180 pound range, I think. He's got a mad height and reach advantage on Hughes too, although I don't think that'll make too much of a difference. Hughes by TKO, round 1.

First of all, It will be good to see the Legendary Royce Gracie back in action. Second, I cannot stand Matt Hughes, he's a cocky SOB, and he has already disrespected Royce. I hope Royce breaks his arm. Gracie built the UFC, his style was awesome to watch. In a violent sport he won without violence, and that was what made him special. Seeing him submit a 250 man was a thing of beauty. Im thinking Matt is way over confident. To see Royce submit him will be a delight.

Anyone notice how royce looked like a giant compared to rogan and hughes hahah.

Anyway I think hughes is a phenomonal ahtelete and fighter but I want ROYCE to WIN this one! so he can shut up all those haters who kept posting hughes will murder royce threads at sherdog.

I bet if royce wins they will say it was a fluke he got lucky.

Is there something I'm not getting here, isn't Gracie way past his prime? Hughes just looks indestructible at the present, only GSP has a chance against him IMO.

For those who thinks Gracie will beat the country boy, please care to elaborate.

hmmm, past his prime, meaning.... supposedly incapable of keeping in shape & learning new tricks?? I think it's very possible that Hughes might find himself learning a few "old" tricks from the legend himself. Besides, we all know "anything can happen" in MMA. Sometimes, all it takes for 1 fighter to win, is to take advantage of an opponents mistake.

Yup!I agree

Thats the beauty of combat sports!

boxing and mma the sweet science!

I dislike it when people say mma and boxing are violent! I dont consider it violence to me Violence is picking on someone defensless and hurting people for fun, like rape, and randomly beating up people and hurting them.

mma and boxing both men come to fight as sport and no one is forcing them.

I just feel fighters have more honor then other athletes these guys are brave and they get paid peanuts I respect them.More football players have been violent to innocent people off the field then fighters.

anyway I still think this will be awesome!

also It will be in Los angeles yes! staples center I hope it sells out.

I'd like to see Royce pull it off, really I would, but I don't think that'll happen. Hughes has the advantage in the standup, I think this fight is gonna be decided on the feet honestly. I dont think Hughes will be able to pass Royce's guard on the ground, and I dont see Royce getting the takedown or top postion on Hughes. I'm gonna say Hughes by UD....

Royce Gracie is as big as it gets in the UFC IMO.

Yeah, Royce would need to win by sub or stoppage for him to beat Hughes. Any decision will go to Hughes. I do see that Royce can get the top position by an aggressive Hughes but how long can Royce keep it? I dont know. The other scenario would be Hughes laying on top of Royce like Ken Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie 2.

kaps
01-18-2006, 03:23 AM
Yeah, Hughes GnP is better than Shamrocks, but it's hard to mount some good GnP from guard, well, the type that'll stop a fight anyway. I honestly think Hughes will get frustrated with Royce's guard and try to keep it standing thru the rest of the fight being that Royce's stand up is so so, Hughes has a shot at a TKO or a KO....

i dunno if any one seen Royce s fight at K-1 NYE it ended up as a draw cause of the contract if there was a decision Tokoro would have won pretty easly, did Royce and Matt sign the contract or it was just announced?! i don't really believe in this... anyway Matt will win

When does GSP get his shot?? Can't stand the way UFC does business.. If matt looses then what?? does gsp or penn still get their shot??

I still don't uderstand how this is a big deal??
Maybe it's the fact they got royce for CHEAP and NO special rules lol..

Does anybody know how old Gracie is? I feel like they are dragging him out of retirement just to feed him to Hughes adn give him a chance to cash-out on what he gave to the sport 10 years ago.

In another 5 years, is every heavyweight boxer going to start calling out Lenox Lewis?

Could be an interesting match-up. Gracie ist still a master on the ground and if it goes to the ground we'll see what Hughs is really capable of.

The Royce Gracie (http://www.k-1sport.de/en/database/show_fighter.php?id=229) vs. Hideo Tokoro (http://www.k-1sport.de/en/database/show_fighter.php?id=279) fight was a draw because the special rules said in case of a decision it will be a draw. The first round was pretty even but the second was all Royce...

Royce is old and not as strong as he was once but if Matt isnt able to handle him in a convincing manner he could lose image.

Hughes does look great but he just keep fighting the same guys over and over. He almost lost to sorry Frank Trigg who has limited ground skills. Royce perfected the ground game Hughes is going to have to come with something better than the rear naked choke to take out Royce. Submission fighting and wrestling this should make for a good fight.

I've been thinking alot about this fight and the possabilities. My first reaction was "No Royce! what are you thinking!? HUGHES BY BRUTAL beatdown! :( "

Then i thought some more. Royce will probably be 185 come fight time. He is not allowed to wear The Gi. Poor Royce... Then i thought even more...

Remember when Hughes Fought Charuto and how he has the harest times with submission specialists... All it takes is one lucky break to catch someone in a sub - especially someone who may be feelinga little cocky and overconfident.

The way i see it, this fight really can go either way the more i think about the possabilities.

I feel that Hughes may take it, unfortunately, but i'd love to see Royce slap a nice tight triangle on Hughes and make him tap for the world to see.

LHWchamp5
01-20-2006, 07:41 AM
Its strange how royce isn't wearing the gi, he's not even allowed to wear gi pants..
Let's dwell on this shall we..

A gi is white.. Hughes worked on a farm.. Only white animals are sheep.. Matt used to abuse the sheep..
I got it!!!
they won't let royce wear the gi because they don't want him to confuse matt into thinking that he is really a sheep..
Imagine matt mistaking royce for a sheep and brutally raping him in the octagon.. That's a good way to kill your most dominant champ...

there you have it, the reason royce can't wear the gi is to prevent matt from thinking about his sheep...

Royce by triangle to armbar, into a kimura reversed into a RNC all B4 matt realizes that he's not on his farm, and he's not wrestling with his sheep.

I have mixed feelings about this one.

I have been trying to find some info, on the legality of Royce wearing his GI. Does anyone know if he will be allowed to use this WEAPON? In my eyes it is a tool, or a weapon, and will give him a very unfair advantage. It will be interesting to see! When have you seen since the UFC as been regulated, a fighter wearing a GI? Like it or not, it is A weapon, and a tool. Can Matt grab his own skin to cinch down a triangle or choke hold, and/or reinforce his grip? Or move around in his own skin to slip out of a hold? To this day, I have NEVER seen Royce fight without it, have you?

My pick would be Matt, but if Royce uses his GI, Royce is my pick......
