Morales-Pacquiao Presser!
By Karl Freitag
In front of the biggest press turnout Top Rank has ever had in Los Angeles, superstars Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao met for the first time today prior to their March 19 superfight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Morales said, "I had three great fights last year. It didn't finialize the way I had hoped it to, but I'm very satisfied with my performances. I didn't want to take anyone easy coming back. I think this will be a great, explosive fight." Pacquiao promised Morales, "I'm going to give you a real good fight." Pacquiao's promoter Murad Muhammad stirred things up a bit when he stated that Pacquiao destroyed a legend in Barrera, knocked down Marquez three times and now "he's going after the top Mexican." Promoter Bob Arum later told *********.com, "This smells like it's going to do tremendous business because Morales Barrera did big, but it was two Mexicans. I think a Filipino and a Mexican brings another element to it, because energizes over two million Filipinos in Southern California." Ticket prices are $75-$400 and seats go on sale Friday at noon. Only the main event was announced. (More to come)

BoxingAnalyst 01-12-2005, 10:11 PM I WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY THAT MANNY "PACMAN THE DESTROYER" PACQUIAO IS GOING TO BE AN AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD NAME. HELLO. YOU GUYS THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY- AND I AM, NAHH JUST KIDDING. :D

yeah might be an exaggated figure from the writer himself. i did the math based on his figure...mine was even a very conservative estimate.

Hurlex 01-12-2005, 10:33 PM you guys are talking as if he won already...its MORALES PEOPLE!!! go knows i hate him but he good and pac's style is perfect for him..so pac gotta be on his best that night...he seems overconfident...he shouldnt under-estimate morales's power and ability especially when he cant box and is easy to hit.
And we know pac not that hard to ko-bit of course very dangerous
i dun think pac needs a rematch with marquez, to indicate that hes the better figher
pac vs morales tho.... i like both fighters and i hope we get fight of the year... and may the best man win

nah..i'm sure it's just u...we're fiesta people too, yah know... :D
ELPacman 01-12-2005, 10:45 PM Actually I think Morales's style fit's Manny's more. Everyone's style Manny faced before Marquez was more of Morale's style and look where they ended up. Even Marquez's style which was the only real antidote for Manny's got him nearly KOed in first and surviving for his life the rest of the way. 2nd off Manny isn't easy to KO. He's taken some hard hits in his past fights and withstood them. His KO losses were from Flyweight doing some crazy dehydration so he wouldn't be stripped of belt and he could still defend it. Of course dehydrating himself to death only proved he couldn't continue any longer at that weight since his body couldn't stay there anymore. 3rd, I know he hasn't won yet and it's boxing, anything can happen, though please, don't kill the excitement :) Manny is what Ali is to others.
Chups 01-12-2005, 10:46 PM This is going to be great....looks like its finalized!

In their first meeting to date, Filipino Manny Pacquiao and Mexican Erik Morales did not disappoint as they drew the biggest media turnout Top Rank has ever had in Los Angeles during the press conference yesterday to officially announce their March 19 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, wearing a rosary hung around his neck over a white-and-blue sweatshirt and his ultra-expensive wristwatch, lived up to Filipino expectations of not playing coy and second fiddle against the vastly-popular Morales, saying, "I'm going to give you a real good fight."
Morales, dapper in black jacket worn over a white polo shirt, also declared, "I had three great fights last year. It didn't finialize the way I had hoped it to, but I'm very satisfied with my performances. I didn't want to take anyone easy coming back. I think this will be a great, explosive fight."
As usual, Pacquiao's bombastic promoter Murad Muhammad reportedly heated things up a bit under wintry conditions in Los Angeles when he stated that Pacquiao annihilated a legend in Barrera, sent down Marquez three times and now "he's going after the top Mexican."
Promoter Bob Arum later told *********, "This smells like it's going to do tremendous business because Morales Barrera did big, but it was two Mexicans. I think a Filipino and a Mexican brings another element to it, because it energizes over two million Filipinos in Southern California."
Tickets for the bout are priced from $75 to $400 and seats go on sale Friday at noon. Only the main event was announced during the presscon held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Meanwhile, in a virtual rout, reigning Ring Magazine featherweight king Manny Pacquiao has been hailed by the Games and Amusements Board as the country's 2004 Boxer of the Year following his successful campaign for the year 2004.
GAB Boxing Division chief Emmanuel "Noli" Flores, in an interview with this writer, informed that Pacquiao won hands down, thus clinching his third GAB Award.
Newly-installed GAB chairman Eric Buhain, together with Commissioners Angel Bautista and Alex Paglumutan, is expected to award Pacquiao with the official citation probably soon after the Filipino ring icon comes back from his scheduled showdown with Mexican legend Erik Morales.

fist-of-fury 01-12-2005, 11:14 PM Erik should be commended for accepting this fight. :) Usually, a big fighter coming off a big loss will play it safe and pick a smaller fry on his come back. Good for wounded ego and for regaining lost confidence.
But, my oh my, he has to pick the Pacman himself! I feel sorry for him already! But I give him an "A" for bravery!! :p
mr. bojangles 01-12-2005, 11:14 PM Any Pinoy prospects underneath this fight? Is Z Gorres in? Rodel Mayol (vs. Ivan Calderon), Randy Suico (vs. a top superfeatherweight)?

I noticed the exact same thing. He's only a couple of inches taller. I would have thought he'd be towering over Pac. Ohhh man, I'm never gonna be able to wait till March. Well here's one ppv I'm definatley buying.

Erik is just 2 inches taller than Manny. Pac has beaten a lot of guys much taller than him before :D

Some fan's (maxboxing admin) observation in the presscon today:
I was fortunate enough to be invited to go to the presser for the upcoming Manny Pacquiao vs Erik Morales fight and I thought I would share a few thoughts with you as I sat there an observed my surroundings
1) Martin "El Gallito" Castillo was in attendance and I asked him if he had an opponent picked for his next title defense. As of yet they had not determined who they wanted to fight
2) Manny lights up a room when he enters. The fans, the press, even the hotel staff all seemed to notch the energy levels up a bit as soon as he entered.
3) Manny was all smiles and handshakes. You could tell he was loving the attention and the spotlight he has been given. He had a genuine enthusiasm that IMO is sorely missed in boxing
4) Manny is small. My 1st impression seems right that it will be Manny's speed vs Erik's size.
5) Manny is fit. Maybe 135-137 tops. Partying and what not seem to have little affect on him as he looked like he could step in right now and fight
6) Erik was all business. He rarely smiled but was respectful of Manny.
7) Erik is a big small guy. Broad shoulders. He looked in good shape as well although I would tend to think he is heavier right now than Manny.
Erik said he expects a war and that if a knockout happens so be it.
9) JMM's co manager (also Erik's Mexico Manager) said they have no idea now who JMM will face
m00ks 01-12-2005, 11:27 PM Erik is just 2 inches taller than Manny. Pac has beaten a lot of guys much taller than him before :D
hey thrilla
ya man, I know that he has problems with shorter opponents, but he hits tall guys a lot better. More of a target.

Yeah I tend to agree with you. That's why I think he's coming into this fight focused on trying to destroy Manny and get back in the ring with MAB for the 4th time. He wants to use this fight as a stepping stone to Barrera. That's the reason why this will be a fight where I think there will be just one man standing before we reach the 12th round

Hella tough fight he took. He must plan to train his ass off. Still think he made a mistake, same as MAB.

Well, the guy is planning to move up in weight, and if he does so coming from the MAB loss I think he wouldn't bring much with him in terms of marketability and asking price. With a Pac win he could go either way, move up in weight or get a rematch with MAB with a high asking price :) Good business sense aint it?
But being the warrior that he is I'd have to salute him for his courage to take on Pac after MAB ;)

m00ks 01-13-2005, 12:07 AM Just saw the press conference. Manny looked like he was excited to be there. Morales was calm and collected. Manny said him and Roach had a special plan of attack for Morales but said that was a secret. The most interesting comments was made by Freddie Roach. When asked if how the fight woudl end, he said instantly without hesitation as he looks down away form the camera, grinning, "He's (Manny) gonna knock him out...late".

It won't. Roach and MAnny plans to back him up and fight with a much faster pace as he did Barrera. He said Manny will wear Morales out.

It won't happen...Morales is too strong in the closing rounds.
ELPacman 01-13-2005, 12:18 AM That's crazy seeing Morales standing next to Manny. It brings a tear to my eye :) This is seriously what we can call, a dream match being turned into reality. Murad Muhammad might of screwed up royally last year though I guess in the end it was all worth it because now he ended up jumping at the gun with Marquez playing hard to get. The other reason I say it's crazy seeing Morales standing next to Manny because it seems like just yesterday I saw Morales fight Barrera III in that crazy war. Morales is seriously a fighter. After 1 great fight, he's going right into another without catching his breathe.
Pacquiao "No Fear" will finally take on Morales. This will be a great fight. I'm rooting for Pacquiao 100%..
THRILLAinmanila 01-13-2005, 12:20 AM It won't happen...Morales is too strong in the closing rounds.
Erik indeed gets stronger as the fight wears on. Manny's best chance is to finish him before the 5th round..

Morales starts somewhat slow but usually builds up and stays at a very high pace after the first few rounds. Both he and Pacquiao have great stamina so we are likely to see classic championship rounds as the fight comes to a close. I think Manny will have to get him with several good shots in a row to take him down and eventually out. If Pac builds a large enough lead early it could be troublesome for Morales to have to mix it up later on.

Its anybody's ballgame. I guess the one who is able to establish himself early on and do the early damage will have the edge on this one......

That's when he controls the pace and given those few first rounds of low output. When you're 2 inches taller, your ribs are just asking to get hit, and we all know how body shots wear your ass down.

Barerra is the best body puncher of all the little guys and Morales ate every one he threw at him. Morales took every body shot and was (IMO) stronger than Barerra in the 11th and 12th.

i think Morales wants to use his frustration and rage from losing MAB - EM III on Manny. if this fight actually happens, it'll be a war!

very true, he was stronger than Barrera late but his inability to cope with the early pressure given by MAB is what cost him the fight. He gave a lot of rounds away by conceding to Barrera's superior speed. Mind you I can see Manny working faster than Barrera was cuz he naturally is.
mr. bojangles 01-13-2005, 12:37 AM Next question is, will Morales box this time? Will he use his jab more keeping Pac at a safe distance and take potshots at him with his right hand?
Or will he brawl again, as usual?
Honestly, I hope he'll be drawn into a brawl, 'cuz that's when Pac will have his best chance to unload his powershots.

I agree with you here...Pac does have a pretty scary, uptempo fighting rate. Hopefully Morales opts to use his range and boxing ability to throw Pac off early. Morales will have to hit Pacquiao with punches from different angles. I also think his uppercut will be a useful punch later on when Pac has slowed down. Maybe he can catch him on the way in. First time Pac hits Morales, Morales is gonna be thinking, "god damn this little ****ers 1-2 is quick".
Tha Greatest 01-13-2005, 12:42 AM Murad acts like pacman killed marquez n i disagreed
but now that i think of it, marquez not wanting to fight him,
Pacman KO'd marquez in 13!
I hope pacquiao beats tha livin **** out of morales and i hope barrera beats pacquiao
If barrera doesnt fight pacqiao i will be really disappointed in him and he would not be my favorite fighter nemore if he ducks pacquiao, THEY GAVE HIM A CHANCE!
Same with Marquez but Marquez officially chickened out, Marquez could've beat him if they had a rematch
THRILLAinmanila 01-13-2005, 12:49 AM I agree with you here...Pac does have a pretty scary, uptempo fighting rate.
LOL. Just like my answer to jose's post on the other thread re: the "little asian" being brought to school by the mexican..well..if the boxing gods are with Pac come fight night we will see the little asian make a taco salad out of the Mexican... :p

I just need to stop talking about this fight because I'm afraid I'll have a heart attack from thinking about it too much.
Now all I need is Tito/Nard, Toney/Vitali, Cotto/Tszyu, and Lacy/any good opponent and I'll be set for the year.
THRILLAinmanila 01-13-2005, 12:52 AM Not much man...just hyped up about this fight. This seems to be an instant classic even before it begins. I hope that Morales wins but it's definitely going to go down to the wire either way. Anyway...I got full support for my boy Morales. Anyone want to put down a gentlemans bet on the fight?
I agree with you buddy. You can go visit a thread I started in the Fantasy Betting section entitled "Pacquiao-Morales" bet. No holds barred gentleman's betting going on there :D

If Morales would stick to the outside, he's have such an easier time. Pop the jab then let those uppercuts loose when the kid's coming in. But I think Pac's gonna catch him with one, get him pissed and then sweet science will be thrown out the window. I LOVE BOXING LOL!!!1
miron_lang 01-13-2005, 12:59 AM Murad acts like pacman killed marquez n i disagreed
but now that i think of it, marquez not wanting to fight him,
Pacman KO'd marquez in 13!
I hope pacquiao beats tha livin **** out of morales and i hope barrera beats pacquiao

Good Post! I AGREE! :)
evosbm 01-13-2005, 12:59 AM I know Erik wants to fight Manny just to prove he's better than Barrera. He took this fight out of pride...whatcha think thrilla, does he know what he's getting himself into?
it could be but am sure he himself knows that he's betting on a 50/50 chances. if nobody goes down the canvas and the decision goes to score cards, EM has a big chance of winning. i think that is EM's goal.
evosbm 01-13-2005, 01:25 AM Next question is, will Morales box this time? Will he use his jab more keeping Pac at a safe distance and take potshots at him with his right hand?
Or will he brawl again, as usual?
Honestly, I hope he'll be drawn into a brawl, 'cuz that's when Pac will have his best chance to unload his powershots.
well EM is also capable of boxing his way to win the fight. he did that to Carlos Hernandez and MAB3 (in some rounds). it's very possible that he'd do that to Pacman too. i think EM's gonna use a lot more of left jabs and right uppercuts. EM's style is gonna be showing more like what he showed against Hernandez. the problem with hernandez is he was so open that EM countered him and connect more while Hernandez was just so inaccurately throwing his punches. but what's gonna be EM's problem against Pac is he'll never know whether Pac's gonna throw a left straight or left uppercut (new weapon). plus Pac's quickness will get him inside EM and hit those ribs like crazy. Pac's gonna be fighting in and out. he'll swarm EM. ;)

yah man. Still having trouble to believing it. Back when we we talked about it, it was nothing more than a dream fight specially with the Marquez draw. Ohhh man I'm so excited. Yes Manny will be the underdog but that comforts me cuz that's when he fights his best, when no one is giving him much of a chance and when the odds are like you said are well stacked up against him. It fuels his hunger.

This is a very good fight. A macho guy like Erik is godsend for Pacquiao. Although money is a big issue, Pacman wants to beat the best to show that he is the greatest out there. So its not only money for Pacman which is identical to Erik. This is indeed an exciting match up.
This is also the first time Pacquiao is stepping into the realm of Flash Elorde. FE ruled the 130 lb weight for 7 years during his time.
ELPacman 01-13-2005, 12:29 PM The way I see the fight going is Manny will be backing up Morales the whole night, the pace he's going to set from the opening bell will be something Morales never dealed with before. Instead of getting stronger as he usually does in late rounds(cause of slow pace), he's going to be spent from the early fast pacing Manny is going to set on him. Manny in conditioning he was for Barrera which I believe he will be for this one as well with the time he's getting now, Morales will simply not be able to keep up. I predict either early 1 punch KO or late stoppage. I don't see Morales keeping up with the pace, hand speed, or power of Manny. Though anything can happen and Morales is one rugged war torn bastard :)
