TOUGHMAN CONTEST Hello everyone, I need some help. I am going to enter a toughman contest and have 20 days to prepare. This is not a joke. I have no boxing experience but have been known to be able to take a punch (tough chin). I figured I can take a beating for 3 minutes if worst comes to worst, plus it is just for fun. I was wondering what everyone thought I should try to focus on for the next 20 days. what to do for cardio? should I buy some gloves and get used to throwing puches with the added weight? all advice is welcome.
-thanks

They are only 3 rounds, one minute each i think. I wouldn't worry about body punches to much, they usually wear a fighter down in the later rounds. These contests don't show to much skill, pretty much a slugfest with headhunters. You better hit the speed bad and shadow box, to train yourself to keep your hands up. Learn to move your head, and work the heavy bag EVERYDAY. Explode on the bad with combos from all angles. Your gonna need to get some speed and power to knock these guys out using 16 oz gloves and headgear.

DUDE, work on some head movement. Those guys are only goin to try and knock ur head off. Practice throwing straight punches. Im sure those guys r only gonna throw wild ass hooks, so the straight will get to em first.

And try to land shots on the V. the spot between the chest and the stomach, im sure it will knock the wind right out of them.

Good luck, keep them hands up.

Do as much cardio as you can, remember that if you win, you'll be fighting again and again the same night, spar and hit the bags as much as you can, have fun at it. Good luck.

Thank you for all of the great advice and tips everyone. I have been working the heavy bag everyday and been running everynight. So far while I am working the bag I have been pacing myself, should I be going hard for a minute and then take a break and then hard for another minute?

go hard on the bag for 2 minutes then a break for 30 sec for 3 rounds. HARD!!!!!

I say with 20 days left, forget the bag and buy two pairs of gloves and just fight with your boys.

That'll be a sure fire way to get your wind up.

Dude, please do not enter that crap. I entered one once and it was such a let down. Remember that they are driven by profits above any promises they make to you. In the contest I fought in, I'd knocked two guys out that night, and it was going to be me and another guy in the main event, BUT, he bowed out, so, instead of honoring their promise not to make me fight anyone outside of my experince level, they sent in the heavyweight state champ in against me. He hadn't fought that night, or the night before, he just got to walk in there fresh as a daisy to take me on. Obviously he was way out of my league, so I was forced to bow out, lose the 50 bucks it takes to enter, and lose the chance to go onto the nationals, not to mention I'd trained for 5 months specifically for fighting at this event. Every single person running the event was a moron.Toughman blows cock furiously.

Well that sucks, these fights shold be regulated by a commission to keep things on the level! People can get seriously hurt here.

Well after calling the event number, I have found out that it is not actually a toughman contest but a contest put on by a company called BRAWL. There is no entry fee so I cant lose any money. There are 3 different weight classes and the event is sanctioned by the states boxing authority. The offical that I spoke with said the contest was purely for the unexperienced, no pros or seasoned amateurs. He even explained that they use a database where they enter the name of the fighter and if anything comes up with a previous fight then that fighter is DQ.

Same thing here dude, everything was supposed to be on the up and up, but it wasn't, not in the least. The bottom line is, they get you to take a beating, and they make money off of it. At the time, I just wanted to use the event as kind of a feeling out test to see how it feels to fight in front of people, but now I realize how silly of an idea it actually is. You do the work and they get the money, not a good deal at all. Btw, if they have the weigh in at a bar or something of the sort, DROP OUT OF THE EVENT, it's a sure sign you're going to be had, cause it happened to me lol

Dude, if you want to win, the plan is simple, same way I did when I fought in toughman. Be on the defensive for the first round cause I promise you they won't be able to throw a punch in the second round. They throw everything they've got in the first 30 seconds, and then they are easy pickens. Now, most of these boys can slap some leather, but if you can stay out of the way and keep your jab out there for about a minute, you can throw anything you'd like and they'll just stand there huff'n, laying up on the ropes like good little punching bags.

I'd been fighting for 10 years, only boxing for about a year and a half. But everyone except the guy I had to bail out against had never even fought before, they usually just pull drunk ****s out from the crowd, it's very low quality entertainment
