Each day for training or just to get fit.

i'd like to know how much the minimum respectable distance is for a beginner

I don't box, but I run 8-12km 5 times a week and am a respectable runner.

I don't think anybody boxing needs to do that much though, a beginner should probably concentrate on running as far as you can in 15-20 mins (without complete exhaustion. Dovetail this in with your boxing training as well - you don't need to run every day.

Good luck!

When I boxed at a competive level, I used to run around 10kms 4/5 times a week, and I tried to run it at around 30mins (fairly quick), I also used to change it and ran sometimes with 10 kilo's on my back or did interval training (slow jog for around 5 mins then work up to a sprint then repeat)

There is no set routines, do what is comfortable at first then build up and set yourself goals and make sure you beat them to show progression!

10 kms in 30 mins.....bloody hell that is quick!

World Record = 26 minutes.

You should have got into distance running, not as fun as boxing I'd imagine though.

And that was only fairly quick? Damn! The fastest I've run 10 kms is in about 45 minutes and after that my legs felt almost as wobbly as zab doing the chicken dance.

I usually do about 6/7 kms four or five times a week.

I run miles cause Kilo's is for pussies.

I run 30 miles a week, but I break it up sometimes 5 days, sometimes 7, sometimes only 3.

you mean miles are tough but kilo's are for pussies..lol What kind of logic is that? you run to what you run. when you run miles you run metres and kilometres. It's only a conversion! You were joking right?

As I said I was very quick and fit those days, I used to be able to run 1.5 miles (army test) in and around 7 mins, my best time being 6 mins 51 secs.

In 1993 I completed a Marathon in 2 hrs 39 mins 25 secs, which would have gotten me in many top 50's in many of the worlds marathons!

Like I said that was then! Now I would be lucky if I was under 3 and a half hours (and it would kill me)

10km i 30 is just insane, what weight were you at back than?

I was probably around 180 lbs then (I'm 6'2,) I had boxed since I was 11 and had competed in sports all my life, then I joined the Army at 16 so to be honest I was naturally very fit and strong, as I grew older I did more weight training and ended up as a Heavyweight (210-220 lbs) but I was still extremely fast and fit especially for a Heavyweight.

I remember my coach in the army used to take us to a steep hill he called the 'escalator' it was about 2 miles from bottom to top through woods and went in a loop, he used to start us all staggered and send us off in weight order(10 weights) with 15 second intervals, I was obviously last to go but almost always caught the bantamweight before we reached the top after overtaking all my team mates.

Its with regret that I have to say that those days are long gone (mid 30's)!

Although as well as still coaching I train 4/5 times a week and can still run quite well!

Nice to know mate, that really is a great marathon time. I think I might go and up my target for my next 10k now, feel inspired.

Mind you, my mates in the army say that when they're dossing in Germany - most the time it seems! - there's only really phys work they can do, a chance to really get fit. Maybe I should sign up...

Yeah, your mates are right!

I was posted in Dortmund between 89 and 93 and arrived as a 17 year old, I 'grew up' very quickly!
