View Full Version : Boxing advice...
veldrak 01-07-2006, 09:16 AM Hey, I really wanna take up boxing and was wondering what the best thing for me to do is.
I'm 15, About 5'7 I'd say, weighing about 60-64kgs, which is about 136 pounds. I do have arm muscle and abs, but a little bit of fat around the stomach area to work off
I'm in New Zealand, in the south island, and I have gone to boxing lessons for a year. But there doesn't seem to be many trainers around here.
What weight grade would I be? What's my best bet? I wanna start now before I come too old... but don't know how to go about it...
Thanks
you will need a trainer to learn you the basic, apart from that, running, skipping, push upps, sit upps, chins, dipps, squats is a good start.
impossibel to say what weight your gonna end at, depends on how much you grow, train, eat etc
veldrak 01-07-2006, 09:34 AM Thanks mate.
Chins? Sorry still don't know all the terms...
masterdirector 01-07-2006, 09:51 AM chin ups. like pull ups, but your fingers/palms point toward you instead of out.
hitting a tire with a mallet or chopping wood are good workouts. running in a shallow pool. underwater squats (google it). lunges, darting and dashing,
catching leaves is very useful too. start out using your left hand. keep your hand open, then when you touch the leaf, snap your wrist and bring the leaf back to you, then get another leaf with the same hand. Keep doing this until you can catch 5 leaves without dropping any, with just your left hand. It'll help you develop a good jab.
This is good but I wouldn't advise it until you learn to punch properly and are very advanced. punching a log into the side of a hill is very good. it'll give you fists of iron once you get it pounded all the way in. that's a pretty extreme workout though.
catching tennis balls. Get a friend to throw tennis balls in a random order at your left and right sides. Say about 3-5 feet away from you where you have to jump to the side to catch them. This is a good reaction exercise and leg exercise.
good luck

works lats as well as biceps
veldrak 01-07-2006, 10:09 AM Ahhh I see, thanks. So pretty much I gotta find a trainer before I can do anything?

dont think he was being sarcastic and plus if u think thts sarcasim try spking to some of the other members here ;)
if you want to get in shape for boxing do the following , it worked for me , eat fruit as much as u want , and drink milk or water , no shit like coke fanta tht stuff just makes u tire easier , tri and have one decent meal a day cos friut doesnt always fill u up , go out running in the morning ,or at night when you get in from work or college or watever you do ,and if you aint a big runner start of doing a mile then increase it , get a mate to go sparring with and spar after you have been running, do some shadow boxing in the house and some sit ups and push ups and also squates (or how ever you spell it lol) also tri and do some light dumbells about 5lbs each arm and do them as fast as you can to build up speed , ahhh and also try and skip thts good to get your legs stronge , thts all i can think off ryt now ;)
oooh yeah i forgot
diet is important.
no sugar and little salt
apart from that you should eat loads of fruit and greens, good carbs like oathmal and durum wheat pasta, fore protein eat chicken, turkey, tuna and salmon.
some fat is good just stay away from animal fat.
masterdirector 01-07-2006, 10:48 AM I wasn't being sarcastic.
and some boxers go days without showering so water doesn't get in their pores and make them weigh more. I think this is crazy and wouldn't recommend it. Just fight at a weight you can reach without going to such extremes.
