View Full Version : Anyone Right handed fight Southpaw?
Bad Intentions 12-28-2005, 04:54 PM 2day i just Tried to go southpaw an i realized im better that way even though im right handed, my jab is much more str8 an powerfull in the southpaw position, anyone right handed fight southpaw? I got more power in my right hand an if i throw my left from the southpaw stance it might not be as effective, is it a good idea to fight southpaw if ur right handed?
Manfredo Jr 12-28-2005, 05:00 PM no but im left handed and am a orthadox
Soliloquy 12-28-2005, 05:03 PM i think its a good idea. i tried it, really liked it because of the faster, stiffer jab, except the counter left is a lot weaker then a big right hand.
VERSATILE2K12 12-28-2005, 05:03 PM I fight either way sorta like what tyson used to do fight square sometimes or switch up since I have power in both hands
patto1984 12-28-2005, 08:41 PM I used to switch up quite often when sparring, occasionally when I would feel comfortable enough with the guy I would do it in a fight.
The great thing that I found with going to a left handed stance was that my right hand/hook was so close to the guy. As soon as were in close Im digging a hard hook to the body followed by another to the head. I had some great power in those hooks.
I found that if I couldnt deal with a left handed guys style when were fighting then I would switch up to a south paw. Not that I fought better as a southpaw but it appeared to me that south paws in general dont even know how to fight them.
I fought some rounds against a guy from England up at Galaxy. He at the time was the reigning nabf or usba jr middle title holder at the time. He was a south paw and I started out fighting orthadox against him. After not much success I switched to a south paw stance and turned it into a war. I faired much better against him as a south paw. Again, not because I fought better as one but because he couldnt fight them as well. His name was Gary Stretch, he was in a movie that I saw where he was playing some crazy killer.
Rockin' :boxing:
so true. everytime im up against a southpaw i switch, half the time you'll see a confused look on there face. They dont know how to counter against theyre own.
I heard Bruce lee would fight southpaw becus he believed the stronger arm should do most of the work.
Cockyb 12-28-2005, 08:43 PM i dnt know if u knew but
da golden boy oscar dela hoya is actualy left handed yet he fight as an orthodox
&
winky wright is actualy right handed yet fights as a southpaw!
which proves dat it definately makes ur jab more effective but as was da case with dela hoya in his early years as a pro- a weak rear-hand! which sum commentatots considered useless!
safe

i feel my left to be stronger when i switch to southpaw for some reason:S
Scottie2Hottie 12-28-2005, 11:00 PM im a righty that fights southpaw too. i had great power in my right hand, but a weaker jab and hook with my left. so i switched it up...now i have great power in my jab and right hook, and increased power in my left since its on my power side. i feel like a way more balanced fighter that way.
SilentButViolent 12-28-2005, 11:42 PM im right-handed and fight southpaw, i just feel more comforablte fihgting in a southpaw stance than orthodox
VERSION1 (V1) 12-29-2005, 02:07 PM im right-handed and fight southpaw, i just feel more comforablte fihgting in a southpaw stance than orthodox
fighting in the orthodox stance i feel very uncomforablte but fighting southpaw stance it feels more natural
Gattz187 12-29-2005, 06:59 PM i started out as a southpaw then i got used to orthadox. when i was first starting out orthadox it was very uncomfortable but once u get used to it it ll be the other way around for the southpaw stance
Pugnacious_Z 12-30-2005, 02:06 AM whoever is a right-handed southpaw hasnt any focus. every knows it will be easier for a right-handed fighter to fight southpaw but its not effective. thats why you must have the focus to fight orthodox until you get used to it. its like learning the wrong techniques coz its easier for u.
Undefeated 12-30-2005, 02:36 AM yea the same with me i accualy feel a lil akward when i fight orthodox....but im right handed..but when i switch to south paw ma jab is stronger and stiffer and ma left is strong to.... i cant throw a left hook in ortodox stance as fast and good as i throw a right hook in southpaw stance its weird but i could fight both mostly south paw tho...plus i could move better in southpaw i dont kno why lol

nice post..
LHWchamp5 12-31-2005, 05:14 PM For throwing a jab of course you'll have more power, but how effective is your left??
I suggest you strengthen your left, if you get a strong left jab, you'll be set, stick with the left, drop a bomb with the right..
Even in south paw a strong left is very effective..
If your more comfortable south paw cause yoru jab is stronger with your right hand, i suggest you work with your left..
the problem isnt the jab it's your other punches, especially with the left hand. It feels akward and you wont get it right.
You got to start from scratch.
I used to be able to fight as both but i have taken a break and now i have a hard time throwing hooks with my left as a southpaw.
eazy_mas 01-01-2006, 03:39 PM nice topic
I newbie in boxing.
I think the punch does not only depend on the arms but also wieght shifting and midsection muscle.
could anyone explain the difference in the weightshifting for southpaw and orthrodox
