View Full Version : Martial arts show picks fight with 'Contender'
trinidadpr87 01-09-2005, 05:36 PM THE rabble-rousing pres ident of the Ultimate Fighting Championship is slapping boxing aficionado Sylvester Stallone across the face with a $5 million challenge.
Dana White, who oversees the mixed martial arts fighting league and its new ****e TV reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter," wants the winner of his series to fight the winner of Stallone's boxing show, "The Contender."
"Boxing is in shambles," White told The Post yesterday. "Back in the day, whoever the heavyweight champ was, was considered the baddest man on the planet, and that's just not the case anymore not by a long shot and we're willing to put our money where our mouth is."
The proposed match would be televised on cable or pay-per-view or held privately. "However they want it," White said.
NBC officials, Stallone and "Contender" creator Mark Burnett declined to comment yesterday.
On "Ultimate Fighter," debuting Jan. 17, 16 contestants will be split into teams. They will live and train together, and ultimately fight in a Las Vegas bout live on ****e.
Fighters will be ejected until only two fighters in separate weight classes remain and they'll be offered six-figure contracts with the UFC.
On "The Contender" a new NBC series from reality show guru Burnett, "Rocky" star Stallone, Jeffrey Katzenberg and boxer Sugar Ray Leonard 16 boxers square off each week in the ring. Losers face elimination.
The two finalists square off in the finale for a $1 million prize.
The show is slated to debut Feb. 21.
what do you think about this offer.
Dyl-G 01-09-2005, 09:09 PM thatd be hella good television, it may show that its not staged, not saying that any of it is but it would be good competition
An ultimate fighter would have his way with a boxer, it shouldn't even be considered.

i was wondering about the cross over of martial arts into boxing. in most asian fighting styles, the punches are delivered sharp and straight, directly in front to maximize power. when the motion is finished, their shoulders are square forward. A boxer is usually rotated and turned at the end, and the hook is a ridiculously wide motion. why don't boxers apply a little of the martial arts styles?
Fallout 03-08-2005, 06:54 PM MMA does this because its trying to get the attention of boxing fans. A mixed martial artist in a boxing match would get killed. A boxer in a mixed martial arts fight would most likey have his arm broken or be choked out. They are different sports.
Boxing is part of MMA, but onl a part. Boxing in boxing is much different than boxing in MMA.
For example, the double jab in MMA is a lot less useful than in boxing. In boxing a strong quick jab can be used to keep distance, close the distance and control the pace of a fight. In MMA, a jab is ONLY useful to setup other punches. If you double jab you are asking to have someone walk thru your punches. In MMA every punch needs to be thrown with power. If you don't throw every punch with some serious power behind it your opponet won't be afraid of your power and will take you down at will. Espically of a double jab. They will time your second punch and put you on your back. It doesn't help that double jabing normaly leaves your legs in a postion that makes it impossible to defend a single leg takedown.
A pure boxer will NEVER do well in MMA. Just like a pure wrestler or a pure jiu jitsu fighter will never do well. You need to cross train. A world class boxer could be very sucessful in MMA with some cross training. Each him to sprawl and get him to work on a good defensive guard and he would do some serious damage. However, then he isn't a boxer anymore, he is a mixed martial artist.

Because most stand up martial arts, espically thoses based in most asian counties, suck. Most forms of karate, tai kawn do and other stand up styles are out of date. Tai Kawn Do was developed to kick people off horses for example. Muay Thai is easily the most complete stand up style to come out of asia. And what does Muay Thai translate into in english? Thai boxing.
For just throwing punches, western boxing has no equal. A western boxer who knows how to defend or even use the clinch and leg kicks is a very dangerous man.
P.S The best hook is a quick tight motion. Any boxer that throws a wide hook that leaves him all turned around sucks.

Absolutely. I dont think mixing the two makes much sense to me. It would be completely unfair unless they imposed rules on the MMA guys. Then what would be the point?
The Fix 03-08-2005, 07:06 PM they are two different sports, which rules would they follow?

Actually you're quite wrong about all forms of Karate and etc are out of date. Kyukoshinkai Karate developed by Mas Oyama (a Korean) was one of the first schools to defeat an actual REAL MATCH against one of the top THAI schools many decades ago. This match was full-contact.
Mas Oyama has also fought bulls just to prove his own art. Yes, you can actually find video footage of this.
Your definition of Muay Thai is also incorrect. it translates to either the study of eight or nine "limbs."
1. Two Knees
2. Two Elbows
3. Two Arms
4. Two Legs
5. Head
Originally it was called Muay Boran which preceded the SPORT of MUAY THAI. They basically took a lot of the more deadly and moves the way they did the same with older forms of Karate or any martial art. Just the way they modified boxing from Greece or even today's MMA. I remember the first UFCs were a lot more brutal and even remember watching Royce CHOKE OUT Kimo with his own hair.

 Do yourself a favor and put the pipe down.
The whole concept of a boxer vs mma is an ill concieved attempt by the mma people to promote their sport.
SonnyG8R 03-08-2005, 07:24 PM This Fallout guy seems to have a clue.
Good points man.
Most of us MMA fans feel the same way that Fallout does. This is old news...
Sir_Jose 03-09-2005, 12:36 AM Prett much anyone who knows anything about fighting will tell you what Fallout told you.
Boxing match= Boxer
MMA Rules= MMA
plain and simple.

I never said all forums of Karate were out of date and no longer practical. A lot of forums are still very useful. However, they have more in common with kickboxing than traditional forums of karate.
Kyukoshinkai Karate is a prime example of this. Its a very burtal style. Its excellent for both sport and self defence. However, it is in the minority. There is no questioning that.
Also, I think you took my translation of muay thai a bit too literal. I mean it as in when people here muay thai most of them have no idea what I am talking about. However, if I call it thai boxing, people are able to picture that. Yes, they know its different than boxing but they can tell a lot of it is the same.
Also, Royce never choked out Kimo with his hair. Royce held Kimo's hair from the guard as Royce punched Kimo in the face. Royce finished the fight with an armbar.

The whole concept of a boxer vs mma is an ill concieved attempt by the mma people to promote their sport.
A lot of MMA people are just egar to take on boxing because boxing is still viewed as the premier combat sport in the world. If you ask the average person if someone that wasnt a world class boxer got into a street fight with a world class boxer who would win, they would never assume it might not be the boxer.
This is why MMA fans attack boxing. Is it ill concieved? Yes and No. No because its not going to gain much respect from the boxing community, but yes because there is no such thing as bad press.
Atwa_66 03-09-2005, 12:04 PM I love Boxing, and I hated UFC, but my one friend is interested in UFC, so I have started watching it with him, now I love it, UFC is incredible, Boxing is and always will be my sport, but UFC comes to the table with alot of stuff. I have been watching The Ultimate Fighter every week so far, and haven't missed a thing, it is currently my favorite show. I watched the Contender, and I wasn't impressed, I expected alot more. I think I may like The Ultimate Fighter more than the Contender because I know the guys better from the Ultimate Fighter. If anyone watches the show, post who your favorite Fighter is. Team Liddell kicks ass, Josh Kauscheck, and Diego Sanchez are my favorite fighters, and I like that Forrest guy too.

It's a weird challenge, like everyone said, In a boxing match a boxer will take it, MMA an mma fighter takes it. Really simple
an MMA fighter is THE BADDET MAN on earth because :
he is gonna fight you stand up
then he throws you to the ground
then comes ground fighting
and with ground fighting ,not only can you do armbar , it s the best way of fighting because YOU CAN BORE TO DEATH THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHING .
BadMagick 03-09-2005, 04:36 PM That's a stupid bet. Just a publicity stunt, like everyone has pretty much said.
tracylee 03-09-2005, 04:42 PM I agree..very stupid idea! Two totally different sports
and with ground fighting ,not only can you do armbar , it s the best way of fighting because YOU CAN BORE TO DEATH THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHING .
I really enjoy ground fighting, especially really technical grappling fights, check out Sakuraba vs. Newton, or almost any Nog fight before the Fedor fights.....

Yeah, because boxing has nothing like that *cough*ruiz*cough*.
Both sports can be boring, both sports can be exciting. Styles make fights.

Genki Sudo vs Bang Ludwig. That was an exciting ground fight. Hell, any Genki Sudo fight.
If any of you boxing fans tihnk you know the name Genki Sudo, he was the 155 lb japanese MMA fighter than fought Butterbean awhile back. He submitted him with a submission called a heel hook.
kapersky 03-10-2005, 01:21 AM nice thx m8
