Tyson still in talk with Duran as trainer

MIAMI, FL- Former World champ Roberto Duran is reportedly on his way to Miami to meet with former Heavyweight champion "Iron" Mike Tyson.

"Tyson called me and asked if I could train him." Duran said. "He told me that he has arranged a place for me to stay while we train in Miami."

Duran says he is willing to train Mike, so long as the once undisputed heavyweight champ stays focused and on track. "I'm not going over there to waste my time." he said. "So he is going to have to obey me."

Duran says he will arrive in Miami sometime sunday, and from there he will meet with Tyson, so that the two can iron-out all the details.

Roberto Duran (b. June 16, 1951) is a famous and legendary boxer from Panama. He held world titles at four different weights - lightweight (1972-79), welterweight (1980), junior middleweight (1983-84) and middleweight (1989). He was also the only boxer to have fought in five different decades. He finally retired in January 2002 (having previously retired in 1998) following a bad car crash in October 2001, aged 52 with a professional record of 120 fights, 104 wins with 69 KOs. He was nicknamed Manos de Piedra (Hands of Stone). A popular legend is that Duran, as a youngster, knocked out a horse with one punch.

if tyson does what duran tells him to do, and soaks in a little of duran's fighting heart he could win a belt or two again

I knew Tyson wasn't going to retire, he needs the money too bad. Hey maybe Duran can train Mike to a title or two.(WBO, WBA)Tyson can still beat some of these heavyweights in my opinion.

Can you teach heart????? Give Tyson some stamina and some heart and we may see him knocking out some of those champions that don't belong.

I doubt it will make much difference, Tyson's just hoping everyone thinks a new trainer is the key to his success.

tyson needs a motivator asswipe, duran is a legend, known for never giving up, i dont think he needs to be a great technical trainer for tyson, tyson needs a mentor he hasnt had since cus and rooney, maybe he can feed off duran's fire, smartass

I dont think we will ever see tyson in a meaningful fight again

I thought tyson looked good in the williams fight, it's just that damn stamina of his can't last long enough. Duran better push this guy to the limit cause everybody's measuring today's tyson against the tyson of the eighties. It's never gonna be the same. Damn

Did Tyson fire Roach?

Kimmy

Tyson did look good against Williams until his heart, leg, knee, arm or whatever the excuse was caved in. Duran has never trained anyone before, yes he was a great fighter and some former fighters make excellent trainers but what part of Duran mental make up make him a great trainer??? When he had to weight drain before the second Leonard fight?? What disapline!
This is a ploy in order to sell more tickets. They want you to buy that Tyson is gonna hook up with Duran and all is sweet. FORGET IT!! Tyson is looking for an extra buck and Duran is looking for a mug to pay his bar bill.
Perfect match!

I don`t like the idea of Tyson fighting period, he is shot fighter. I don`t think hanging around a drunk Roberto Duran is gonna help either. uring The only good advice Duran will give Tyson during their time together will be where to install the mini bar!

It's a last gasp but it's worth a shot.
I always thought that Freddie was too laid back to train Mike.
Mike needs an authority figure....Duran might fit the bill.
People will still pay to see Tyson and beating Ruiz, Brewster or Byrd isn't out of the question.

tyson tore his left knee ligament in the first round of the fight. That screws up everything, speed and power. The fact that he kept going shows that he still has heart, but i think he needs discipline. he wouldve killed williams in three rounds if he hadn't got injured. but three rounds is probably all he has. I for one would like to see a rematch, cause it was a good fight.

I really wanted Tyson to win against Williams because he was talking smart and - at the begining - fighting smart - and people pay attention to Iron Mike. Is he a shot fighter, maybe - but he will always have the punchers chance and if he can get in shape and get focused he could do something. He throws the type of punches that could knock anyone out - still - he just doesn't land them very much anymore.

What a bunch of crap.

How long do we have to wait for this crap to be on TV. Is Duran going to reverse 15 years of bad habits for 2 months and then let Tyson fight someone like Phil Jackson and have him win and then everyone will think that Tyson is the second coming of .... Tyson?

This is a NOVELTY, that's it.
Just another case of false hope on the part of the Tyson supporters.

Enough.

JabsRstiff, i salute you. It is very true. How many poor showings will it take for Tyson fans to grow up and stop living in the eighties. I wouldn`t pick Tyson over John Ruiz at this stage. He clearly is done and his fans refuse to accept it. Remember the lewis fight? What happend to the second coming of Tyson? why did he fight only in the first round then take a ***** beating the rest of the way? Tyson proved he had a chin in that fight, but little else!

Freddie Roach probably did not want to train him again or he may have asked him to retire and Mike decided not to so, he hired another trainer. To be honest, Mike needs the guy who was a co-trainer under Cus D'mato. I forgot his name but reportedly, he has offered his services to Mike.

You're speaking of Kevin Rooney.
Personally, I'd love to see Tyson back with Rooney.
When Tyson FAILS under Rooney, that will silence one of the louder, & more redundant, cries of the Tyson nutlickers.

Tyson is done. He's almost 40....& has taken some SERIOUS ASS WHOOPINS.

First of all....you're on the internet, also. So, you're in no position to call anyone an "internet geek".

Second, "nutlicker" is just a fun term used to describe someone who is overly fanatical about a particular fighter.
It's one thing to root like crazy for a fighter.....that just makes you a fan. But, when your loyalty leads you to lose touch with reality, that's when I'm afraid that the sweat of your boy's nut sack is the only possible reason for your state.
Anyone who thinks Mike Tyson is still a world class fighter is delusional.

the real problem is that there arent any world class fighters around, thats why i think he can probably still win a belt, i still do root for tyson because even though he is nowhere near his prime, you gotta admit the guy is still the most exciting heavyweight out there for the first couple rounds, i think we are all still waiting for the next tyson thats why he is still around. are brewster, ruiz, and now an old byrd worldclass? i dont think so, i think tyson could still take ruiz or brewster, dont you think so?

ALL Mike Tyson has going for him is the slop he has to fight against.
But even against those guys....if Mike can't get them out in 1-2 rounds they WILL beat him.

More than Tyson neds a new trainer....he needs his opposition to fear him again. That has been his biggest weapon since his release from prison.
But, I think no REAL fighter has an ounce of fear of him anymore...& with each loss, he's even less scary.

How would all of you Tyson fans feel if he gets punked by JOHN RUIZ ?

it would never happen, ruiz has a glass chin, he went down from a weak golota punch, why do you think he holds so much? trust me if tyson hit ruiz with the shots he hit williams with its over baby, over. what are you a ruiz nuthugger? who do you think is so godam "worldclass"?

I loathe John Ruiz...hate him more than any fighter in history. So, forget that.

There you go.....Ruiz has a weak chin, Mike Tyson can punch....automatic Tyson KO ?
This was the same formula that was supposed to see Williams KO'd in two rounds by Tyson.

I would love to see Tyson stretch Ruiz.....but, my money would be on Ruiz smothering him, frustrating him...& then beating him down.
That's, unfortunately, how I see a Ruiz-Tyson fight coming out.

I believed (or wanted to believe) in the Tysons comeback when I heard Freddy Roach was in his corner. Then there was the "world class" performance against Danny Williams (in which Tyson more quited than was ko-ed).

Now Tyson will have Duran in his corner, and Tyson will be transformed back into his former self?

Even If I try very hard I can not see Tyson return to the Top of the game. Vitaly will do his Williams thing, Byrd will outbox him, Ruiz will fustrate him.

"No Mas" Tyson already learned without the help of Duran.

I really like Tyson, aside from the tremendous fighter I think he's also a very sensitive guy, with a big heart somewhere inside...but he's totally shot physically, mentally.
Please Mike hang up the gloves!!
I wish some millionaire fan of Tyson could pay his IRS and offer him the second life he deserves.
He may have suffered enough already :(

I`d pick the following fighters over Tyson at this Stage:
Klitscko
Ruiz
Byrd
Sammuel Peter
James Toney

As Williams showed though, there could be many other fighters capable of defeating Mr Tyson. As for his relationship with Duran. Anyone who seriously think this will make a difference big enough for Tyson to beat a class fighter need their head examined. Tyson is the equivlent of Joe Louis when he fought Rocky Marciano. Shot, broke and only his name and past glories left!

If Tyson could come in with the same power and intensity as against Williams with a little more head movement and speed. (from conditioning and training with Duran) he could clear out the heavyweight divsion. I dont no i keep hearing the ifs but who knows if Duran finally gets through to Tyson we could see Tyson Vs Vitali in a real good fight some time in the future.
