View Full Version : Specificity and Your Sport BigDozer260 12-24-2005, 02:20 AM ............................... Soliloquy 12-24-2005, 02:23 AM Great, great, great post man. I too think that boxing is too "old school" in the fact that at all of the gyms i've been to, no weights involved, just old school pushups, chinups, bag work, etc.. Soliloquy 12-24-2005, 02:35 AM hey man, I will PM you about something a little later/ Brockton Lip 12-24-2005, 02:37 AM I agree. In my opinion, all the time (at least most), its good to get as sport specific as possible. There are some people that just spar the whole time. Pugnacious_Z 12-24-2005, 06:36 AM hey bigdozer, i think the reason why boxing is so old-school is becoz of the Saying "dont fix it if it aint broken". the training boxers go through has worked for them for centuries and they dont want to change their ways. My training (for muay thai, not boxing) DOES contain running, and therefore i've taken issue with a few things you've said. Roadwork is one of the things I talked about earlier, as far as specifity I had yet to see a boxer run around a ring. Now I've seen boxers shuffle around a ring, but not run. See wher I'm going with this? Shuffling is a sports specific action, for boxing forward, backward, side to side. But running is not specific to boxing. I know what your thinking; "But running is the best way to buid endurance" sure if you are a long distance runner. Does this mean u feel boxers do not need aerobic fitness? That having a good cardio vascular system is of no advantage whatsoever to a boxer? Boxing has between 4 and 12 2-3 minute rounds, and a 1 minute rest interval between rounds. Not only is it not an endurance sport(there aren't any true endurance sports)but it barely an aerobic sport. So why focus the most of your time on aerobic activity. What kind of sport is it then? i mean, to my mind boxing (or MT) encorparates all 3 energy systems, of which the aerobic system is just as important as the other 2, for recovary between rounds if nothing else. I might be reading this wrong, but do you beleive that sports training should be 100% sports specific? i dont agree, if thats what u were saying. Peace. yeah same to you when you get back how about suggestin a brief training regime for boxing for about an hour twice a week? opethdrums 01-08-2006, 06:55 PM read up on how holyfield trained !!! joeknighton 01-10-2006, 11:28 AM As a boxer who does two hours with little rest, traing at my club with other boxers. We do skipping, 5 rounds of bagwork, 4 rounds of sparring and then 3, 3 minute circuits. Now to not only be able to cope with that but also improve when you are heading for a bout (fight) you need to have a strong basic fitness which I achieve by running interval sessions of running/sprinting/hills of 4/5 miles (7/8 km) 3 times a week. I would like to know if you have undertaken a full on boxing training session including 3/4 rounds of sparring in a row with just a minutes break inbetween. I doubt you have, if you have I would listen to any advice you can give. But I expect you would struggle in your first round of sparring with a decent boxer, nevermind 3 full. I would also like to add when I train I give 100% from beggining to end holding nothing back and I have seen incredible improvements.I would like to add for any boxer that the most inportant thig of all is: technique, technique, technique. joeknighton 01-10-2006, 11:29 AM I was referring to some other posted advice!!!!!! any body got any advice??? vBulletin® v3.7.1, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
