View Full Version : David Haye - Heavyweight hope?
ophqui 12-17-2005, 11:46 AM After Hayes devastating 45 second knockout of Alex Gurov to win te cruiserweight european title he started talking about a move to heavyweight. What do u think of his prospects as an H/W? I think personally he's already got the cruiserweight division by the throat, easily the most talented fighter in the division, but how would he measure up as an H/W
illKOu666 12-17-2005, 11:56 AM untill he fights Carl Thompson, he aint nothin
Kimmy 12-17-2005, 12:27 PM untill he fights Carl Thompson, he aint nothin
He should have beaten Thompson first time. Haye's chin is a really big problem, too big for world level, he'll end up like Audley Harrison.
ophqui 12-17-2005, 01:55 PM he's been knocked down once in his career, never knocked out, why do u say his chin is a problem?
RobbieD 12-17-2005, 03:03 PM Because unless you have an absolute iron jaw, never been rocked or knocked down in your career then people will always say you have a glass jaw.
Insane I know.

And who has beaten to prove this?
Mormeck,Jones,Bell, and Braithwaite are all ahead of him.
if he wants to test himself make him fight steve cunnigham in an eliminator or Fight academy can bring over Kelvin Davis next. This guy is a knockout waiting to happen ie David haye
Ranger2408 12-17-2005, 05:01 PM He should have beaten Thompson first time. Haye's chin is a really big problem, too big for world level, he'll end up like Audley Harrison.it wasnt his chin, he just took thompson too lightly and fell in love with his own power and gassed himself out in 4 rounds, prior to that he had thompson all over the place.

Yep, it was more to do with his poor conditioning those days and his desire to KO Thompson.
It was probably the best thing ever to happen to him.
He needs to fight for a Cruiser title and put on a good show before he moves up!
Royboy 12-18-2005, 02:30 PM I think he is definately for real. I've said before that I believe he is far too strong for the vast majority of cruisers and I truly believe he can be a massive success at heavy.....As long, of course as he doesn't defeat himself first (by his well documented lack of commitment to training etc.)
Imagine what he would have done to Audley and probably Danny Williams last weekend...?
He looks to me as if he is now taking his training seriously and I think he is THE one to watch in this country. As for his power, it really is awesome, I know-I've felt it!
double O 12-18-2005, 03:12 PM ABSOLUTELY ,he's the most exciting fighter we have after Hatton.IMO
ophqui 12-20-2005, 10:40 AM And who has beaten to prove this?
Mormeck,Jones,Bell, and Braithwaite are all ahead of him.
Mormeck = tko Gurov rnd 8
Haye = K.O Gurov rnd 1
Not a fair comparison i know, but it certainly proves something. To my mind O'neil Bell would be easy money for Haye at this point. Im not gonna comment on Braithwaite cos i've never seen him fight, but from a quick scan on boxrec it appears that he lost to Bell. Oh dear.

Well, he needs to take care of his home division first. Knock off the Maccarrinelli-Nelson winner and then give Thompson a farewell loss. After that he'll be in perfect position to fight the real Cruiserweight champion (winner of Mormeck-Bell). Or he can take a fight in America to earn a little more esposure, and take the title fight next. But, back to the question at hand.
I refuse to believe that a big cruiserweight is too small for most heavyweights. Size doesn't mean ****. Haye's power is prodigious, and if he's learned from his loss, he can successfully move up, and at the very least win an alphabet title or two.
The Wire 12-21-2005, 07:15 AM I think Haye could beat everyone except Toney. Haye vs Lamon Brewster would be a great fight. I dont think Haye's chin is too bad, but it is possible he'll end up like Herbie Hide who has got a cruiserweight's chin. I think he should stay at cruiser and clean up there before thinking about moving up to heavy. I think Haye can definitely be a legendary cruiserweight.
Royboy 12-21-2005, 02:00 PM Agreed.....it is in his interests to make a huge name for himself in the cruisers before moving up. He definately could already cope though, imagine the mess he'd make of some of the british heavies....Krence, Mcdermott etc.. no disrespect to them they are good fighters, but Haye is in a completely different class. I can't wait to see him box again...
AREALFIGHTER 12-21-2005, 03:14 PM his ko og gurov was just shocking it was visious. he should punch harder as a heavy because he dosn't have to make weight
Bozo_no no 12-22-2005, 03:31 PM Mormeck = tko Gurov rnd 8
Haye = K.O Gurov rnd 1

It proves NOTHING.
Mormeck isn't a big one punch KO fighter. He's methodical, breaks guys down with a blistering body attack, has huge chin, and is relentless.
Haye has nothing on Mormeck at this point.
He's a promising prospect, but he has a lot to prove (like beating a top Cruiserweight) before he's regarded as a top Cruiserweight or even thinks about going up to Heavyweight.
boxstarr 12-30-2005, 04:10 PM ive been very impressed with what ive seen and think that, especially in todays situation, he could be one of the top heavies
however i think he should climb to the top of the cruisers first so that he can gain experience for the big guys with more power
TheHoff! 01-01-2006, 03:48 PM Yeah i think Haye needs to get more experience and fight the top cruisers first. He also needs fights that are gonna test his stamina cause thats the main question mark against him at the moment... When he moves up to heavy he's gonna be fighting guys who are bigger and stronger and wont go down as easy, so he'll have to be able to have the stamina to go into the later rounds.
TheEvilSaint 01-02-2006, 05:44 PM haye wont cut it at HW. with stamina problems and a weak chin and a small frame, he wont be able to stand up to the "giants" of the HW division.

We'll have to agree to disagree there mate.....He's still only young and will naturally get heavier/stronger. It will be a good few years before he is in with any 'giants' at Heavy and it's going to be great watching him on that road.I really believe there is plenty more to come.

RobbieD 01-08-2006, 08:20 AM What was that about Mormeck?
ophqui 01-08-2006, 01:00 PM lol exactly. I think last night speaks for itself
Southpaw16 01-19-2006, 02:50 AM And who has beaten to prove this?
Mormeck,Jones,Bell, and Braithwaite are all ahead of him.
Add Dale Brown to that list as well.
trinidadpr87 01-20-2006, 06:49 PM Haye definately has great power but i'm still worried about his chin.
trinidadpr87 01-20-2006, 06:50 PM Add Dale Brown to that list as well.
Yup him as well.
LostGuy 01-24-2006, 05:13 AM david haye needs to grow to be a real heavyweight threat. he should try to conquer the cruiserweight division first, then if he can grow enough move on up to heavyweight.
