Dempsey 1919 12-16-2005, 04:27 PM who would win? the big bear or the easton assassin?

marvdave 12-16-2005, 06:39 PM Larry Holmes would win this bout. In a battle of Jabs, Holmes movement would be the difference. Liston wouldn't be able to force his will on Holmes. Certainly a very intriuging bout.
I say Holmes by decision over 15.
A great fantasy matchup..thanks
Skydog 12-17-2005, 01:07 AM Oo, good fantasy match-up, Butterfly. This would be very entertaining: that battle for the top jab. I think this would be a bit like Ali-Liston, though much closer and probably not a KO.
Holmes UD over Liston.
This would be a great fight. They both were very skilled and they both had an amazing left jab. I rate Listons jab the greatest in heavyweight history, and together with his superior power, he would present Holmes with a very tough challenge.
Still, I think Holmes would be able to stay away from Liston enough to take home a close decision. Further, I consider his chin to be tough enough to take Listons best. Holmes also had better stamina.
Larry Holmes by UD.
THE REAL NINJA 12-18-2005, 01:28 AM i agree with all of you but i see some knock downs for both on the way to a dec for holmes
Dempsey 1919 12-18-2005, 01:45 AM if you watch clay-liston I, liston is throwing punches, but clay is moving back from them. however, it looks like liston is almost hitting clay, probably because of the speed of liston's jab that he always came close to hitting clay. however, holmes is not as fast as ali, so i suppose holmes would be getting hit by the same shots that almost hit clay, and with liston's power, that would take a toll on holmes. i suppose if it went the distance, holmes would win a ud, but i don't think it would. holmes would be stopped in 10 or 11 rounds. holmes would probably give liston the best fight, without beating him. the only one that would beat liston would be ali, and he did, twice. that's why in my top 10 hw list, liston is number 2, and holmes is number three, both under number 1 ali.
Skydog 12-18-2005, 02:46 AM Holmes could hit very well, indeed. I would say he hits a bit harder than Ali.
Don't believe? Go see what he does to Marvis Frazier.

Larry Holmes could definitely hit harder than Muhammad Ali. He was also a better defensive boxer than was Ali, and he had the same tough chin and solid stamina. Ali was faster though, and much better at the mind games.

yeah, holmes did hit slightly harder than ali, but ali definetely had a better chin. shavers floored a prime holmes with one punch, but he couldn't drop a washed up ali, which says something.

damm you overate ali man, you have to realise the reality. holmes have pretty good chance to beat ali in his prime. i think holmes would beat liston by ud.

yeah, he had a pretty good chance, the best chance out of anybody. but he would fall short. yeah, and like i said, if the fight went the distance, then holmes would win a ud, but liston is too powerful and would be catching holmes.

No, that doesn't say anything really...
I don't think being knocked down has anything to do with your chin. That could happen to anybody. It is how well you take the punch that counts. Holmes got right back up, and even though he was shaken up, he survived the round. Same with Ali. He got beaten down bad by Frazier in the 15th, but got right back up.
I think Ali and Holmes are pretty close when it comes to the chin departement. Forced to choose, I would say Ali has maybe a slightly better beard. But not by much though.

ali fought about 11 rounds with a broken jaw! do you know that if you throw a punch with a broken jaw, then all the nerves connecting your arm and jaw will contract, and that would hurt like no tomorrow! so imagine the pain ali went through everytime he threw a punch. do you think holmes could endure that? wait, do you think ANYONE could endure that? i don't think so.

I have to believe that Rocky Marciano could. You can say whatever you want about his size and his skills, but one cannot overlook the fact that he was a tough sob. :boxing:
Skydog 12-19-2005, 07:11 PM George Chuvalo most certainly could endure that.
DAMN this was a real tough one, hmmm maybe holmes on points
George Chuvalo most certainly could endure that.
That's true.
Dempsey 1919 12-20-2005, 10:27 AM George Chuvalo most certainly could endure that.
alright, chuvalo, and maybe marciano, but nobody else.
Skydog 12-20-2005, 03:56 PM Marciano couldn't handle the pain, but he had so much heart that he wouldn't care if it hurt. Same with Frazer.
Chuvalo probably wouldn't feel a damn thing. They guy is so tough you could shoot him in the head and he wouldn't go down.
Dempsey 1919 03-04-2007, 01:52 AM bump......
Southpaw Stinger 03-04-2007, 09:45 AM I must favour Liston in this fight. Both were jabbing kings with the reach and power going to liston and the speed to Holmes. I think if Liston boxed cleverly and used his power well he could stop Holmes late.
ceboxer15 03-04-2007, 09:15 PM great match-up! this could be a close fight. Liston would give Holmes some toruble. Still though, I see Holmes surviving the punishment to earn himself a UD.
