The Philippine even with the Filipinos short stature is unquestionably a BASKEBALL CRAZY COUNTRY, every where you go you will find a place to shoot hoops....

But the last few years, decades Philippine status as best Asian Basketball Country has slipped from Hero to Zero no thanks to the Giants of Asia like China, but also no thanks to Professional Basket Ball...

Now the Baskeball Crazy Nation has something to look forward to again, we are getting ready to produce an Olympic Qualified Team, remember only two slots are reserved for Asia, As early as now we have "Chot Reyes" as head coach and basically he has a list of players already, made a list of young guys who would peak by 2007 to 2008.

Professional:
Kenneth Duremdes - Sta Lucia
Denis Espino - Sta Lucia
Brandon Cablay - Alaska
Sonny Thoss - Alaska
Jimmy Alapag - Talk n Text
Mark Telan - Talk n Text
Willie Miller - Talk n Text
Yancy de Ocampo - Talk n Text
Jayjay Helterbrand - Ginebra
Marck Caguioa - Ginebra
Ren-Ren Ritualo - Fed Ex

Tony Dela Cruz - Shell
Erick Menk - Ginebra
Nic Belasco - San Miguel

Amateurs:
LA Tenorio - Ateneo
Tyrone Washington - Wellcoat

Unlike you joma and chupacola, me and thrilla know the basketball happenings here in RP and I agree with the selection in the mind of Chot Reyes because he wants to form a team whose ultimate goal is to play in the 2008 olympics. Note that all the names in your list except for Duremdes and Espino are under 26 and the olympics will four years from now so by that time they will be four years older. This is a national training pool that will play in international tournaments together for four long years before hopefully realizing the dream of representing a once basketball proud country in the summer olympics and if you include older players they might not be able to sustain enough energy to withstand the run and gun style system of chot reyes. Btw, I agree that Rich Alvarez must be in the pool but nothing is final yet since the roster of 24 players will be annouced by chot at the end of this month.

I am suggesting that we should dedicate our money and effort in supporting soccer or sepaktakraw, or any other sports that don't require height. Soccer require agility and speed and Im pretty sure, filipinos have all those two factors mentioned which we could use. Our neighboring asian countries are good at it like Japan and South Korea. Why couldn't we concentrate on sports like soccer which in my point of view we have much of a chance of winning?

I am not saying that we're not good at basketball. The truth is, we're really good at it. One evidence of how great we are was when we won the ABC Championship during the 80's era. But noting that we were reinforced by players who were only naturalized filipinos (actually they are not at all pinoys), this feat is not 100% achievement for our country (maybe a little over 50%!). And things are a lot different in competing for Basketball supremacy today as compared to the time of Caloy Loyzaga. Players then were way much shorter compared to now (take a look at Yao Ming, the gigantic 7'6" player of China), who would guard him? And let me add that China's average height is 6'5" (Paras was 6'5" and he was playing center with Shell turbo chargers during his prime in the PBA). And I am only speaking of Asia, what about the rest of the world? Argentina, Brazil, Lithuania, and the US of A! They are not only tall, they are agile and can jump and dunk the ball in front of smaller opponents.

Am i being too skeptical? Maybe not. Because deep inside I am a true-blue pinoy die hard fan of basketball who is also dreaming of someday watching the Philippine Basketball Team play the likes of Shaq or Duncan in the Olympics. Im not that skeptical, I am just being realistic. And I hope Chot Reyes is as realistic as I am.

glad to hear your points kadyo and I know that Chot pick the players that he think will be peaking by 2007-2008 and took Duremdez & Espino as veterans who will lead the young guns...

chito i get your point that Filipinos can excel better in other sports like sepak takraw but like what I said before we are a Basketball Crazy Nation and we are still hoping to regain lost glory, maybe this last hurrah may give us the answers or enligthen us where we should focus our attention, and don't forget ASIA has 3 slots available on the next olympics, so that means we don't need to beat China we just need to be there at the top three and IMHO I think even a hastily formed PBA All-Star has a chance for 3rd place, remember Jaworski's National Team ...

Thrilla, when is the finals??? i think this is the first time PBA season ending January ???

Pare its just going into the quarterfinals stage.
They changed the format last year to conform with the
schedule of the important intl events like the Jones Cup,
and Asian Championships. The main aim of course is to get
back the Philippine team in the Olympics in Beijing come 2008.

Which is a good move since the Philippine team will have time
to practice together and prepare as a real team.

Malamang the finals will be sometime in Feb na.

JOM'S
01-08-2005, 01:00 AM
Nice to hear that is the reason for the delay, usually PBA season finishes before Christmas...

now I think they are really serious about this one and I for one believe that we are among the Top 3 in Asian Basketball, and who knows maybe a well prepared, complete & cohesive team have a chance against China ...

To answer Chito's question who will stop Yao Ming, maybe no one can, but maybe he can be limited I could still remember Chito Loyzaga 6'3" defending against a 7'3" center of North Korea, so i guess nothing is impossible ...

Article I fished out from ABANTE about the RP 5 Pool...

Bugbugin sa tune-ups ang RP squad No pain, no gain.

(Melchor Turno)

Reyes to name candidates today

THE THRILLS and frills of guessing on who will make it to the national team go up another level today when coach Chot Reyes announces his initial choices during halftime of the first wildcard game today at the Araneta Coliseum.

Out of 140 players who have played in the ongoing Gran Matador PBA Philippine Cup, Reyes will name 32 candidates for the team set to compete in several international competitions over the next three years.

The national team mentor will also name eight amateurs to bring the total of candidates to 40.

Considered shoe-ins in the team are Jayjay Helterbrand, Willie Miller, Tony dela Cruz, Nic Belasco and Eric Menk – players considered by Reyes as the best in their respective positions right now.

Also tipped to make the initial list are prolific scorers Danny Seigle, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Dondon Hontiveros, Kenneth Duremdes, John Arigo, James Yap and Mark Caguioa, playmaker Jimmy Alapag, big men Dennis Espino, Mark Telan, Yancy de Ocampo, Billy Mamaril, Rafi Reavis, Kerby Raymundo, Sonny Thoss and Rico Villanueva and enforcers Junthy Valenzuela, Rich Alvarez and Mark Pingris.

Heading the amateur prospects are 6-7 Anthony Washington, reigning UAAP and PBL MVP Arwind Santos, PBL top scorer Mark Cardona, Ateneo sentinel L.A. Tenorio and last year’s NCAA Rookie of the Year and MVP Gabby Espinas.

From the initial list will come the 18 pros and six amateurs Reyes is going to pick to join the national pool.

Chot names initial 40 cagers

By Joel Orellana, Reporter

FORTY players, eight from the amateur ranks, were named to the national men’s basketball pool on Sunday and will undergo a series of physical tests and interviews to land a spot on the team that will try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

National team head coach Chot Reyes made the announcement in a press briefing at the Araneta Coliseum, citing the players’ statistics and previous international experience and his consultation with the rest of the coaches in the Philippine Basketball Association that led to his drawing the list.

Six Asian Games campaigners were included in the pool—Eric Menk, Noy Castillo, Kenneth Duremdes, Dennis Espino, Dondon Hontiveros and Danny Ildefonso—with Ateneo de Manila University’s Japeth Aguilar as the youngest to be given an invitation.

“We limited the invitees to 31 years old and below,” said Reyes, adding that the physical tests will determine their conditioning, vertical leap, quickness, dexterity, and body fat percentage, among others.

“They will be tested in two weeks, and hopefully after that we can identify the players we need,” Reyes added.

Also getting invitations were Rommel Adducul, Jimmy Alapag, Don Allado, Richard Alvarez, John Arigo, Nic Belasco, Brandon Cablay, Mark Caguioa, Mike Cortez, Yancy de Ocampo, Tony de la Cruz; Jayjay Helterbrand, Billy Mamaril, Willie Miller, Ali Peek, Marc Pingris, Kerby Raymundo, Rafi Reavis, Renren Ritualo, Danny Seigle, Mark Telan, Joachim Thoss, Lordy Tugade, Junthy Valenzuela, Enrico Villanueva and James Yap.

Besides Aguilar, the 6-foot-9, 17-year-old son of former PBA player Peter, other amateur standouts included were the former’s Ateneo teammate LA Tenorio, La Salle’s Mark Cardona, FEU’s Arwind Santos, Gabby Espinas of Philippine Christian, former State U slotman Jay-Arr Reyes, Filipino American Anthony Washington and slam dunk artist Nino Canaleta of the University of the East.

Reyes clarified that the fitness tests will just be a part of the selection process, as the coaching staff will also interview all of the players.

“The player maybe superiorly fit but not that interested [in playing for the national team]. The interview will really matter,” said the Coca-Cola mentor, who made the final list Sunday after consulting with San Miguel coach Jong Uichico.

Reyes is eyeing Uichico, who handled the last all-pro team to the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea in 2002, as one of his assistants. Boyzie Zamar already is on the staff, having been recommended by the Basketball Association of the Philippines.

The Moro Lorenzo Gymnasium inside the Ateneo campus in Loyola will be the site of the fitness tests, according to Reyes.

, where the players will be given one-and-a-half hours to display their physical strengths.

Notable players who were left out of Reyes’ list were Jeffrey Cariaso, Rodney Santos, Victor Pablo, Marlou Aquino, Reynel Hugnatan, Olsen Racela, Johnny Abarrientos, Ronald Tubid and John Ferriols.

Overseas Pinoys pick RP team
THE GAME OF MY LIFE By Bill Velasco
The Philippine Star 01/10/2005

We literally received a flood of e-mail from readers of The Star and its website, philstar.com, in reaction to our invitation to recommend players for the new Philippine team that will be headed by Chot Reyes. Not surprisingly, an equal number of Filipinos overseas sent their votes, as well, showing heightened interest in the country’s campaign to overcome past disappointments in our favorite sport. Today, we give the absentee voters their due.

Dustin Cutchon (Dustin.Cutchon@vodafone.com), an IT analyst who has been keeping track of basketball developments all the way from England, writes:

"Greeting from friends here in the UK. We are behind Coach Chot and the Nationals (whoever they may be). My team: Jimmy Alapag, Jayjay Helterbrand and Willie Miller (he might have to improve his shooting) at point guard; Dondon Hontiveros, Renren Ritualo (although he might be too small), Kenneth Duremdes at shooting guard; Danny Siegle, Yancy De Ocampo, Tony dela Cruz and Mark Telan at small forward; Nic Belasco, Romel Adducul, Ali Peek and Enrico Villanueva at power forward; Eric Menk, Rafi Reavis, Danny Ildefonso (Arwind Santos can be a trainee)

"Let’s hope whatever team we perform would be happy to make all the sacrifices for the team and the country. Good luck! We are behind you all."

Comic strip cartoonist JC Reinoso (jixreinoso@email.com), sent this missive all the way from Canada:

"I left Manila in 1996 and I’ve stayed here in Vancouver, BC ever since. It doesn’t mean I don’t miss the Philippines though (or its favourite sport)..far from it. When I left, Alvin Patrimonio was having his way on the court (in the paint and not outside), Alaska had a greyhound running unit on the way to a Grand Slam, and the few Fil-Ams present appeared to be legit.

"Nine years later, I can see some semblance of "hope in action" in terms of our country’s basketball program. While I (like countless others) felt greatly scandalized and outraged by recent events, I also felt a great boost about recent developments and the PBA’s valiant decision to step up to the plate, get involved, and hunker down to the task of regaining our once-lofty position in the sport.

"Even halfway around the planet, I’ve never stopped monitoring the news about our national team program. All I can say is that I’m very excited about all the possibilities with Chot Reyes at the helm. His "take no prisoners" approach and loathing of mediocrity will take him and his team of "executioners" far towards the Olympic goal."

From within the country, Kenneth Inocencio (kinocencio@yahoo.com) harks back to Athens and our own international exposure with a warning:

"The Olympics showed a formula on how to win: 1. Teamwork 2. Motion offense 3. Players who can run, pass, defend and shoot and...

4. Shooters who really shoot the lights out

"I wish we can take Allan Caidic out of retirement. He’s the greatest shooter we’ve seen, period. I’ll settle for Noy Castillo. James Yap just hasn’t lived up to the hype... yet. Larry Fonacier, if he’s healthy enough, should be included in the pool. He’s got the height and the touch and give it four years, who knows.

"Imagine the opposition by that time: Yao Ming in 2008. That’s pretty scary."

Incidentally, at least three other people urged us to take Caidic out of retirement, expressing their apprehension that our team’s outside shooting will be weak.

Meanwhile, Ben Armonio, DDS (Cyber2th@aol.com) from California adds:

"As a big PBA fan and a long suffering basketball fanatic for Philippines basketball we welcome the great news with a big hope and the desire to see Philippines basketball regain some respectability in the international arena! With that in mind I have put together a team that I know will be very competitive in the years to come.

"Eric Menk, Tony Dela Cruz, Jayjay Helterbrand, Nic Belasco, Willie Miller, Joachim Thoss, Brandon Cablay, Renren Ritualo, Danny Seigle, Enrico Villanueva, Kerby Raymundo, Dondon Hontiveros, and a big guy in either an Andy Seigle if he is healthy, or a motivated Marlou Aquino.

"Everybody is excited and we are anxiously waiting for the build up and the formation of this team!"

Domminic Mendoza (menjime@yahoo.com), representing "UK Filipino basketball fanatics" says:

"Greetings from UK. Happy and Blessed New Year. We are avid fans of San Miguel ever since the time of Coach Ning Ramos.

"As far as these players are concerned, I think they have all the potentials and capabilities to carry on for the National Team to once and for all bag the crown."

Mendoza names many of the players already mentioned, but adds Talk ’N Text’s Mark Telan and Montaña Pawnshop’s Alex Compton.

Ariel Lubaton (ariel_lubaton@shaw.ca) a production clerk at Weatherford Canada sent this correspondence:

"I’m an immigrant here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada with my loving wife Armie. We both came from Santiago City Isabela. I’ve been a fan of PBA since the glory days of Jawo at Gilbey’s Gin, Ginebra, Añejo Rum. Sad to say I’m not there when the Gin Kings captured their last crown.

"It’s nice to hear that a MOA has been signed for the benefit of Philippine Basketball, and i think it is long overdue. Best wishes to the RP Team that is to be formed. May you bring back the glory."

Head coach Chot Reyes was set to announce the initial 32-player pool yesterday, and originally said a final list would be revealed at the end of the month. Until then, keep your suggestions coming in.

Undertaker thanks for the news...

i also think like some of the guys that we need a lot of shooters, a few more Caidics in the line up, to be in contention, we could not beat the Big Guys of Asia in the paint but we can try to burn them from outside, similar formula of South Korea National Team good mix of tall & fast guys with a lot of shooters ...

THRILLAinmanila

No one is in the caliber of Allan Caidic as of now, that's the problem.
We got good medium range shooters like Tony Dela Cruz, but the best 3 point shooters in the PBA right now are Ren Ren Ritualo, James Yap, and Noy Castillo. I would say they are at best 80-85% of Allan Caidic's accuracy and consistency.....

Thrilla we really need a few Caidics to open up the middle for our inside operators, but i guesss we have enough players who can shoot from the outside ....

CHINESE KAKAYANIN NA NG PINOY
(Ramil Cruz)

"With the incredible coaching staff plus ability of the players to work together, complement each other and to play within the system of the team, I don’t see any reason why we can’t beat the Chinese," banggit kahapon ng national men’s basketball coach sa PSA Forum.
"The possibility of beating them is always there, sa magiging team natin hindi na magiging pangarap na lang iyon."
Pinangalanan ng 41-anyos na dating Ateneo Blue Eagle ang kanyang 21-man national pool na binubuo nina guards Jimmy Alapag ng Talk ‘N Text, Mark Caguioa ng Ginebra, Mike Cortez ng Alaska, Dondon Hontiveros ng San Miguel Beer, Ren-Ren Ritualo ng FedEx, James Yap ng Purefoods, Jayjay Helterbrand ng Ginebra at Willie Miller ng TNT.
Bumubuo sa wingmen sina Nic Belasco ng SMB, Tony dela Cruz ng Shell, Kerby Raymundo ng P’foods, Danny Seigle ng SMB, Anthony Washington ng Welcoat at nag-iisang amateur at Rafi Reavis ng Coke, habang sa big men ay sina Romel Adducul ng Ginebra, Eric Menk ng Ginebra, Dorian Peña ng SMB, Yancy de Ocampo ng TNT, Sonny Thoss ng Alaska, Enrico Villanueva ng Red Bull at Dennis Espino ng Sta. Lucia.
"This team has a lot of hustle, heart and harmony," pagmamalaki ni Reyes. "And this team will not be afraid to take losses."

Nat’l cage team coach looking far and wide for prospects

Inquirer News Service

Editor's Note: Published on page A21 of the Mar. 3, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE SEARCH for players willing to play for the national basketball team has gone beyond the country's borders.

Philippine team head coach Chot Reyes is leaving for the United States early next month to track down three foreign-born players whom he plans to invite to the national team tryouts.

US-based dribblers Alex Cabagnot, Joe Devance and Ryan Reyes, all college basketball mainstays in the US, will be asked to come over should Reyes find them fit for the PBA-backed Philippine squad.

"We are still looking for players who can fit the system," said Reyes a day after choosing 21 players to the training pool from where the core of the national team will come.

"We will scout for players outside of the country because we want to form the best team possible," he added.

A 6-foot-1 point guard, Cabagnot played for University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans where he normed 9.6 points per game in the 2003-2004 US NCAA season.

Born in Quezon City but raised in Hawaii,
the 22-year-old Cabagnot started in 23 out of 25 games for the Vulcans and compiled 116 assists and 48 steals.

Cabagnot, who briefly saw action for Los Angeles Valley College, was a two-time Most Valuable Player at Eagle Rock High School.

Devance is a 6-foot-7 forward out of University of Texas El Paso. He played in the 2002-2003 US NCAA season and averaged three points in 28 games.

The 6-1 Reyes took care of the playmaking chores for Cerritos College and averaged 8.5 points, 4.2 assists and 3.3 rebounds for the Vikings.

A proud owner of 100 pairs of Nike shoes, the 21-year-old Reyes was born in Los Angeles, California, from Filipino parents Lito and Evelyn Reyes.

Should these players impress coach Reyes, they will join the 21 players in the national pool.

at first i was quite surprised at the selection process of coach chot but it seemed logical so i had to agree... i would have liked racela on that roster but then he will be two or three years older by the time of the olympics... if he can show he still has that tremendous court generalship come olympic year, he should be included... all in all, it is a good team... nga pala, eto na ba yung updated roster na nilabas ni chot???

ganda rin yung idea nya na buong PBA ang pool ng RP team, saka pwedeng matanggal sa team yung hindi nagpe-perform, para walang kampante, lahat aiming for the best...

Should these players impress coach Reyes, they will join the 21 players in the national pool.

i think this 3 players are the three FilAm guys mentioned earlier, we'll see how they will fit in, if ever they earn a slot at the national pool...

maganda talaga ang idea, sana wag ningas cogon at sana continue nila itong pool even after 2008, there is a chance na hindi mag-click itong team na to ngayon, pero i am sure we will get it right soon enough...

palagay ko nga di na nila paglalaruin si Asi...

Tsong sino papalit mo ke Jayjay palagay ko di pa makakapaglaro yon ...
malaking problema to tsong.... definitely papasok si alapag (with or without jayjay). ang kapalitan ni alapag (in case wala si helterbrand at siya ang magiging starter) malamang si cortez. cortez is a better penetrator, tsaka napansin nyo ba ang galing magfoul-bate at pumasa!

pre si arwind santos is the future ng basketball sa bansa natin, only on his early 20's pero almost everyday triple double sa PBL at UAAP. very unselfish, team player, and a very outstanding defensive player din, 6'4" to 6'5" ang height
