I just started my first class at this boxing gym tonight and it was really fun, prolly the greatest workout I've ever gotten. I'm fairly good at throwing straights and jabs and I don't look goofy when I throw them they're really clean and quick. My only problem is that I have a bit of a balance problem :( . I'm 6' 4" and when I try to throw left hooks or work with the underwire I keep getting messed up and losing my balance.

It's not so horrible that I'm falling all over the place but sometimes I stumble after throwing a hook or trying to slip punches with my partner. So is there anything I can do to change that or does it just come with practice?

And any other tips to help a beginner boxer like me would be greatly appreciated :D

ur 6ft 4". wats ur weight?
remember to bend ur knees and stand in a proper stance. wen u get a good stance, throw ur hooks slowly at the bag and work on technique, do it slow a couple times properly and speed up with every punch, in the end, ull be throwing fast shots without losing any balance

Nitepanther,

Your balance and technique will improve with practice, do not try to run before you can walk though.

Concentrate on your straight punches and footwork, then practice the defence of the same punches.

Once you have a hold on that your stance and balance will have improved and the more technical shots will become more fluid and you will feel the stability within your balance without really trying too hard!

Ask your coach to give you assistance and milk his knowledge.

Remember that there is no point being able to hook, uppercut etc if your footwork and basic shots and defences are poor, its a bit like being an excellent driver who cannot steer.

Good luck!

concentrate on jab and one two before learning hooks

otherwise youll get it all wrong fundamentally

in one session you should really work on stance and jab, maybe right

To the poster above...my weight is about 180. Thanks for the tips from the other posters :D. I'll keep at it and practice my 1-2's a bit more. I guess it's just kind of confusing at first (trying to take it all in at once: proper stance, punch, block and mixing it all up) but I'll get it soon enough.

Thanks for your help :boxing:
