i was just wondering who was taught the basics by a trainer or by themselves. ive been seeing ppl around here say dat u shud have a trainer b4 u attempy how to punch. I didnt go to a boxing gym until a year ago and i learnt all i know about boxing from fight films of all sorts when i was younger. the thing is that when i got to the gym, my trainer asked me if i was from another gym coz he told me i was throwing punches with good technique and i did all the **** right. just wondering if any1 else learnt most their **** from other stuff besides a trainer?

I use to know a guy who has a similar story to yours, I mean the guy never took Muay Thai lessons in his life, but you could tell he was a natural athlete 'cause he could pretty much mimic what he saw on T.V. and made one think that he'd been doin' it throughout his life, but I think those individuals are rare. I know I could never pull it off.

My Dad taught me the basics, he could have boxed but chose not too, but my Uncle did some boxing back in the late 70s and early 80s. Although a lot of the time I have no choice but to train by myself, don't mind, but I prefer to train with my Dad.

This is an excellent question.
I was a student of boxing long before I ever set foot in a gym.
I used to to watch Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, McGuigan etc on old betamax video's (they weren't old then of course) and tried to copy and practice punches and movement, I would spend hours going through moves and combinations and the possible outcomes of fights in my head.
When I eventually started boxing at 11, obviously my trainer taught me the basics and frowned upon me trying Tysons leaping left hooks or danicing aroung with my arms by my sides ala Ali or Sugar Ray but when he wasn't paying attention I carried on trying things and by the time I starting fighting I had a good understanding of the basic skills but I also had one or two shots that were not text book.
I had a good amateur career but due to various issues mainly a parachuting accident I stopped at 26, but continued as a coach.
I now encourage individuality and young fighters who come to the gym I coach at sometimes bring with them shots or moves either that their dad has given them or they have picked them up from watching fights on tape etc.
I then school them on the basics and try to let what talent they have come through!

i learned how to throw a good jab and a good straight when i was 12 from a kickboxing blackbelt, and learned other punches on my own from other boxers.
