Ok so I got this DVD Burner and what not. Lite-On.

My problem is that whenever I try and burn a DVD or VCD my computer locks up. It worked 1 time, but the other 20 times I have tried it my computer freezes.

Its not a problem with overheating or space. I just cant figure out what the problem is.

Im using Nero 6

what programs do you guys use and anyone got any tips?

.......My wife is the expert in that **** but I believe she used Nero too. She didn't get the ilegal but effective one that I told her to get. Even the best burners can't duplicate the original to perfection. Copies are much more prone to problems like locking up. It's a clone with imperfect DNA.

Got to be more specific with the problem man
specs dont mean anything as long as you meet the requirements.

I would try shutting down all the running programs you dont need and then trying.

Also if you have XP check the system logs for errors and see what happened.

Oh so meeting the requirements means you can ignore the specs? Not sure If I agree.

Also, before I think about a problem I like to know WHAT the person is running. Did they build it theirself? Did the burner come WITH the machine? Did they install the burner theirself? I dunno, I think THAT is pretty important.

isn't requirements the same as specs - only more detailed and technical in nature?

LuKahnLi

Requirements are what you need to have on your machine to use a product
Specs are what you actually have.

The two may or may not be the same.

you might be right, but in i.t. requirements are normally what your system or program needs to accomplish and specs is the blueprint how to get there.

I guess that is one definition of specs. I use them to mean specifications of the machine in question.

yeah requirements are what you need like you need a dollar for a coke
Specs are what you actually have in your system like having 2 dollars in your wallet.

The answer I gave you is complete and accurate assessment of what I know.

Do you mean, what OS's do I know?
What languages?

Yeah, I do read that stuff. I have lived PLENTY though.

For example, user reports his/her machine will not turn on. Technician asks if it is plugged in. They say yes. Technician Tries a couple other things, and it went nowhere. Technician goes to the user's room and finds that when the user said "it was plugged in, they WERE telling the truth." It turned out, the user had plugged their computer into a power strip. Then plugged the power strip's cable INTO ITSELF.

User was told "If this worked, then you would have solved the world's energy crisis."

I have actually had a user tell me that she doesn't know what a power cord is.

In such settings, you will find that 80% of the problems you will face fall into one of 3 categories. Spyware/Ad-Software, Viruses, or User error/PEBKAC.

I dont exactly know all the specifics my friend built this, he's the computer guy at ASU. I e-mailed him yesterday he aint got back to me yet, but when I bought it he said I shouldn;t have any trouble. I have WindowsXP and a Lite-On . This is the one I have http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-960&depa=1

I dont exactly know how much space I have. I added up all the space it said I had in my drives and got 112.GB.

I just burned a Family Guy episode. My thoughts are if it works fine now why doesn't it work fine all the time?

check your firmware/driver...it may not be the latest version and may contain bugs...check it on the manufacturer's website...they normally have the latest version with the bug fixes.you should update yours if it's the case. good luck.

I use Nero too. Do you have Adaptec software installed for burning CDs? I heard before that these two have problems when both are installed. Uninstall the adaptec sw.
All I can suggest is update the firmware/driver on your dvd writer.

256MB of RAM? IS that correct? That is FAR too little. You need at least twice that.

Good to know. Do you know any cheap memory I can get?

LuKahnLi

With RAM its not about cheap. You need to find the type of RAM chip that your motherboard supports.

LuKahnLi
01-04-2005, 04:57 PM
Whereever you got that system info should say what kind of RAM it is. It would look something like "256MB SDRAM".

It depends on the type of RAM it is.

after typing that again I just burned a MINOTAURO fight. Like I said sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't.

Shouldn't it just work all the time or not work at all?

No. Part of it depends on what you are burning. Also, what other processes are going on on your computer matter as well.

Your computer sucks :D
nah he is right win XP runs like a dog on anything less than 512 MBs ram
More than likely you have DDR RAM check your motherboard manual.
256 is quite cheap.
