View Full Version : The Most Intelligent Boxer
onikami 01-03-2005, 07:56 AM Boxers are not renowned for their intelligence. We all know that. But does anyone know any boxers with impressive intellect?
For me, Chris Eubank was one who, despite the lisp, was a rather intelligent chap.
Dark Destroyer 01-03-2005, 07:59 AM As far as boxing history goes and boxing in general Mike Tyson knows an unbelievable amount of stuff. Not all boxers do know lots about the past but he is one that does.

When Iron Mike is not talking about eating hearts and babies, in interviews he does show impressive knowledge and intellect. Must give him that.
Johnny_Rocket 01-03-2005, 08:13 AM Im impressed by the way he uses big words and understands them. What about the Kiltschkos. They're doctors and speak like 3 or 4 different languages
onikami 01-03-2005, 08:18 AM They can speak English, Ukranian, German and something else.
They can speak English, Ukranian, German and something else.
And Russian if im not mistaken, pluss doctor grade in sportsciense and proffessor grade in philosophy if ot mistaking again, i guess its pretty clear which boxers are the smartest.

Quite a few boxers are quite smart, and the ones that aren't are still taught a lot if they have the right trainers and managers. Cus made sure Tyson knew everything he needed to know about boxing history.
As for current fighters, Hopkins is a lot smarter than some people seem to give him credit for. Just cause he talks goofy people thinks he's dumb...fact it he's hilarious and a dumb guy could not be that funny. The Klitschkos are quite bright, as well, as some people have mentioned. A lot of the new young boxers, like Juan Diaz and Jeff Lacy, seem like intelligent guys.
james toney may be smart but i just dont get what he is sayin
BiggestBoxingFanEver 01-03-2005, 08:40 AM Most Intellectual - Gene Tunney
2nd place- Ali
neils7147933 01-03-2005, 10:53 AM DaVarryl Williamson holds a Master's Degree in business administration. His fight vs. Wladimir Klitschko was perhaps the only high-profile fight between two heavyweights with advanced college degrees.
Bombardier 01-03-2005, 11:03 AM Most Intellectual - Gene Tunney
2nd place- Ali
Good picks, though I might put Ali as number one. Still, Tunney sometimes does not get enough credit for his wins over Dempsey. People focus on Dempsey's time off, the long count, etc. People forget that Tunney studied Dempsey's style and determined the best ways to beat him.
I'd put Rocky Marciano and Larry Holmes high on the list as well if we're talking about all-time fighters. I could listen to Holmes talk about boxing all day, and the clips from Rocky's old show are terrific.
FibreOptic 01-03-2005, 11:31 AM james toney may be smart but i just dont get what he is sayin
Sometimes, I can't understand the babble that comes out of James Toney's mouth.
Chups 01-03-2005, 11:32 AM Marco Antonio Barrera = boxing smarts + lawyer. :)

Didn't Ali fail his military test and graduate at the bottom of his class? He even once said "I said I was the greatest, I didn't say I was the smartest."

MAB is a lawyer? I never knew that.

Pictures of boxers with books are few and far between....
pinaldino 01-03-2005, 12:20 PM MAB is a lawyer? I never knew that.
yes that's one of the so called reasons of rivalry between him and el terrible , who comes from a poor background...
Bombardier 01-03-2005, 12:21 PM Didn't Ali fail his military test and graduate at the bottom of his class? He even once said "I said I was the greatest, I didn't say I was the smartest."
Ali may not have had school smarts but there's no denying his brilliance in and outside the ring. His ring smarts are well documented, with perhaps the most notable display of brilliant strategy coming against Foreman. Outside the ring he has proven to be a master showman and an amazing speaker, as was able to build himself up into a world figure as much with his mouth and with his fists.
Not everyone is smart the same way. I probably wouldn't ask, say, Nelson Mandela to solve complex quantum physics problems, for example, but he's still a brilliant man.
2 interesting suggestions..
Lennox Lewis - smart for retiring when he did.
Tommy Morrison - smart for teaching the children about promiscuous lifestyles and AIDS, once he was infected.
Floydmayweather 01-03-2005, 01:47 PM I would have to say Ali he was the best and playing mind games and winning his fight before it happened. He is also sharp outside of the ring.
!! Anorak 01-03-2005, 01:48 PM Big Len may talk cack, but there's a brain in there.
What about Roy Jones jr.?
Didn't Ali fail his military test and graduate at the bottom of his class? He even once said "I said I was the greatest, I didn't say I was the smartest."

Ranger2408 01-03-2005, 03:32 PM Wasn't Azumah Nelson a bonafide professor?
Truth 01-03-2005, 03:34 PM Sugar Ray Leonard was a smart boxer and buiness man, besides the fact he never knew when to retire.

Chris Eubank is not intelligent he talks rubbish to make himself seem smart, he has that stupid monocle and drives a truck which he pays thousands monthly in parking tickets for.
Idiot

oldgringo 01-03-2005, 04:09 PM james toney is the only intelligent boxer

JT actually is a pretty nice, well spoken guy when you meet him outside of his tough guy boxing stuff. He babbles alot now though.
No wonder why TOS/Wlad sucked...a couple of ***** ass teachers fighting has never been an appealing fight.
tnf1400 01-03-2005, 04:41 PM ray leonord is smart. he got inside of durans head and made him quit.he studyed hagler for a while and found out every thing about him.
outofit 01-03-2005, 04:45 PM Ali is outstanding in my mind because he could change up any plan he would see what worked and what didn't and not be stuck in a rut like so many countless others we watch who won't even notice the guy they are fighting against has become a one handed fighter. RJJ seems to know whats going on at least in the ring in that same way. As far as intellectual i beleave there are many intelligent fighters so many in fact that the addage that you got to be stupid to want to fight for a living seems as out dated as women not being able to vote. I don't know what others will feel but i think also that george foreman is a very smart man at least wise.
JaNnO 01-03-2005, 05:40 PM And Russian if im not mistaken, pluss doctor grade in sportsciense and proffessor grade in philosophy if ot mistaking again, i guess its pretty clear which boxers are the smartest.
being good in books and in your subjects doesn't necessarily translate to being smart.

No, but its a good indicator.

Mr. Ryan 01-03-2005, 06:35 PM Maybe Vitali, who has a PHD in Phys. Ed. How about Barney Ross, I heard he was pretty smart.
Boxerdog 01-03-2005, 06:42 PM How about Barney Ross, I heard he was pretty smart.

You see, another old guy hating on The Sensation for flaunting his youth. Is somebody angry at The Sensation? It's because I'm black, isn't it?
Boxerdog 01-03-2005, 07:00 PM Please write and whine some more in your journal.
Your fuked up, sad excuse for a life makes me feel like Bill Gates in comparison. :D

Ooh, the old man still has something in the tank. What is it that pisses you off so much about The Sensational One? Are you simply a hater? Is that it? Or do you just love Liston so much that you would go to the grave defending his honor? Why don't you stop trying to prove your intellectual superiority over a 17 year old and pay some mortgage or whatever old people like you do.
Boxerdog 01-03-2005, 07:28 PM This is representative of your posting and cognitive skills.
I have NEVER apoken on behalf of Liston. Ever.
"The Sensational One"! What a laugh!
Make another "Keeping up with" thread...as if ANYBODY gives a fuk what is going on in your pitiful excuse for a life. Did you get that title out of "Teen Beat" magazine loser? :D

Nah, your girl calls me Asian Sensation. You "apoken" about Liston in the Ali fight fix thread recently, idiot. It seems that someone has been keeping up with The Sensation recently, as you seem to know alot about my posts and ****.
Boxerdog 01-03-2005, 07:37 PM Reduced to harping on a typo........sad.
Don't let it bother you though, Skippy. I have verbally beaten down grown men with I.Q.s in the triple digit range.
YOU never stood a chance! :D :D

Well, you can masturbate grown men all you want, it's none of my business. The truth is I'm so much smarter than you that you can kiss my ass. My IQ is in the triple digit range, and then some. The thing thats sad is that I'm smarter than you, would kick your ass, and you can suck my ****. That's the Triple Threat right there. :)
Boxerdog 01-03-2005, 07:43 PM Well I'll be danged! You ARE just 17!
That childish rant just proved it.
I'm done with you, Nancy.
You bore me!

gotta be levin... :D
Mr. Ryan 01-03-2005, 07:45 PM I'm a homosexual who performs sexual favors on men. I love Ricky Martin and arguing with 17 year olds. I have a tiny penis. You bore me!
OK, whatever man.
Mr. Ryan 01-03-2005, 07:48 PM I am still working on a phony self-appreciating sig like yours, dickless.
Ha Ha, I'm the most intelligent boxer!
{BrownBomber} 01-03-2005, 08:11 PM I would have to say these three Benard Hopkins,Juan Manuel Marquez and Oscar Delahoya. This is boxing wise.
LuKahnLi 01-03-2005, 08:13 PM Hopkins, Tszyu, Mayweather.....
kadyo 01-03-2005, 08:15 PM Oscar De La Hoya
Muhammad Ali
Sugar Ray Leonard
Nautilus 01-03-2005, 09:44 PM Without any order:
Vitaliy Klichko
Wladimir Klichko
Juan Diaz
Sharmba Mitchel
Kostya Tzyu
obaioghill 01-03-2005, 10:09 PM I think the question of what kind of intellegence we are talking about is key. I think really as far as smart boxers Ali and RJJ are up near the top - now that does not mean they would get the highest SAT score or they couold solve the most complicated math problem - I think they understood fighting more than others. They seemed to able to do the most with their intellect inside the square ring. As far as classic intelligence Tunney would have to be one of the top.
Salva TRU 01-03-2005, 10:16 PM James Toney is very crafty in the ring. Not so sure about intelligence outside of da ring.

isn't intellegence measured by IQ?
someone can tell you all there is to know about bass fishing and john boats, but still not have a lick of sense and have an IQ of 50.
so they are bass fishing and john boat SMART, but they are only but so INTELLEGENT.
Supafly25 01-04-2005, 08:11 AM in terms of general intelligence i would say Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Diaz. If were talking about knowledge in the industry of boxing i would go with De La Hoya.
