Marquez is Manny's toughest opponent
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

DURING his brief stay here in Davao City last November to train Manny Pacquiao, noted American trainer Freddie Roach was asked who among the three Mexican fighters--Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera--is the toughest foe for the Filipino ring warrior.

Without batting an eyelash, Roach shot back: "Juan Manuel Marquez."

Then a follow-up question was thrown: "Who is the easiest opponent among the three?"

Again, Roach came up with a ready answer: "Marco Antonio Barrera."

All those who have gathered around Roach at the oven-hot Davao City boxing gym while Pacquiao was shadowboxing atop the ring couldn't agree more.

The fact that the famous trainer came all the way here from Los Angeles, and against the advise of his friends, underscored Roach's determination and seriousness to train Pacquiao for Marquez, the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association featherweight champion.

Pacquiao was then training for his fight with Thai Fahsan 3K Battery of Thailand, whom he eventually crushed in just four rounds last December, but, as the Team Pacquiao declared, the pug was actually honing up his skills for Marquez.

"Marquez is an intelligent fighter. He is better than Barrera and Morales," Roach said.

The American went on to say that Barrera is the easiest target.

Pacquiao dealt Barrera a severe beating in November 2003 to become the People's Champion.

Barrera, however, was able to recover from that devastating defeat and dethrone Morales as World Boxing Council super featherweight titlist just recently.

Pacquiao decked Marquez three times in the first round but couldn't finished him off to settle for a bloody draw the first time they met in May.

Roach noted that Pacquiao relied too much on his left hand the first time around, the reason Marquez was able to survive the onslaught.

To beat Marquez, Roach said Pacquiao has to develop his right hook the next time around.

It was evident during the training here that Roach wants Pacquiao not only to unleash his right hook but also make it a devastating weapon in the Filipino pug's arsenal.

In between rounds during the sparring sessions, Roach would always remind Pacquiao to fire the right hook and applauds everytime his ward connects one.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Marquez in a rematch on February 26 in Las Vegas.

"We can knockout Marquez if Manny uses both fists," Roach said.

He will use both hands and a better jab in the fight but Marquez will be in the best shape of his life. I cant wait.

I think I agree with Roach. Boxingwise, JMM is more intelligent than MAB or Morales. This is evident in the fact that the two have been avoiding him like the plague! But his style also happens to be the most boring, the dullest and least exciting of the three!!

The sooner Pacman disposes of him the better for boxing!!

Ya good boy Manny! Wtf what kind of training is this?
Its gonna be a great fight! Manny has to develope a diff. style other wise he gonna lose. He can beat most fighters with just the left, but not Marquez.

don't take JMM so lightly, if Hurlex were here he'd kick your ass, or send Johnny Ruiz. JMM is a future all time great, you don't just " dispose " of someone as skilled as JMM

i guess we'll just need to wait and see if he beats pacman. i think he's light years away to be all time great...there are a lot of boxers out there who are far superior than jmm to grab that spot.

Coaches and trainors are much more brainy than most of us here, so if appreciating Manny's rights would do it, who are we to question?
If you're not satisfied with how Roach conducts his training, then you might as well wait for March 19th.

Style wise I believe Roach is telling the truth, JMM got to be Pac's hardest and and most dangerous opponent :( unfortunately the guy (JMM) doesn't have the balls to fight Pac again and put his titles at stakes. :p

Have i missed the Pac vs Morales fight? :D

How does Roach know who's tougher for Pac when he's not fought all 3? It could be a good guess but i wouldnt be supprised if Morales give him his toughest fight.

I think he meant stylewise, JMM isharder because he's a counterpuncher. EM would give him hell of a fight but Manny would have better luck connecting against him than Marquez.

Roach is a fighter himself before he became a trainer after retirement so he he should know how to analyze styles and fighters movements. He won't be a "TRAINER OF THE YEAR" for nothing. That means he knows what he is doing and saying because it shows on the results. Good guess? Nah . . .nah . . .nah . . . guesses won't give you results . . . analysis back up by facts does the job.

I think this is a wrong question...would you jump from a skyscraper yourself just to find out if it's not going to kill you?

yes, he meant style... among the three m's, marquez is the most effective counterpuncher so the attck style of pac is somehow giving marquez an easy counterpunching fight... anyway, roach won't become a tainer if he hasn't become a fighter, so he inderstands them well...
