Saddest story in boxing period. TheGreat1 10-02-2004, 02:44 AM Ali, he should have never got into the ring with Homles, or berbick. and Taylor. Holyfield is still pretty good, and could still take out a few in the top ten today. psychopath 10-02-2004, 05:42 AM Yes there are a lot of fighters hanging on out there for to looooong . . . include Grand Pa George Foreman in that list. puppy_dogg 10-02-2004, 05:55 AM whatever happend to this last comeback by foreman? i guess it fell through. i think him and holmes were supposed to fight. ****in joke. muay 10-02-2004, 07:31 AM Some fighters who in recent memory fought on long after their strength, speed and skills have left them. Ali - what a pitiful sight! being hammered by a young Larry Holmes Holmes - he should've just contented himself watching Mike Tyson and NOT fighting him! Holyfield - Toney wouldn't have a chance standing in front of the Real Deal Foreman - Tommy Morrison looked good against him, good thing he wasn't KO'd Duran neils7147933 10-02-2004, 08:18 AM i would make a poll but i dont feel like it so just post who u think is the boxer who held on 2 long, i have to say Roberto Duran honorable mentions holyfield and Hopkins If Hopkins had already retired, what would that have proven? He looks better than ever and he's making more money than ever. It's not like his skills aren't there or that he's getting hurt... techn9ne 10-02-2004, 09:46 AM JCC and RJJ Exciterx24 10-02-2004, 11:13 AM Duran was one of them. That fight against Joppy was a disaster. Joppy simply beat him up badly. The worst beating he got besides his fight with Hearns.I also get the feeling that Tyson is stayin' too long as well as Holyfield. Exciterx24 10-02-2004, 11:15 AM I forgot to mention Julio Cesar Chavez and now Miguel Angel Gonzalez. They both share a common executioner in Tzyu. MetalVomit 10-02-2004, 11:23 AM 1 word. Holyfield. He used to be my favorite boxer when i was growing up. to see him get destroyed by James Toney, was like finding out santa claus isnt real when you are 2 years old. man i almost cried. The Fix 10-02-2004, 12:42 PM how about riddick bowe it think the man is now retarted or has some kind of brain damage. others could be jcc or holyfield. cple 10-02-2004, 03:55 PM Most fighters hang on too long and there are too many to list. Some notable ones are Joe Louis, Roberto Duran, Evander Holyfield, and Jim Jeffries never should have come out of retirement to fight Jack Johson. Zhen 10-02-2004, 04:00 PM Holyfield and Meldrick Taylor. Add Bowe to this list too. SonnyG8R 10-02-2004, 04:19 PM Lots of fighters have hung around too long. Duran was one of the more glarring examples. He hung on for almost 12 years and 30 fights too long. :( Dynamite76 10-17-2004, 05:26 PM Duran Leonard Holmes Ali Hearns Roy Jones Jr Dokes Page(ultimate point of someone staying too long) Norton De La Hoya MetalVomit 10-17-2004, 06:10 PM Ali, he should have never got into the ring with Homles, or berbick. and Taylor. Holyfield is still pretty good, and could still take out a few in the top ten today. but will it be worth Holy taking out a couple contenders if he cant speak back to his grandkids and has to communicate like Steven Hawking? Silverfox 10-18-2004, 12:48 AM De La Hoya is already 3 to 4 fights past the 'overdue' date. His ego is going to cause irreparable damage. Marciano was a shrewd dude! One of a handful of guys still left with a brain! Mickey Ward made his due dollars and got out as well....As did Brian Mitchell. techn9ne 10-18-2004, 01:18 AM chris byrd... sorry but its time to hang up the gloves THRILLAinmanila 10-18-2004, 04:19 AM chris byrd... sorry but its time to hang up the gloves Roberto Duran should have called it quits after Hearns Current ones who should hang up the gloves for good: DLH Mayorga Freitas Palma 10-18-2004, 09:58 AM Chavez held on too long Holyfield needs to get out before he ends up like Ali Levitating 10-18-2004, 11:14 AM Roberto Duran should have called it quits after Hearns Current ones who should hang up the gloves for good: DLH Mayorga Freitas No way do I think that DLH,Mayorga and Freitas are in the same list as Ali,Hearns and the rest. They still have something to offer. Picking the guys who got out at the right time would be easier as there are so few.Guys like Michael Spinks, Hagler, Tunney, Marciano,Lennox Lewis (close call though), Ricardo Lopez. Roy Jones hung around too long but I dont blame him. He looked so good against Ruiz that he looked like he still had another couple of years left in him. Ray Leonard hung around way too long. Obviously should have retired after Hagler fight or at least after the Lalonde fight.Too many others to mention. bigdlb12 10-18-2004, 11:35 AM Julio Cesar Chavez, should have stop after that Draw vs Whitaker JOM'S 10-18-2004, 12:15 PM Lot of names to mention but I think ALI is the Model for guys not to stay & fight too long, who knows if he did not fought Holmes & Trevor he could still be flying like a butterfly..... abdiel2k3 10-18-2004, 12:20 PM Roberto Duran should have called it quits after Hearns Current ones who should hang up the gloves for good: DLH Mayorga Freitas wtf? only one that makes sense is mayo and dats becuase he has decided to hang them up DLH and Frietas? becuz of their one and only knockout loss? dont forget that oscar was facen a bigger stronger guy frietas can go back to beaten up bumbs but those last loses dont put them on the they should call it quits list MetalVomit 10-18-2004, 06:54 PM i would make a poll but i dont feel like it so just post who u think is the boxer who held on 2 long, i have to say Roberto Duran honorable mentions holyfield and Hopkins do you mean bernard hopkins? i wouldnt call beating everyone that challenges him including Tito and Oscar(even though DLH is incapable of being in top shape at middleweight) holding on, i call that domination. thats like telling Michael Jordan to retire after his forth championship. SonnyG8R 10-19-2004, 12:26 AM I don't think it's fair to say Bernard Hopkins hung around too long. Dark Destroyer 10-19-2004, 06:17 AM Muhammed Ali is the most obvious example from boxing history who hung around by his own choice. Fighters like Joe Louis and Mike Tyson are examples of fighters who should have stayed out but got forced back into the sport because of money problems which is even sadder. Although Joe Louis's reasonings were far more unfortunate than Mikes. Mr. Ryan 10-19-2004, 11:55 AM I would say Holyfield, Whitaker, Tommy Hearns, Meldrick Taylor, and Alexis Arguello. |
