View Full Version : Is Muhammad Ali ta Greatest Boxer Foeva?
Manny_P 11-22-2005, 02:02 PM jest a simple question.
Are we all on ta same page if we say Muhammad Ali is ta greatest fighta that was born?
Opinion?
!! Anorak 11-22-2005, 02:05 PM Maybe Sugar Ray more.
SugaShane 11-22-2005, 02:05 PM Wladimir Klitschko.
jabsRstiff 11-22-2005, 02:07 PM Robinson & Armstrong were the greatest ever.
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 02:08 PM Robinson & Armstrong were the greatest ever.
Correction, "Robinson n Armstrong were ta greatest ever."
but definately..
Robinson was the greatest, Armstrong was great too..
Funny how Robinson stepped in the ring with 2 of the greatest fighters(after him), Willie Pepp and Armstrong and beat them both..
Armstrong fought SRR when he was past his prime and SRR took it easy on him because Armstrong was his idol, Armstrong afterwards said, even if he was in his prime that he would lose to SRR
Hitman932 11-22-2005, 02:09 PM ali was the greatest just by the simple fact that he is considered so great despite losing the best years of his career for draft evasion.
also look at how good he was and he was only 205-210 pounds. imagine if muhammad ali wouldve fought at cruiserweight. he coulda been 250-0.
Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest fighter that ever lived. There is no disputing that.
Ali, Armstrong, and Louis all make the case for top 5 all time definitely, but they were by no means better than him.
Manny_P 11-22-2005, 02:12 PM are you guys sayin that Muhammad Ali is ovarated?
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 02:13 PM are you guys sayin that Muhammad Ali is ovarated?
Uhhh......lol...............ya
he was great but the greatest?
NO!
Ali, Robinson and Louis ;)
!! Anorak 11-22-2005, 02:14 PM are you guys sayin that Muhammad Ali is ovarated?
I'd argue his case for a top three placing, definitely. I'd argue his place for greatest heavy. But Robinson was better.
Manny_P 11-22-2005, 02:14 PM bu that's ta perception of ta public. They see Ali as ta greatest boxer of all time even fo centuries to come.
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 02:16 PM bu that's ta perception of ta public. They see Ali as ta greatest boxer of all time even fo centuries to come.
EXACTLY!
He is the MOST overrated in the public.
Manny_P 11-22-2005, 02:17 PM EXACTLY!

you are kidding me. How is Ali ovarated?
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 02:22 PM you are kidding me. How is Ali ovarated?
He is a all time great..
but people that don't know boxing, all think ALI is the greatest fighter by a wide margin....
THE REAL NINJA 11-22-2005, 02:23 PM srr ali louis and armstrong are all great but i dont see them as far ahead of the rest as most do
PessimisticPug 11-22-2005, 02:26 PM I dont believe that Ali was the greatest of all time, I would also go with Robinson.
A boxers greatness seems to be directly impacted by how the public percieved him. He may not have been the slickest in the ring or the hardest puncher, but he could still find greatness in the general public. Afterall, it is the general public who we must sell the fights and the fighters to, so their opinions would have to count. Was Ali bigger than Joe Louis, I do not think so. Louis was the first black heavyweight champion since Jack Johnson and played the role perfectly incontext of his times (This is a whole story in its self). He defended his title over 20 times and went out and put a huge dent in Hitlers war machine by dropping Schmeling hard. Louis was and is an american hero. Bigger than Ali in my opinion.
Rockin' :boxing:
Mike Tyson agrees with me in that Johnny Tapia is arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time also.
He stated that publicly.
The hardships he had to endure, and his overcoming odds to achieve greatness speaks volumes.
Oh yeah and this just in:
His victory over Romero was arguably the greatest feat I have ever witnessed as well as one of the greatest fights of all time.

Mike Tyson knows his boxing very well.
Manny_P 11-22-2005, 02:33 PM so if Ali aint ta greatest and is ovarated, WHAT MADE HIM GREAT? You mean ta "trash talking" and "selling himself to public" is ta only thing tis guy was good fo? I KNOW HE HAD GREAT COMP ON HIS RESUME. I woulnt call Ali ovarated.

Yes, the trash talking, and him calling himself the greatest, and him being muslim and going to Africa...
He was a big trashtalker n ****..
He was a great fighter, but overrated.
TuPrincipe 11-22-2005, 02:38 PM Johnny Tapia has overcome tragedy after tragedy and He still kept coming back.
He deserves all of the recognition that He gets because He was a great person, and a great fighter.
I heard one time when He was younger a bus he was riding in went off a cliff, killing a number of passengers but leaving Tapia with only a concussion.
If this isn't enough to make you believe in guardian angels and such, then I don't know what is.

He was a great fighter, but overrated.
ali is the greatest for five reasons.
1) in his prime he was unhittable, to any body who ever fought.
2) he continued to win after the gov't took alot of his speed away from him.
3) he fought and beat better fighters than anybody who ever fought.
4) he was on the winning side of two of the biggest upsets in boxing history, if not sports history in liston-clay I in 1964, and ali-foreman in 1974.
5) he was his own promoter and was able to make more money year for year for himself and his opponents than any other boxer who ever lived, and has done more for sports than anyone period. he is the sole reason why boxers are paid so much today.
TuPrincipe 11-22-2005, 03:44 PM Liston fights were a farce.
Bozo_no no 11-22-2005, 03:45 PM Liston fights were a farce.
That was no fault of Ali's.
TuPrincipe 11-22-2005, 03:47 PM That was no fault of Ali's.
Yes but you can't hold his wins against Liston to be truly valid. The Mafia was out to get Liston, so who knows what the result could of been.
Super_Lightweight 11-22-2005, 03:47 PM Ali lost or deserved to lose to Doug Jones, Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, and would lose 9 outta 10 to George Foreman. His performances in the ring do not warrant him being the greatest fighter ever. That should go to Robinson.
Bozo_no no 11-22-2005, 03:51 PM Yes but you can't hold his wins against Liston to be truly valid. The Mafia was out to get Liston, so who knows what the result could of been.
You don't know that.
The 1st fight was a very credible victory, because Liston choose to quit after his corner's cheating didn't work, and he knew he was in for an embarassment.
In the 2nd fight, who knows why he stayed down when he did.
If Ali wasn't the fighter he was, he would have been stopped in the 1st fight.
It was a big win for him (at that age) and for his career.
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 03:55 PM Ali was great, but Joe Louis would expose him of his unorthodox techniques and KO him..
Sort of like Hamed-Barrera, except with a KO...

This is the worst post I've read in weeks.

thats to broad of a statement
as an enlightened boxing fan
i know call him
the greatest Heaveyweight of all time
Brockton Lip 11-22-2005, 03:58 PM I believe Ali to be the greatest of all time. p4p, I don't know, maybe Robinson.

i do not see anyone including louis beating a prime ali. ali was too fast, too big, had too much reach, and oh, maybe i forgot, WAS TOO FAST! louis would look like the fool ali made liston look like!
Tha Greatest 11-22-2005, 04:00 PM i do not see anyone including louis beating a prime ali. ali was too fast, too big, had too much reach, and oh, maybe i forgot, WAS TOO FAST! louis would look like the fool ali made liston look like!
Louis is 10 times more skilled than Liston is bro..
Joe Louis is the most skilled offensive/puncher I've ever seen..
Bozo_no no 11-22-2005, 04:03 PM I am not taking anything away from Louis,
but it's a stretch to say he'd do to Ali what Barrera did to Hamed and speak about it like you think it's a fact.
Louis never fought anyone near what Ali would bring to the table.
No way can anyone say with certianty Louis would have beat Ali.
That would have been a very tough fight for Louis, who would have been at a substantial size and reach disadvantage in addition to the speed and reflex.
Dempsey 1919 11-22-2005, 04:15 PM Louis is 10 times more skilled than Liston is bro..
Joe Louis is the most skilled offensive/puncher I've ever seen..
oh, so louis is more skilled as a puncher than ali, when ali has the fastest jab in history! he is more skilled as a puncher than holmes or tyson, i don't think so!
speed_devil 11-22-2005, 05:36 PM I would probably say that he is…and was the best
Heckler 11-22-2005, 07:08 PM Look Ali was the greatest heavyweight of all time... What i mean when i say that is NO fighter ever could beat the man in his prime 3 times out of 5. Marciano, too slow, too crude but a tough fight... Joe Louis... He'd struggle with Ali's unorthodox style, Mediocre shuffling footwork wouldn't allow him to cut Ali off, he drops his left often and Ali would be able to fire his right cross... Tough fight but again Ali would win..... But he wasn't invincible.

i agree with just some aspects of that :D
AintGottaClue 11-22-2005, 08:16 PM yes, ali is the greatest, anyone who thinks rocky M can beat him is stupid
