Lacy calls Calzaghe a 'slapper'
Jeff Lacy has turned up the heat ahead of next year's super middleweight unification bout with Joe Calzaghe.
The IBF champion says WBO king Calzaghe has a weakness in his punching style.
"He thinks he's a puncher, I don't see that," Lacy told BBC Sport. "He hits with his hands open, slaps with certain punches, and throws winging shots."
The 'slapping' accusation has dogged Calzaghe throughout his career, but he has stopped 31 of his 40 opponents in an undefeated, 12-year career as a pro.
The last man to use the insult before a major fight was Byron Mitchell in 2003, and the effect was to fire up WBO champion Calzaghe in a quite spectacular manner.
Styles make fights and one of us is going to get exposed
Jeff Lacy
In one of the most thrilling fights of his eight-year reign, the Welshman tore into Mitchell, but walked onto a big punch and was put on the canvas for the first time in his career.
He got up and immediately launched another ferocious attack, stopping Mitchell in the second round of a memorable slug-fest.
The Lacy bout is set for Cardiff in early 2006, with 4 February or 4 March the most likely dates.
Before the slapper comments, Calzaghe has shown a healthy respect for Lacy and welcomed a fight he sees as one of the biggest in his career.
Despite his views on punching, Florida-born Lacy was also keen to stress his acknowledgement of Calzaghe's record and ability.
"I give him credit for his 17 defences, but this is going to be his toughest," said 28-year-old Lacy, who is undefeated in 22 fights (17 KOs).
"We're the two best in this division and it's the sort of fight everyone wants, to determine the undisputed best at super middleweight.
"Styles make fights and one of us is going to get exposed, we'll find out who on the night.
Everyone knows my style, I'm coming to fight
Jeff Lacy
"It's the UK versus the US - the best super middleweight has been your side of the Atlantic for a long time and US fans want that put right.
"I wouldn't be travelling overseas if I wasn't confident, I'm happy to fight as the underdog on Welsh soil."
With the usually supreme Calzaghe showing signs of deterioration in recent years and Lacy impressing against the likes of Robin Reid and Scott Pemberton, the fight has become a real 50-50 call.
Should the 'slapper' insult again get to the Welshman, he will need to beware of walking on to the favourite shot of the heavy handed 'Left Hook' Lacy.
"Everyone knows my style, I'm coming to fight," said the American.
*Jeff Lacy was speaking to BBC Radio Wales' The Back Page programme, which has a regular slot on Saturdays, 0830-0900 BST

!! Anorak 11-20-2005, 02:28 PM When I first read this I thought Lacy meant he was a woman who shagged loads of different blokes. Do you have that slang term in the US? Calzaghe hits back "Yeah? Well he's a dirty slag, boyo."
elveiel 11-20-2005, 02:30 PM its actually true thou..calzaghe does throw many of his punches as slaps..they still powerful.
Yeah, They look a bit like slaps but they are really effective.
I dont understand why lacy would moan about his opponents technique, his shots are so wide.....

pwned
pwned
pwned!!!!!
Bozo_no no 11-20-2005, 02:31 PM Mitchell fought horrid in that 2nd round. He dropped Calzage hard, and then went after him with his chin sticking striaght out, throwing wide windmill punches with his arms flailing out from his side. It was pathetic really.
Suggesting that's what will happen to Lacy is ignorant.
Lacy isn't going to fight that stupid.
oldgringo 11-20-2005, 02:32 PM Lacy throws wide shots too, but he's much better with those clubbing hooks than Calzaghe is (for example Pemberton KO).
Lacy is much better than Byron Mitchell, lets not kid oursleves here people. Mitchell was a strong opponent, and he was certainly up for that fight, but Lacy is a different animal. I can see Lacy just punching through a lot of what Calzaghe hit Mitchell with.
If Calzaghe is going to win this fight he's going to have to use those quick hands and move out before he takes too much return fire. Joe has a pretty solid chin, but Lacy can overwhelm you REALLY fast.
Lacy TKO9 Calzaghe after wearing him down with power shots upstairs and down.
restless_438 11-20-2005, 03:14 PM i know, whats funny is, mitchell sed a similar thing. cant wait to see lacy dropped and cant wait to see american fans cry
OMG LMFAO for real!!!! I don't know whats funnier, that last comment or comparing Sharmba Mitchell to Jeff Lacy.

Byron Mitchell, not Sharmba Mitchell
restless_438 11-20-2005, 03:18 PM Byron Mitchell, not Sharmba Mitchell
oh... :o i guess that makes a little more sense.. anyway, can't wait for this fight, should be great.

!! Anorak 11-20-2005, 04:53 PM Chill out, gang. Chill with the still. That's what happens sometimes... you get so much anti-Brit crap going around (not from anyone in this thread... well, apart from one example) that sooner or later someone's gonna kick off in retaliation. That's how wars start, right? Well, that and George Bush wanting some more oil for his rooster truck.
Anyway, I'm a citizen of the world telling you all to chill with the still and leave race out of it. And don't even think about giving me any of that half-assed "it's not race, it's nationalism" bull**** either. I don't wanna hear it.
Now who's comparing Barry McGuigan to Jack Johnson?

i wouldn't have known it came from somewhere else, that cat rules, tho...here's the choppers story:
my buddies dad served in the british navy in hong kong in the 1950's ( yeah, he's old -73 i, think ), anyway, one night me and my buddy are on his computer on this site called hot or not, he was looking for some fine birds to hook up with. we kept hitting all these birds with lots of tattoos ( i like that, he doesn't ) who all said they like choppers. so i'm laughing, and talking about choppers ( didn't know what it means in england, yet, but very soon to find out )...anyways, his dad comes down stairs and hears me saying " these girls like choppers " and he laughs and says " all girls like choppers....it means something a lot different where i'm from ". so i just looked at him, not knowing what he meant, and i asked " daddy, what's a chopper?"
AND HE GRABBED HIS TWIG AND BERRIES AND SAID "this." ****, man, i was laughing so hard, my buddy was horrified to see his dad doing that but that's one of my favorite stories ever, now everytime i see a orange county CHOPPERS t shirt, that's what i think of
Manny_P 11-20-2005, 05:27 PM Clazaghe slaps his opponents. Ive seen him. Vitali's jab is also a *****slap.
!! Anorak 11-20-2005, 05:28 PM ****, there's a sports team named after 'em as well? :D
It's not too commonly used anymore, but still enough to get a laugh. "Fanny" and "***" are the big two cross-overs. I always remember that Sidney Poitier film They Call Me Mister Tibbs! "It does your kids good for them to see you pat your wife on the fanny."
!! Anorak 11-20-2005, 05:29 PM Clazaghe slaps his opponents. Ive seen him. Vitali's jab is also a *****slap.
Thanks for ta insight Manny.

RichCCFC 02-14-2008, 05:46 PM I'd Just like to bump these two threads, they both got beaten by a slapper after all.
hardmanbrit 03-25-2008, 07:29 PM Not bad for a mere "slapper"!
xfiles 03-25-2008, 07:45 PM It was true then and it's true now. Lacy just wasn't good enough to capitalize. So what?
Crazylegs77 03-25-2008, 07:47 PM Damn Lacy should not be commenting on Calzaghe haha as if he remembers anything about that night..
Mozza 03-25-2008, 08:02 PM It was true then and it's true now. Lacy just wasn't good enough to capitalize. So what?
Is Hopkins good enough to capitalise? Who is good enough to capitalise?
hardmanbrit 03-25-2008, 08:30 PM Kessler.
:ugh:
Jim Jeffries 03-25-2008, 08:33 PM Lacy really looked like he had Calzaghe figured out. What did he win, 1 round?
xfiles 03-25-2008, 09:22 PM Is Hopkins good enough to capitalise? Who is good enough to capitalise?
Yeah, That's right. And that flag in your avatar would make great toilet paper for the next time I take a HUGE, steamy, ****!
Lacy really looked like he had Calzaghe figured out. What did he win, 1 round?
he only won the round where calzaghe lost a point for pushing lacy i think or hitting him behind the head.
Mozza 03-25-2008, 10:04 PM Yeah, That's right. And that flag in your avatar would make great toilet paper for the next time I take a HUGE, steamy, ****!
You can use the flag for toilet paper, just don't boo the national anthem.

Man, this kid talks a lot like Taylor! I thought Lacy was from Tampa and Taylor was from Arkinsaw?
Maybe it's just the American accent.
Chunk. 03-25-2008, 10:36 PM Jeff Lacy deserves credit for being one of the few American fighters who was willing to go to the UK and fight Joe, unlike his yank counterparts who are scared of doing so!
mt102879 03-26-2008, 12:05 AM Man, this kid talks a lot like Taylor! I thought Lacy was from Tampa and Taylor was from Arkinsaw?
Lacy is from Florida and Taylor is from Arkansas, both in the South and they each have a southern accent as well though Taylor's is probably more prominent.
I thought Annie was the only person who needed to get laid? lol.
Quit ****ing bumping threads regarding predictions about a fight that happened 3 years ago. You're an idiot if you do it for reasons other than............I accidentally left the web page in the cash and haven't formatted in years.
GooGoo 03-26-2008, 12:45 AM I'd Just like to bump these two threads, they both got beaten by a slapper after all.

Motofan 03-26-2008, 02:00 AM If Joe C slaps, then that was the worst *****-slap beatdown of all time.
If Joe C slaps, then that was the worst *****-slap beatdown of all time.
Indeed.
He doesn't really slap. In his flurries he throws a ****load of punches, many of them fast and not so heavy, but mixes in heavier shots with every 4 or 5 that he throws. It works well for him. It confuses the opposition, and they don't know when the heavier blows are coming, plus they are often from unexpected angles.
aussieboxer2320 03-26-2008, 02:44 AM yeah well that slapper ****ed him up
zapata 03-26-2008, 03:44 AM he sure slaped an ass whipping on lacy-i dont think jeff wants to be slapped silly again-my advice jeff-find some one else to fight or get slapped silly
hardmanbrit 03-26-2008, 10:14 PM Lacy was actually a very good fighter.
I was glad that he was a World Champion.
However, he really went down in my estimation after these absurd comments.
hardmanbrit 04-19-2008, 09:46 AM Hopkins has said exactly the same.
I wonder if the outcome of the fight will be the same!
Of course Joe is not able to throw really hard punches like he used to be able to many years ago, due to his terrible hand condition, but to disrespect him in such a manner is just silly and asking for trouble.
Joe's left hook 12-10-2008, 05:16 PM Lacy is right, to be fair.
Due to Calzaghe's cripplingly painful hand problems he cannot punch his own weight.
PaiidINFULLent. 12-10-2008, 05:39 PM He damn sure slapped Lacy ass all over the ring. Lacy is a good dude, but he needs to take his L in pride. Its nothing wrong with losing to one of the greatest super middleweights in boxing history.
larryx 12-10-2008, 05:40 PM why bump this?????
