Ignacio Beristain, the veteran manager of WBA and IBF Featherweight Champion Juan Manuel Marquez is warning that the much anticipated re-match between his fighter and Manny Pacquiao will be in serious jeopardy unless Top Rank starts to get a lot more realistic about the purse money on offer.

Beristain dropped the bombshell during a rigorous workout by Juan Manuel at the Gilberto Roman gym in Mexico City. Juan has been training since November and brushed aside the festive season holidays, even coming to the gym on Christmas Day!

Beristain is also single minded focused, but currently on the financial, rather than the physical aspect of the pending mega fight. He confided: “There are a lot of difficulties not just a few in the negotiations for Juan Manuel’s purse. Bob Arum’s son (Todd Du Boef) and Fernando Beltran are proving a bit difficult. I hope that by mid January, but no longer, we should have a deal concluded but if not I don’t think there’s going to be a fight.” [details (http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=454)]

Well win or lose...it's gonna be JMM's last big paycheck. WTF?? Did I say that??...if he wins...a fight with Barrera would also be multi-million...but wait....Barrera doesn't want a piece of JMM...LOL :) :)

No more excuses, just fight!JMM tasted that power in the first fight and figures he should get paid top dollar to possibly lose his title to Pacquaio whom has become one of the most feared fighters in the division...

True also but I dont think any of the 3 m's are scared.I don't think they are scared, but everyone in the boxing world has witnessed what happens when pacman lands a clean straight left. Look what pacman did to barrera in one fight compared to what morales, whom is on the P4P couldn't do to barrerra in 3 fights...

I think Barrera was 10x more prepared to fight Morales cause he hates him so much. No doubt that Pac has the hardest left in boxing p4p. The rematch would be something I would not miss. I think Barrera would make it better fight but Pac wins again this time a close fight if not a classic. I think Marquez and Morales can beat Pac cause they both know how to box especially Marquez. Pac still has that punchers chance though. :D

Beristain must be realistic. Murad/HBO was only dangling 900K to Pac for this fight and the guy was asking 1.5mill. Yeah he is the champion, but a JMM fight without Pacman will not generate the kind of moolah he is asking. In other words, it's Pacman who makes this rematch a wanna-see fight. So if JMM camp is asking for that amount of money, I don't see any reason why Pacman should receive less.

JMM is not on the right position to demand such thing . . he hasnt proven anything yet . . . that he can beat PAC . . . clearly what he has proven on the recent fight . . . that by boxing out PAC gives him an extra 10 rounds to survive the match and earned him a questionable draw . .

JMM felt that by not losing to pac recenly . . put him in a position to demand anything . . . thats way too much . . . atleast for now . . unless he fight the man and beat the man . . .

Bro, pacman already signed for this fight worth 900k after being armtwisted by murad and nazario. Beristain is asking moolah from Arum so whaever their game would be won't have any effect on the 2 fight contract signed by manny with the wily MM. I totally agree with you that pacman is the main attraction of this fight, hence must ideally receive more money. Damn this greedy promoters!!!

Marquez wants $1.5M to fight Pacquiao

THE MANAGER of WBA and IBF featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez has threatened to pull out of talks regarding the megafight against Filipino Manny Pacquiao on Feb. 26 if and when Marquez is not given a fair share of the purses.

Ignacio Beristain, the man credited for Marquez's continued rise to superstardom, has warned that the much anticipated rematch will never materialize "unless Top Rank starts to get a lot more realistic about the purse money on offer," said a report by James Blears over at the Boxingscene website.

Beristain made these statements during a rigorous workout by Marquez at the Gilberto Roman Gym in Mexico City. Reportedly, Marquez has been training since November and even kept a spartan lifestyle during Christmas Day, training and working out at the gym while people enjoyed the festivities.

"There are a lot of difficulties, not just a few in the negotiations for Juan Manuel's purse," said Beristain. "Bob Arum's son (Todd Du Boef) and Fernando Beltran are proving a bit difficult. I hope that by mid-January, we should have a deal concluded but if not I don't think there's going to be a fight."
The manager explained that the contentious point lies not with Du Boef who he has yet to meet, but Fernando Beltran who he claims is offering "a ridiculous amount. Half as much as my fighter wants," said Beristain. "We want more because Juan Manuel is the champion. I consider this to be an abuse. We want money not peanuts."

"We want a minimum of 1.5 million dollars, and they're offering about half of that," Beristain cited, when asked what was being put on the table.

"We want this fight to go ahead. Juan has been working exceptionally hard in the preparation. And we want to show the fans Juan's class as a fighter, in order to gain access to better paydays."

good point babylon, might as well get paid top dollar if he's going to get mauled the whole night and lose those two belts.

More impossible money is the only way out for Marquez. He knows he's gonna sleep in this fight. Why not ask for $10M?

HBO might just give the $1.5M purse so Pacman can rearrange JMM's nose again!!!!

MARQUEZ STEPS UP ON PURSE DEMAND
By Salven L. Lagumbay

Still seething at the thought of getting yet another small slice of the pie, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation featherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez yesterday renewed his diatribe at the promoters of the fight, saying that the i's wont be dotted and the t's will never be crossed unless and until his purse demand is met.

Marquez, speaking through his manager-trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain during a lull in training at the Gilberto Roman Gym in Mexico City, informed once again that until now, they have not yet signed to fight Pacquiao on February 26, and will not do so until Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and his Mexican contact Fernando Beltran give them what is due a dual champion.

"Yo estoy dispuesto a pelear en desempate con Pacquiao, pero ese pleito solamente se hará si la oferta mejora" (I am scheduled to face Pacquiao once again, but that fight can only happen if the purse offer is revised), said Marquez yesterday.

Reportedly, Arum and Beltran are putting up $750,000 for Marquez, while the Filipino southpaw will be getting $900,000 in their second meeting set on February 26 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

However, Marquez and Beristain had earlier revealed that they want $1.5 Million, as they think that the Mexican warrior deserves better pay as he holds the two belts that will be put on the line.

Beristain had earlier informed that if a deal is not reached by mid-January, the fight will not push through. The manager had informed that Top Rank's Todd Du Boef, the stepson of Arum, and Fernando Beltran are proving to be 'difficult' on the negotiating table.

Meanwhile, American promoter Murad Muhammad took a swipe at Marquez and Beltran, telling the duo that Pacquiao is the draw and not Marquez, hence they should be grateful to what is being offered, which is still much bigger compared to the purse which Marquez received in his first fight with Pacquiao and in his last bout against Orlando Salido.
