Mike Tyson Talks of Retiring
By Mitch Abramson (December 27, 2004)
-----------------------------------------------------------------Mike Tyson was at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, not to train, but to complete community service stemming from a fight he was involved in last year. Looking fleshy and relaxed, Tyson slipped on a pair of training mitts and offered a group of kids a short lesson in throwing and ducking punches, something his career has taken plenty of recently.

After he satisfied his last autograph seeker, of which there were hundreds, Tyson sat down for an impromptu press conference and confirmed his loyalists’ worse fears, rattling off a grocery list of Tysonisms that showed he was in top form, not physically but mentally: He admitted to snubbing his therapy sessions to rehab his recently operated knee, which he tore in a knockout loss to Danny Williams on July 30.

“I haven’t been to therapy in more than a few months,” he said.

Although he is cautiously scheduled to fight in March, Tyson shot down that rumor by confessing, in a statement that would be startling coming from anyone else that he may never fight again.

”I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m saying to myself, ‘what’s all of this stuff for?’” he said. “I don’t want to do it.”

Warming to the subject, when a reporter asked him what he might miss of boxing if he left the sport for good, Tyson replied, “nothing,” and used an expletive to show his disdain.

“Sometimes I train and sometimes I don’t,” he went on. “I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m trying to eat.”

His need to pay off his famously incurred debts might drive him back into the ring. He made nearly $400 million during his career, yet filed for bankruptcy last year.

Enormously popular, Tyson has always been a magnet for trouble.

Earlier this year, Tyson pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct from a brawl in a Brooklyn hotel lobby. Gleason’s owner Bruce Silverglade suggested to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes that part of Tyson’s sentencing is spent teaching kids to box, and Tyson was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, which he satisfied in Arizona, where he now lives, and at Gleason’s.

This past November, Tyson was arrested when a man accused him of jumping onto the hood of his car in the parking lot of an Arizona nightclub.

It’s this reporter’s opinion that Tyson should never fight again. It’s obvious his love of the sport has been replaced by an indifference and contempt that is astonishing given Tyson’s credentials. Yes, a well-conditioned, healthy Tyson would probably whip some of today’s premier heavyweights, but it’s clear that Tyson is not serious about the sport anymore, a shame since he has more charisma and talent in one of his fingers than practically the whole division.

In his current state, John Ruiz would beat him. With all due respect to Ruiz, what does that tell you?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
First and foremost, John Ruiz would be ko'ed in 5 or 6 rounds by this Tyson. Two or 3 by a prime Tyson, so this guy is an idiot. Second, Tyson does need to retire, I don't want to see him get hit anymore. He's been a superficial black mark to boxing, but also the savior to boxing over his career and I think he should get out before the ring martyrs him. This may sound stupid, but I want to see him as an announcer on Showtime. I think Steve Farhood, Mike Tyson, and Al Bernstein would be an ideal team. I remember Tyson calling a fight between Simon Brown and Vincent Pettway, and I thought he did a great job. This would give him a 6 digit income and would fill the void left by Czyz' drinking problem. Plus, everyone loves Tyson for some reason.

I read this yesterday. pretty good and bad news. i just hope his life is stress free from now on. what is disapointing most is his style. if he retires from the ring completely, hopefully his peekaboo style doesn't. i hope tyson starts a career teaching whether volunteer, videos, or just at a gym. i still think he's has knowledge and talent that he can pass down to future generations.

that kind of surprises me but I guess Tyson has lost much of his love to get in the ring and compete. I really hate to hear it because I would still would love to see Tyson give it one last charge at the lousy heavyweight divison.

He should call it quits after losing to a tomato can like williams

I love Tyson, but I wouldn't put money on him against Ruiz.

I hope he keeps fighting. Even fighting second-tier, Sunday Night Fight caliber fighters on an America's Fight Night a couple times a year would give Iron Mike a better income than he could probably earn doing any other legitimate work.

He can KO Danny williams 4 out of every 5 times they fight. That just wasn't his night.

Maybe, if he fought more (let those be second-tier fighters), he would have become hungry again and proceeded to get one final title shot.

Realy????

Cant people just understand that his spent he is not what he used to be.And he wont be again.

The main problem isent his age, it is his lack of interest.
It doesent seem like he realy wants to box.

If he truly wanted it id put my money on him beatin Brewster and Ruiz.

If Tyson doesn't fight for a living anymore, what is he gonna do? He is in major debt(I think 30 million + interest) and I don't see him doing anything else but coming back and fighting. I mean what else could Mike do to earn a living? What Mike needs to do is get his act together and fight maybe 10-15 more times in his career hopefully getting a title shot, paying back his debt, and saving some money for retirement. If he chooses this course of action he could be debt free and retired rich when he's 45. :(

Maybe the reason why he's not into it anymore is because he's done it all and been to the top of the boxing pyramid.

I have never lost faith in Mike Tyson. I always thought that if he "got serious" and "worked hard" he would be able to come back once more as champion. Well, now I do not believe that any more. After his loss to Williams it is more evident than ever that Mike Tyson is an over-the-hill, unmotivated and shot fighter. He has got nothing left. There is just one more thing left for him to do: RETIRE!!! Money problems or not, it is all over for "Iron Mike".

i agree 100% with M26. However, I don`t think Tyson should be an all time great. he will be, but only because of the media interest. His achievements don`t warrent it, victorys over Bruno, Berbick and Tubbs don`t warrent an all time great!

yap, after tyson-holyfield 1

i think the only reason why people want tyson in the ring is that they are expecting crazy things to happen, not that they are still expecting the tyson with his used-to-be boxing skills.

that's my point of view
