Give me some suggestions, please, because I was going to do a top ten and make it into a poll - yet all I can think of is the words "John" next to "Ruiz"

View Full Version : The most unpopular fighter of all time? !! Anorak 12-28-2004, 12:53 PM Give me some suggestions, please, because I was going to do a top ten and make it into a poll - yet all I can think of is the words "John" next to "Ruiz" LuKahnLi 12-28-2004, 01:06 PM Cuz he is one of the only boxers with NO redeeming quality. I mean, only his parents and his corner like him. Paul Spadafora may fall in that category too. Great 12-28-2004, 01:12 PM Johny..... Mr. Untouchable 12-28-2004, 01:15 PM Sonny Liston LuKahnLi 12-28-2004, 01:17 PM No, people liked Liston. The1God 12-28-2004, 01:21 PM Hector Macho Camacho & Son The Price had quite a few haters as well, I liked him. BrooklynBomber 12-28-2004, 01:40 PM Besides Ruiz I can only think of Holmes and Lewis. Both og them never got the credit they deserved when they were active. Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 02:46 PM Prince Naseem Hamed Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:05 PM Besides Ruiz I can only think of Holmes and Lewis. Both og them never got the credit they deserved when they were active. Too right they didn't and two fine fighters they were at that. Shame really Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 03:08 PM Too right they didn't and two fine fighters they were at that. Shame really I can understand Lewis' unpopularity (The guy was boring, never really showed heart in any fight except against Klitschko). But Larry Holmes' lack of fan fare was befuddling to me because he was simply as great a champ as there could be. He was always in exciting fights, took on the best, ducked no one. He is a much better fighter than Lennox Lewis. Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:13 PM I can understand Lewis' unpopularity (The guy was boring, never really showed heart in any fight except against Klitschko). But Larry Holmes' lack of fan fare was befuddling to me because he was simply as great a champ as there could be. He was always in exciting fights, took on the best, ducked no one. He is a much better fighter than Lennox Lewis. I think peoples problem with Lennox is that he has always been substancially better than most of the fighters he has fought and by disposing of them easily via KO or points has given people the impression that he doesn't show heart. He has rarely been in a situation where he has had to show great efforts of tremendous heart because he beat all but two of his opponents and beat them both bad in the rematches. The1God 12-28-2004, 03:14 PM I didn't like Lewis for jumping ship, from Jamaca to CA then the UK. He got my respect and I started liking him after Bowe dumped the belt. I felt Bowe was afraid of him, and I liked Bowe quite a bit too! Many people think that Lennox is ****y and stuck on himself. I am giving excuses that I have heard. I am not a Lewis hater myself. I think he played the game better than many of the HWs in my lifetime. Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 03:15 PM I think peoples problem with Lennox is that he has always been substancially better than most of the fighters he has fought and by disposing of them easily via KO or points has given people the impression that he doesn't show heart. He has rarely been in a situation where he has had to show great efforts of tremendous heart because he beat all but two of his opponents and beat them both bad in the rematches. The guy always fought safe unless he was in there with a garbage fighter (Ruddock, Morrison, McCall). If he had ko'ed Holyfield in the first fight, he would've gotten alot more props than he did. He made his choice and now has to live with it. Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:16 PM Bowe dumping that title did come across that he was running scared. I think if they would have fought it would have been an unpredictable fight. Although at the time when the proposed fight was Bowe was already on a decline. Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:18 PM The guy always fought safe unless he was in there with a garbage fighter (Ruddock, Morrison, McCall). If he had ko'ed Holyfield in the first fight, he would've gotten alot more props than he did. He made his choice and now has to live with it. True he wasn't the most exciting fighter in some of his fights but been cautious was the way to go. Getting KO'd by McCall proved to Lennox that his chin could be vulnerable for which he adopted a more cautious style after that. Against the really big hitters he knew he had to out fight them and thats what he did. jack_the_rippuh 12-28-2004, 03:21 PM Prince Naseem Hamed was very popular. I know alot of non-boxing fans who knew and talked about him.. Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 03:22 PM True he wasn't the most exciting fighter in some of his fights but been cautious was the way to go. He will never be mentioned alongside the Ali's, Dempsey's, or the Marciano's because of his style. Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 03:23 PM Vincent Pettway, who the **** is he? Like my new avatar? Does it piss you off? Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:23 PM But he made a choice and has to live with the reprecussions of it. He will never be mentioned alongside the Ali's, Dempsey's, or the Marciano's because of his style. I'm not sure to be honest, he was definatly the best Heavyweight of the modern era. He has gone down in the history books as a great but how much of a great i'm not sure. Where does he rate in your all time Heavyweight rankings? I think he's not among the elite: 1)Muhammad Ali Jack Dempsey Rocky Marciano Larry Holmes But is in the greats, second tier: --- 2) Lennox Lewis Joe Frazier George Foreman Mike Tyson Ezzard Charles He's second class of 4. 3) Good, but not great: Floyd Patterson Sonny Liston Ingemar Johnanssen Gene Tunney Jimmy Ellis 4) Titlists: Trevor Berbick Chris Byrd Pinklon Thomas Mike Weaver George Chuvalo --- Dark Destroyer 12-28-2004, 03:34 PM I think he's not among the elite: 1)Muhammad Ali Jack Dempsey Rocky Marciano Larry Holmes But is in the greats, second tier: --- 2) Lennox Lewis Joe Frazier George Foreman Mike Tyson Ezzard Charles He's second class of 4. 3) Good, but not great: Floyd Patterson Sonny Liston Ingemar Johnanssen Gene Tunney Jimmy Ellis 4) Titlists: Trevor Berbick Chris Byrd Pinklon Thomas Mike Weaver George Chuvalo --- I agree with you there myself and i'm a huge Lennox fan but we have to be realistic. :D I like how you divided that into four, it's alot better than putting them all in one set like i did. Where would you put Jack Johnson and Joe Louis? Surely they are in the top too. Jack Johnson was also in the elite. bpapa420 12-28-2004, 03:46 PM Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Jack Johnson, Naseem Hamed, Macho camacho !! Anorak 12-28-2004, 04:15 PM Yeah, it's as I thought, there's no real conclusions here. I was looking for fighters who, like Ruiz, appear to have no fans whatsoever. I mean, Frank Bruno may be derided for his boxing ability and his lack of success, but he was far, far more popular than Lewis due to his personality... in his home country at least. Naz, Tyson and Lennox have haters - but the first two also have lovers, while the third has appreciaters. There's no one that really comes close to Ruiz's overall lack of popularity. Who gave this thread one star anyway? phallus 12-28-2004, 05:50 PM I think he's not among the elite: 1)Muhammad Ali Jack Dempsey Rocky Marciano Larry Holmes But is in the greats, second tier: --- 2) Lennox Lewis Joe Frazier George Foreman Mike Tyson Ezzard Charles He's second class of 4. 3) Good, but not great: Floyd Patterson Sonny Liston Ingemar Johnanssen Gene Tunney Jimmy Ellis 4) Titlists: Trevor Berbick Chris Byrd Pinklon Thomas Mike Weaver George Chuvalo --- good list but ezzard charles IS NOT SECOND TIER, the man is one of the greatest champions of all time, he decisioned Joe Louis, and beat Walcott 4 out of 5 times, was one of the very few to take the Rock the distance and roughed him up bad Mr. Ryan 12-28-2004, 05:52 PM good list but ezzard charles IS NOT SECOND TIER, the man is one of the greatest champions of all time, he decisioned Joe Louis, and beat Walcott 4 out of 5 times, was one of the very few to take the Rock the distance and roughed him up bad He didn't dominate on the level Joe Louis or Ali did. phallus 12-28-2004, 06:22 PM He didn't dominate on the level Joe Louis or Ali did. at 175 he did, he was undisputed champ, left his title undefeated, and was undisputed at hw, watch some old films of his skills, he could really slip and slide drag0n_ 12-28-2004, 06:28 PM Hated fighters: Naz Ruiz Lewis Hatton - I think it's fair to put him in this group unfortunately, outside of the uk he has hardly any fans. |
