Asian Disaster Death Toll Passes 22,000

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press Writer
GALLE, Sri Lanka - Bodies washed up on tropical beaches and piled up in hospitals Monday, raising fears of disease across a 10-nation arc of destruction left by a monster earthquake and walls of water that killed more than 22,000 people. Thousands were missing and millions homeless. Humanitarian agencies began what the United Nations (news - web sites) said would become the biggest relief effort the world has ever seen.
The disaster could be the costliest in history as well, with "many billions of dollars" of damage, said U.N. Undersecretary Jan Egeland, who is in charge of emergency relief coordination. Hundreds of thousands have lost everything, and millions face a hazardous future because of polluted drinking water, a lack of sanitation and no health services, he said.
More than 12,000 people died in Sri Lanka, nearly 5,000 in Indonesia, and 4,000 in India. The International Red Cross, which reported 23,700 deaths, said it was concerned that waterborne diseases like malaria and cholera could add to the toll.
Dazed tourists evacuated the popular island resorts of southern Thailand, where the Thai-American grandson of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej was listed as one of more than 900 people dead. Scores more died in Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the Maldives. The waves raced 2,800 miles across the Indian Ocean to Africa, killing hundreds of people in Somalia and three in the Seychelles.
Eight Americans were among the dead, and U.S. embassies in the region were trying to track down hundreds more who were unaccounted for.
Sunday's massive quake of 9.0 magnitude off the Indonesian island of Sumatra sent 500-mph waves surging across the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal in the deadliest known tsunami since the one that devastated the Portuguese capital of Lisbon in 1755 and killed an estimated 60,000 people.
A large proportion of southern Asia's dead were children — as many as half the victims in Sri Lanka, according to officials there. A bulldozer dug a mass grave in southern India for 150 young boys and girls, as their weeping parents looked on.

"Where are my children?" said 41-year-old Absah, as she searched for her 11 youngsters in Banda Aceh, the Indonesian city closest to Sunday's epicenter. "Where are they? Why did this happen to me? I've lost everything."
Officials in Thailand and Indonesia officials conceded that immediate public warnings of gigantic waves could have saved lives. The only known warning issued by Thai authorities reached resort operators when it was too late. The waves hit Sri Lanka and India more than two hours after the quake.
But governments insisted they couldn't have known the true danger because there is no international system in place to track tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, and they could not afford the sophisticated equipment to build one.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he would investigate what role his country could play in setting up an Indian Ocean warning system. The head of the British Commonwealth bloc of Britain and its former colonies called for talks on creating a global early warning system for tsunamis.
Egeland said the issue of creating a tsunami warning system would be taken up at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in Kobe, Japan from Jan. 18-22.

For most people around the shores across the region, the only warning Sunday of the disaster came when shallow coastal waters disappeared, sucked away by the approaching tsunami, before returning as a massive wall of water. The waves wiped out villages, lifted cars and boats, yanked children from the arms of parents and swept away beachgoers, scuba divers and fishermen.

In a scene repeated across the region Monday, relatives wandered hallways lined with bodies, searching for loved ones at the hospital in Sri Lanka's southern town of Galle — one of the worst-affected areas of the hardest-hit nation. People lifted blankets and soaked clothes to look at faces in a stunned hush, broken only occasionally by wails of mourning.

A tractor brought in about 15 corpses of mostly women and children, some wrapped in white plastic sheets, while a Buddhist temple across the street tried to help people find their missing.

"The toll is increasing," said Brig. Daya Ratnayake, a military spokesman. "We are finding more bodies."

Indonesia and Sri Lanka had at least a million people each driven from their homes. Helicopters in India rushed medicine to stricken areas, while warships in Thailand steamed to island resorts to rescue survivors.
In Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province at the northern tip of Sumatra, the streets were filled with overturned cars and the rotting corpses of adults and children. Shopping malls and office buildings lay in rubble, and thousands of homeless families huddled together in mosques and schools. The minaret of the city's 125-year-old mosque leaned precariously.
At least 3,000 people died in the city of 400,000, which was virtually unique in the region in that Banda Aceh was destroyed by the temblor rather than the floodwaters. Officials said Indonesia's death toll could double to 10,000 when the full devastation in Aceh province becomes known.
In Thailand, the government offered free flights for thousands of Western tourists desperate to leave the southern resorts ravaged by the tsunami. Chaos erupted at Phuket airport as hundreds of tourists, many bandaged and brought to the airport in ambulances, tried to board planes for Bangkok.
Bodies were pulled from roadsides, orchards and beaches as Khao Lak resort, where the Swedish tour operator Fritidsresor said 600 Swedes had not been accounted for.
Jimmy Gorman, 30, of Manchester, England, said he saw 15 bodies, including up to five children and a pregnant woman, on Phi Phi island, one of Thailand's most popular destinations for Westerners,
"Disaster. Flattened everything," Gorman said. "There's nothing left of it."
The United States dispatched disaster teams and prepared a $15 million aid package to the Asian countries, and the 25-nation European Union (news - web sites) promised to quickly deliver $4 million. Japan, China and Russia were sending teams of experts.

Egeland said he expected hundreds of relief airplanes from two dozen countries within the next 48 hours

That is probably the saddest story I have ever heard in my life.

This is very tragic and sad.

There should exist ways that reduce the impact of tzunami waves on populated shorelines.

I am worried, and I hope these strong earthquakes will not repeat anywhere in the world.

Apparently it took from 40 minutes to up to 2 hours for the tzunami waves to travel from the earthquake epicenter to the shorelines of Indonesia and Sri-Lanka.

What there needs to be is an early global warning system for these kinds of events.

If you live on an island, with a tidal wave coming, there isn't any place for you to go anyway, it matters not if it takes 2 minutes to get there or two hours - there is no way to get everyone off the island, it is part of the risk of living near a shore.

I deal with the threat of hurricanes every year, hurricane Ivan got within 70 miles from my house just this year, while my house wasn't damaged, the destruction just 1 hour east of New Orleans was incredible. Had hurricane Ivan hit New Orleans, my house would have been hit by a storm surge about 30 feet high - I live 500 yards from the Mississippi river which would have flooded over the banks and right into my house and New Orleans is 9 feet BELOW sea level as it is, so really the wave would be 40 feet high - that would have taken the entire city right off the map, along with me too as I stayed at home and didn't heed the evacuation order, I have too many animals to take care of so I stayed with them....

I just read the death toll is now 44,000 and still counting.

US scientists based in Hawaii actually saw the tsunami coming after the earthquake and they sent warning e-mails to Indonesia and neighboring countries. But it's just a matter of minutes when it struck so there really was not enough time, it was too late.

My prayers and condolences to all South Asians. It's really sad that the victims of great calamities like this have to be the poorest of the poor. And during this supposed-to-be festive time of the year... :(

The death toll now stands at 55,000 confirmed dead (estimates run as high as 60,000). Very sad new year holidays (ther will be no more...it's just inappropriate)...the flag is at half-mast.

Here in Thailand, 60% of the victims were westerners on holidays in the resort islands of Phuket and Phi Phi ("The Beach" starring Leonardo diCaprio).

All coasts face risk, expert says

By ROCHELLE SQUIRES, STAFF REPORTER

A Canadian tsunami expert has been urging government officials around the world for 40 years to wake up to the potential disaster of deep-sea earthquakes. "Maybe this present calamity will make people think twice. I'm hoping they will now get an early-warning system for the Indian and Atlantic oceans," said Dr. Tad Murty, an expert on tsunamis who is affiliated with the University of Manitoba.

Murty warns of the potential disaster facing all countries -- including Canada -- that border on ocean water without a tsunami warning system. "Until it hits you, you see nothing. It comes as a real shock," said Murty during a telephone interview with The Sun from his home in Ottawa.

The Pacific Ocean has had an early-warning tsunami network since 1946 to forewarn Pacific Rim countries of dangerous and destructive tsunami waves. The Tsunami Warning Centers -- located in Palmer, Alaska and Ewa Beach, Hawaii -- are responsible for saving several lives by issuing early warnings.

"Within 15 minutes, the staff at the centers determine how deep the earthquake is, determine the magnitude, and if they know there will be a tsunami they will notify the public," said Murty. "Even a few minutes' warning can save lives."

My deepest sympathies again for all our South Asian brothers. :(

Human Hand behind earthquake and Tsunami? It is time for Indian Navy to investigate!
Balaji Reddy, Special Correspondent
December 29, 2004

Was this an earthquake creation experiment that ran out of control? Many countries are working on methods of creating massive earthquakes as means to defeat the enemy. The technologically advanced countries are working on this project.

If an earthquake and Tsunami can be created artificially and directed to a specific enemy, it can literally create havoc to the enemy. Weather control, controlling tectonic plate movements, electromagnetic wave simulated weaponry are all on the table of many countries.
The planetary alignment can cause many earthquakes all around the world of magnitude the modern mankind has never seen before.

Many all around the world are puzzled with the fact that Tsunamis never happen in South Asia. Also is perplexing is the fact that Tsunamis traveled 1000 miles at a speed of 500 miles an hour and smashed the coastal lines of South and South east Asia where Tsunamis do not happen.

There are technologies on the research table that is used to create electromagnetic effects to release the gravitational effects which can cause this kind massive earth movements.

Another astonishing feature of this earthquake and Tsunami is the amount by which the Kar Nicobar Islands have displaced. The level of devastation simulates 10 or higher Richter scale earthquake.

Was this a show down by a country to show the region what havoc can be created?

We do not have the answers to this. We know many courtiers including India are working on anti-gravity lifters and devices.

No matter what, it can be an experiment that went out of control. If it is not, that is the best news.

But given the level of devastation and given the fact India is a regional power in South Asia, Indian Navy has the obligation to investigate and tell the world what they found.

First let me say that it was truly tragic and my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones.

Now I'd like to address the UN and any foreign nations who have the nerve to call the US stingy. The last time I checked the US government had offered the second most aid of any country and more was on the way. And that is not counting the millions of dollars in private contributions that are flowing in from US citizens. We provide military protection for the majority of the globe. As the number 1 consuming nation on earth we keep the global economy churning along. We give the lions share of funding to African nations that are devastated with the AIDS virus, as well as being on the leading adge in research and funding to find a cure for AIDS, heart disease, cancer and other deadly diseases. Boy we Americans sure are stingy, huh!?

While I'm on the subject, remind me again of how much money in relief aid Indonesia, or any nation, offered the US after Florida was hit by 4 hurricanes in the course of one month? How much relief aid did we receive after 9-11?

Aren't most of the area's affected by the tsunami predominantly Muslim?

I'm not some insensitive prick, but I must say that the talk of the "stingy US" felt like an international slap in the face. The US was by far the largest contributer of economic aid around the world last year. Perhaps the US should cut off all governmental financial aid to foreign countries and concentrate solely on domestic issues. I bet our nation would still be one of the top donors based soley on private contributions, but perhaps it would send a message that it isn't wise to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Steps off soap box.

I just finished reading a very interesting book by Ken Follett called The Hammer of Eden It was about a group of domestic terrorists who used a sonic vibrator to cause earth quakes in CA. I'm not very familiar with the science, but the worlds leading geologists have detailed chrts of the techtonic plates and were the stress is greatest. These are the points where devastating earthquakes are most likely to occurr. It's easy to imagine that large explosions or even sonic vibrations that scan the spectrum of wavelengthts could set off earthquaks, if they were done in the specific places along fault lines where the pressure id the greatest.

its logically possible the men can already do something this big, but this particular case, i don't think so...

the quake epicenter was at the bottom of the sea and to move the plates that way, you need nuclear explosion of 100 megaton force ...

(i am no rocket scientist but IMHO this catastrophe is an act of nature)

Earthquakes and tidal waves caused by them did occur before in South Asia, but on a different scale.

The strong quakes are rare events that occur very infrequently.

It would be interesting to see how the dumbass Indian military "investigate" the quake.
