Brickhouse187, my friend Elvis, and I were smoking weed the other day watching Scarface when I realized something: This movie is amazing! This is the only entertaining depiction of the Cuban crime wave of the 80's. The movie had Pacino, a guy with balls, play the toughest crime boss ever. It showed he was also a person with humor and loyalty to friends and all that other ****. I really liked this movie. Also, Sean was doing Tony Montana impersonations and I was cracking up.

There's another thread on this somewhere that someone made recently, but I didn't post on it.

The term "gangster" movie could include everything from The Godfather to Shaft to Menace II Society, I suppose.

I would rate Scarface among the better, definitely one of the more memorable, and probably the most quotable.

"What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of ****in' *******s. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your ****in' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!" - Tony Montana

Godfather wasn't bloody enough. It was mostly the hierarchy of the mob and balancing the Corleone checkbook most of the way. It took alot of attention to watch that movie.

Recognizing that "gangster" can encompass a wide spectrum, here are the "cream of the crop" of those I've seen, and I watch lots of movies...(listed in order of preference)

Must-sees

The Godfather Part II (1974)
The Godfather (1972)
Scarface (1983)
On the Waterfront (1954)
Boyz N The Hood (1991)
The Godfather Part III (1990)
Casino (1995)
Pulp Fiction (1994)

Menace II Society (1993)
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
Little Caesar (1930)
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Donnie Brasco (1997)
True Romance (1993)
Carlito's Way (1993)
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Get Shorty (1995)
Mean Streets (1973)
My Blue Heaven (1990) - a comedy

On the flipside, I would probably put MP: Da Last Don as the worst gangster movie I've ever seen, with Gigli close behind.

I would rank a couple other memorable titles, Hoodlum and The Untouchables somewhere inbetween.

I realize my list doesn't have much merit until I see the orignal Scarface (1932), Miller's Crossing

scarface is overrated , i think it s unwatchable nowadays ; too long , too slow, plus the build of gangster movies is always the same : rise , top , fall , which makes them moralist IMO (if you do crime you ll end up dead or in jail boy).

i like donnie brasco and carlito s way , first because they avoid this cliché build and second because my cousin plays in carlito's way .

Scarface may not be as realistic as Godfather, but it certainly was more entertaining and was more unique in that they showed that even sociopaths are people.

The Godfather and Goodfellas are both better than Scarface.

yes, scarface is the best. why?

the little things most people don't catch. Like when Omar Suarez first introduces Tony to Frank, Tony gives him the stuff, and says "It cost my friend Angel his life." and frank says "If people would do business the right way, there would be no ****ups like this." then he looks at Omar for just a second, the camera shifts to Omar for like a split second, and he has a guilt-ridden frown on his face, looking at sosa in disbelief. (for those that do not know, Omar was supposed to give tony and his friend a legit job, but since tony was a smartass he sent him on a suicide mission,to a hotel with a chainsaw wielding columbian, cut up his friend) there are many more parts like this in scarface, you just gotta watch.

scarface>godfather>goodfellas>new jack city

that one part on new jack city never fails to make me laugh when the white cop says something like 'who cares about pooky one less crackhead' and Ice-T wearing a funny hat gets pissed off and yells "**** dat" and shoves the white cop.

;)

that movie is hilarious, it's so racist though towards white people, in the beginning some white cop beats the **** out of this little black kid, lol I bet that movie caused a riot somewhere

it's a remake of Little Caesar, but it's usually lumped in with all the other blaxploitation films of the time. They all have lots of violence, nudity, and white, racist badguys. And a funk soundtrack...

Brother was OKay.

Best gangster movie ever....it ain't scarface.

If Godfather I & II are considered gangster films then it is them for certain.

Another worth mentioning IMO is King of New York with Christopher Walken.

Goodfellas is my choice.

Scarface is way over the top, & no movie looks as dated as that one.
Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent flick, one that I loved for a while. But, it has not stood the test of time.

Godfather ? Just a tad overrated. A great film, but a bit too heavyhanded & serious for my taste.
I think Goodfellas was more realistic in its portrayal of these guys being idiots to a large degree.

What about "Snatch" ? That's definitely on my list.

i'm gonna have to give it to the Godfather I & II. way more character developement and ellaborate plots.

tony montana was ok but you can only watch it so many times before it gets old. i can watch the godfather over and over again and get something new outt've it everytime.

the only praise i ever hear about scarface is how ballsy and ruthless montana is. personally i think sonny corleon was better. and michael's character was way more developed and intelligent.

i like gangster movies where they portray gangsters as businessmen- not gun totting dumb****s.

You have to see City of God... ;)

Aside from the powerful reality that this movie is based on a true story...

...and the fact that it is incredibly directed...

...and that it seems like a hybrid of Kids and Menace II Society...

I think what I will remember most about this movie is the woman who tells the snitch's wife to warm up a banana and insert it while she is being "taken from behind".

I've heard a lot of crazy stuff; that's the first time I heard the banana trick, though...

Scarface is the most overrated movie ever. Is it a good movie? Yes. Is it some movie that even breaks my top 50 movies of all time? Hell no. It's overrated by people who watch Cribs because rappers say it reminds them of going from rags to riches like they did.
