The Forgotten TOMMY UREN.How Good a Fighter Was Tommy Uren ??... could you name two or three fighters who you would rate UREN as of a similar calibre. Tommy Uren is more well known for his political career,... this thread has no interest in that part,,..... just his boxing career, and his standing as a world class fighter who had scored some very impressive scalps. Among the very good pros that Uren fought were Jimmy Clabby - W 4, L 1, D 1,.(draw ; win pts 15 ; win pts 20 ; win pts 20 ; loss pts 20 ; win pts 20),..Fritz Holland - W 2, L 2, (win pts 20 ; loss pts 20 ; win pts 20 ; loss pts 20),... Eddie McGoorty (win pts 20),.... Herb McCoy (win KO 4 ; loss pts 20 ; loss pts 20 ; win DQ 6),.... his biggest rivalry was with Fred Kay, with 8 fights with honours about even. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tommy Uren usually gave away a fair weight advantage in most of his big fights during his prime (about 4 years 1915 - 1919)... Tommy was a WW who had to go into the MW division for the big fights. Uren wasn't a big puncher, even for a WW, but he was a very skillfull fighter, to get a better idea of how he fought we need to go to source newspaper reports for information of his fights I will post links for that. As far as I know there has never been a decent attempt at a small biography of this man who is in the Australian Hall Of fame. Tommy seems to have been a very tough fighter but by 1920, Tommy is slipping badly and he seems to suddenly be vulnerable to being knocked out, maybe his chin went, I don't know, but I will attempt to find out more about this remarkable Aussie Battler on this thread as I read through the sources, I don't in any way claim him to be an ATG, but he was certainly a top-notch fighter in his prime. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Among other things, Tommy Uren was a very good Rugby League player, who played in the big-time, for Manly-Warringah (the devil-team),.... Unfortunately, Tommy Uren is more well known for being a POW of the Japanese in WWII. Unlike most fighters, Tommy Uren had a full and complete life, a man who had at least 4 lifetimes worth of experience, and was a very successful man,,,,, who in the major part of later years as a Member of Parliament. I'm surprised Australians don't seem to remember his contributions these days........ One remarkable life indeed/

This writer says that Tommy Uren is a better fighter than Aussie great Vic Patrick. Now Patrick was great southpaw and a vicious puncher and if Uren is that good he must have been very good. (apparently he's more of a LW too).. I may have miscounted the Fred Kay fights.... 9 instead of 8 ??? http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=newssearch&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CDYQqQIwAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.google.com%2Fnewspapers%3Fid %3DpAERAAAAIBAJ%26sjid%3DIJMDAAAAIBAJ%26pg%3D5582% 2C4232697%26dq%3Dtommy%2Buren%26hl%3Den&ei=FTCbTo28JMnamAWh4b2aAg&usg=AFQjCNE6-BAt02G63YyTxncV39vRFixPRA&sig2=V7tChFEHAbLX0ZPMm4GDuQ

UREN AGAIN VICTORIOUS.
Holland Tough and Game. ;' But Uren Too Clever. There was a very large attendance on 1 Monday night when the Australian welter and middleweight champion. Tommy Uren, met "Frits" Holland for a purse of £500. A The Town Hall seats 3000 people, but there must have been over this number there on Monday, and the audience included several of the fair sex. Uren scaled IO st 111 lb, and was esquired by his brothers, Toddy ana Havilah, while Fritz scaled list 31b, and was attended by "****" Crawford and Joe Straff on, the well-known constable, who has never yet preferred a charge of assault against an offender. Uren looked hard and well trained, but Holland appeared short of work, although he did not admit this. Both fighters received a. rousing reception from the crowd. The boxers started fighting; as soon as they met, but thero was little of note for the first eight rounds, but from this point to the Devils Round, where Holland scored freely with tsoeoo heavyweights, Uren had been in the lead, As usual, the latter was master of the infighting, wher he used his straight lett and got home to his opponent's. Jaw on Innumerable occasions. On one occasion, Holland swung his right across and missed, but on the return he caught Uren. In the 10th round Hollannd tried to upper-cut Uren. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the tenth round, Holland tried to uppercut Uren, but though the blow was a vicious one, it was very late enfl UJren nodded his thanks for the let off. At the close of this ronnd Uren's left g'ove. which had split early. In the contest was replaced and the longer respite seemed to be relished by Fritz, who came up very fresh for the 11th round, and again in the 12th he got home at the beginning with a left to the Jaw and immediately followed It with another one and a. heavy right to tho body, all of which badly beat Uren's guard. In the fourteenth round, Uren piled up points and his victory, bar a knockout was assured. The final round saw both men very strong, but there was no damage done during the lap. When the gong went. Holland went to meet the Referee, ***9632;but Tim scorned him, and crowned Uren. The verdict was correct During the fight there were some very fierce slams, ***8226; but they were mostly blocked and evaded, and at the latter art Uren shone and repeatedly made Holland miss badly. The latter ***8226;was always prepared to go m and fignt, and though ho got punished badly on occasions, he always came on looking for more. Some of his rigbta looked hard enough to stop a train but they aid not worry Uren, who bored and punched away at the ribs of Fritz. _ The fight was the best seen In Wellington and it was willing all through. Some very hard blows were exchanged m all tho rounds, but, as a "whole, It _ was a clean exhibition, BJid though both trt«a to get m little points at Omej^they were -sss? s e^ en^^xxs sr u^ thur CuTtayno introduced HavOah Uren and Eugene Volaire to the crowfl and both boys were wen receTretL

Sydney Stadium scrap on Saturday night last was between Tommy Uren (Aus.) and Harry Stone (U.S.A.), and the Australian won on points. . Originally the date was fixed for the meeting of Dave. Smith and Joe Chip, but it was found necessary to abandon the scrap., Uren and Stone have now fought four times. Uren has won three of the bouts, Stone once. A fortnight ago tho pair' met m Brisbane and Uren won. :boxing:

Another BUMP for one very decent but sadly forgotten fighter, considering the amount of big names he fought ( and did very well against ).. I believe he deserves to be noticed, I actually blame Darcy for the fact that Uren is forgotten,, if Darcy had lived longer maybe Uren would have had a higher profile, instead of being the first in a long line of Aussies to be called "the next Les Darcy", when in actual fact he was the one and only, Tommy Uren.

Thank Rory and to Barnburner as well, and both of you made fair comments, there is never any question as to him being Immortalised, no I am not trying to claim him as an all time great, far from it. Contender is what Tommy was, no doubt about it, but the mans life story is notable. Apart from being one of the better fighters of his time, Tommy Uren joined the AIF at what must have been at a grandfather type of age and he fought against the Japanese, and then he survived shocking conditions as a POW for most of the war, and most people know that just to survive Changi is a feat of its own, the cruelty the POW's suffered is legendary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He then took up politics (joining the Labor party, whose politics I do not like, but thats another story),, and was a member of parliament and was certainly far better known for that than he was a boxer. For every famous boxer there are dozens of highly talented fighters, Tommy Uren was such a fighter and boxing was better off for having him than it would have been without him.
