Kostya Tszyu's dream of a superfight with American great Oscar De La Hoya in 2005 and a $US10 million ($13 million) payday looks like becoming a reality. It would easily be the biggest fight and pay cheque of Tszyu's career.
De La Hoya's Los Angeles-based management told The Sun-Herald the chance of a De La Hoya-Tszyu fight in 2005 was "very, very good".
"That's a big fight," vice-president and matchmaker at De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, Eric Gomez, said. "It's a very big fight. Kostya Tszyu has a great following and he's an exciting fighter, especially in the Mexican community.
"Ever since he knocked out Julio Cesar Chavez [in 2000] he got the attention of a lot of the Latinos here in the United States and in Mexico. So we would think that's a big, interesting fight and one that the public would want to see."
De La Hoya, with his good looks and boxing talent, is the most marketable boxer in the world. In his last fight against Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins in Las Vegas in September, De La Hoya earned a cool $US35 million, despite being knocked out by Hopkins.
De La Hoya would expect at least $US25 million to fight Tszyu. Tszyu would earn about $US10 million, more than double his usual purse.
After the Hopkins loss, De La Hoya announced he would move down from the 72.6 kilograms middleweight division to the slimmer 66.68kg welterweights. Tszyu is the undisputed champion of the 63.5kg junior welterweights, but has said he would step up to the welterweight division to fight De La Hoya.
"I think the chances are good. Very, very good," Gomez said when asked to rate the chance of De La Hoya-Tszyu in 2005.
The final decision belongs to De La Hoya. "We still don't know what Oscar wants to do," Gomez said.
The 31-year-old De La Hoya has not named his next opponent, but says Tszyu is an option. The problem for Tszyu is De La Hoya has plenty of options because he is boxing's biggest payday.
Don King recently called the LA-based Golden Boy Promotions offering De La Hoya a rematch with one of his great rivals, Puerto Rico's middleweight champ Felix Trinidad.
Gomez said light middleweight champ "Sugar" Shane Mosley, former welterweight king Vernon Forrest and undisputed welterweight champ Cory Spinks were options. Tszyu has also had his eyes on Spinks.
"We've had calls from Cory Spinks's people who want him to fight Oscar," Gomez said.
If De La Hoya anoints Tszyu as his next challenger, the fight will most likely take place in Las Vegas, although Australia or Moscow would not be ruled out.
"They will want to be well compensated so whatever country or venue comes up with the best deal they will want to go there, but nothing has been ruled out," Gomez said. "Just from dealing with Oscar throughout his career, it's hard to beat Vegas because they guarantee a lot of money when Oscar fights."
De La Hoya is holidaying with his family over Christmas.
"He's relaxing enjoying the $35 million he made from Bernard Hopkins," Gomez said.
Lefthookhappy19 12-25-2004, 07:27 PM This fight would have been sweet a few years ago. Now, Oscar will probably have to much movement and that jab for Tszyu to deal with. Though who knows? Maybe a welterweight Tszyu will be a total powerhouse and a real threat.
Kimmy 12-25-2004, 07:54 PM Its a shame these fights were having are not for titles. I know that a title doesn`t matter in the scheme of things but in the future when we look back in the history books these fights will be non title and might lose their value. I just like big fights to be world title fights thats all!
Hurlex 12-25-2004, 08:15 PM i am going for kt by ko..oscar will get caught eventually and kt will work the body well (like he does)
itsbusdriver 12-25-2004, 08:37 PM wow... i'd love to see this fight happen.. very interesting match up here.. but i'd love to see Kostya pull it off.. it should be a great fight.. cant wait
Truth 12-25-2004, 08:43 PM I think De La Hoya would win by a 10th round TKO, I think the fight would look similar to De La Hoya's fight with Vargas. I think Tszyu would look to strong at first but then Oscar would start up late and eventually take a tired Tszyu out.

...Not only do I think he will beat Oscar but I think he will brutaly beat him and knock him out. Oscar thought he had balls fighting Hop, they must be steel to want some Zoo.

By Ray Wheatley -- World of Boxing
IBF 140 pound champion Kostya Tszyu is currently in Russia and has stated that he hasn't signed any contracts regarding his next title defense. American promoter Murad Muhammad has offered Tszyu a $14 million four fight deal. English promoter Frank Warren is confident Ricky Hatton will meet Tszyu in Manchester, England. "I am in Russia this Christmas Eve and it has been a very special time for me over the last two weeks," said Tszyu. "It was a great honor to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and to receive the Russian Sportstar of the Year Award for athletes living outside the country. I have also become an International Ambassador for Moscow’s bid to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. There have been many statements by others over the last few weeks that I have agreed to fight Ricky Hatton or even Oscar De La Hoya next. The truth is I have not signed any contracts or made any decision on when, where and against whom my next fight will be."

Okay clear enough :D these people can now stop dreaming. SCREW MURAD!
hollister 12-26-2004, 05:21 AM Guys, I love KT, but this is a fight that doesn't need to happen. Oscar is too tall and fast for KT, that is, if they fight at a reasonable weight, maybe 147. KT is great, but the height and reach would be alot to overcome....

Actually this article is older than the one posted by Nautilus. So maybe we will get the chance to watch this fight. I hope
trephination 12-26-2004, 12:20 PM I don't see this fight ever happening
WidowTaker40 12-26-2004, 02:00 PM DLH has superior power, reflexes, defense and overall ability, not to mention size, so this fight is a one side throttling with DLH coming out the winner.
Tsyzu is a good fighter but DLH is a COMPLETELY different animal. Do any of you think that Tsyzu could hang with a prime Trinidad like DLH did. I did not think so.
Nautilus 12-26-2004, 02:20 PM DLH has superior power, reflexes, defense and overall ability...
says who?
.
oldgringo 12-26-2004, 02:59 PM If DLH is anywhere near the fighter that he used to be at welter, then Tszyu will be beaten soundly. Who knows if he still has the desire to win big fights after Hopkins (hey look at RJJ, he was KOed after the Tarver fight saying he was hungry again...). If DLH comes in with some tenacity then Tszyu is biting off more than he can chew. Kostya is no spring chicken either. DLH by mid to late stoppage or by comfortable decision. The whole, "Tszyu will eventually catch him" deal doesn't work with a great welterweight who has fought harder guys with a harder punch.
bert988 12-27-2004, 12:19 PM delahoya destroys kostya...theres too much of a difference, people that dont see this are blinded by hate against delahoya

I agree..Tszyu is a great fighter, but the last few fighters he has beaten have been good but not great...De la hoya is also a great fighter. I don't think tszyu matches up too well against De la hoya. I think de la hoya will whoop tszyu decisively...
m00ks 12-27-2004, 01:08 PM It's gonna be a DLH-Gatti beatdown once again. Tszyu too small for Oscar. I mean come on, after taking shots from Trinidad, Hopkins, Vargas, Kostya's shots would tickle.
Gorilla Dogs 07-08-2010, 01:15 AM hoya would have been too fast and good for t dog
