I'd go with Tyson. Too many losses to poor competition. You can knock Marciano for not fighting any good heavyweights in their prime but at least he always beat the guy they put in front of him.

because of rocky maricano era the he fought threw..he must be cuz he never had any great competition

also lenox lewis fought threw a easy as hell HW era..filled with shot legends and old guys that once were good...if lewis was in the 70-80's HW era..he would have not even been top 10

Man that phrase right under your name says volumes about you, size may play a small factor but punching power comes more from quickness than from strength and heart plays a big role in boxing. I have a really hard time seeing as you say any top twenty fighter of today being a champion of any era. Imo even a prime Larry Holmes would outbox the hell out of Lennox Lewis and Vitaly K. But a prime Goerge Foreman would probably kill them both.

Mr. Ryan

I would say Mike Tyson. The man was built up to be invincible, then loses to Douglas, Lewis, Holyfield, Williams. Drops 4 rounds before knocking out Francois "The White Buffalo" Botha. The man was more hype than anything. Prince Naseem would have been, had he been highly regarded.

People talked about his fights in the 1980s like he couldn't have been stopped...

I saw his fight against Tillis....he looked like GARBAGE!!!
In his prime, he never looked invincible to me, I saw MANY flaws in him...especially him fighting bums...

Number 2 I would have to say Felix "Tito" Trinidad...

He looked like pure CRAP against a old shot over the hill cocaine head Pernell Whitaker and like crap against Hector "the ***" Camacho...

(Marciano ducked Corley Wallace because Wallace knocked out Maricano in 1 round as a amatuer)

Imnorw, that is a complete load of ****!

You probably got the information from an AP report of Wallace's death, but did you know that they also came back shortly after and admitted they made an error in reporting it as a KO victory for Wallace? They only fought once as amateurs (took place in March of 1948), and it was Wallace who won a controversial three round decision. Here's a brief fight description that I have from it;

"Rocky swarmed after Wallace at the opening bell. He was throwing wild but heavy punches that landed everywhere, on the arms, the shoulders, the top of the head.

The crowd at Ridgewood Grove Arena in Brooklyn was on it's feet cheering. They sensed an upset, and even though Coley was a local favorite, they abandoned him.

But Wallace was an excellant boxer for an amateur, and he soon adjusted his style to cope with Rocky's bull-like rushes. It was the classic boxer versus slugger contest that fight fans crave.

Wallace had been scoring points with his slick style, but he did not have a punch to hurt Marciano. As the fight ended, Rocky was battering Coley against the ropes.

Wallace had been stylish, but Marciano had carried the fight to him throughout all three rounds and had delivered all of the punishing blows.

When the judges announced Wallace the victor, the fans, who believed Marciano had won easily, were indignant. They booed and threw soda bottles and programs into the ring."

Here's a couple of links to Marciano's record that clearly shows that it was a decision win for Wallace, including one that also mentions the controversy surrounding the fight;

http://www.ring8.org/discuss.htm

http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/rocky.htm

Imnorw, you've made your feelings about Marciano very clear since you've been on the forum, but you should try to avoid fudging the truth, or at least learn them before you go spouting off that type of crap.

That guy is talking out of his ass and is obviously clueless to what he's talking about. For your viewing, or more importantly for that moron's education, here's the Ring's annual rankings for both the 1930's and 1940's;

http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_Heavyweights--1930s

http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_Heavyweights--1940s

A simply crosscheck of Louis' record shows he fought the vast majority of the top contenders of his era, and it's ridiculous for Imnorw to claim Louis ducked anybody during the late 30's and early 40's.

BAREKNUCKLES

Roy Jones Jr. is not over rated. He is just old now, and that seems to happen to every fighter. It's a funny thing..... age. It seems to get the best of all of us.

We can't really say that a fighter was over rated just because he fought a little too long and let father time get the best of him. Almost all of the great fighters have been guilty of that.

Roy Jones Jr. was probably one of the most invincible fighters I have ever seen in his heyday.

Muhammad Ali could not have been beaten when he was 27 years old unless he had been drugged. Nobody even came close.

Marciano beat everyone he fought. What more can you say about that? Yes, he was strange to watch and awkward looking, but he KO'd lots of guys.

If we want to talk about over-rated fighters, and in my mind, "over-rated" would mean fighters that never really lived up to their billing. These fighters to me would be:

Wladimir Klitscko
Gerry Cooney
Mike Tyson
Michael Grant
Vinny Pazienza
Michael Spinx (at heavyweight)
Marvis Frazier

These are some obvious ones to me. There are lots of them, but alot of them were blown up to be the next big thing, and then they faded into obscurity.

Tyson may have won the title at 21, yet I still argue he is the most overrated heavyweight of all time. For all the hype, Douglas beat him pretty decisively, Holyfield owned his ass, Lewis as well. Any time he stepped in the ring with a good fighter, he ended up on the losing end.

Vargas is overrated in my opinion because all he had was power, he won fights that should have been losses(i.e. Vargas/Wright, Vargas/Quartey).

As far as Lacy, wait until Taylor moves up to 168 and you'll see precisely what I mean. Lacy is too open when he fights. Somebody is eventually gonna expose him and that'll be the end of Lacy.

Of course, Lacy may have more boxing ability than he lets on, and I could be completely wrong.

Dude you cant be serious...Ali was the greatest heavy weight by far, Mike Tyson was the youngest heavyweight champion and was just plain nasty..The old timers you have there were all great..and they fought with tiny gloves..not with these pillows that they fight with today. Marciano-180 pound light heavyweight or cruiserweight who fought moslty other 180 pound light heavyweights or cruiserweights.he ducked any black right who wasn't really old or just a complete cum(Marciano ducked Corley Wallace because Wallace knocked out Maricano in 1 round as a amatuer)Tyson never fought any top level fighters who were in their primes by yet still was knocked out 5 times.Louis ducked black fighters until later in his career and they all beat him.Dempsey ducked all black fighters period.De la Hoya gets beat every time he faces a decent black fighter.And Sugar Ray Robinson is overrated.You look as his record in his prime and you go wow but who did he fight?Mostly really slow italian guys with no punch or skill.He ducked any black fighter who he knew could beat him like Charley Burley and when he did fight black fighters like Tommy Bell he had a hell of a time beating them or lost.Turpin beat Robinson with ease and was beating Robinson again in their second fight until Sugar got lucky.

I know you hate anything that isn't black, but when you put that **** in your posts, it makes you look biased and ignorant.

SIX ?

Please ! He never won a real title at 130 (beat a nobody in Bredahl, for a worthless WBO belt).
He was given an absolute gift against Sturm.....& if you think Sturm was the middlewight champ just because some **** organization said so...damn, you hate boxing !

Listen the first rule is when it comes to threads like this is taking a fighter out of his time period. To say Dempsey would get killed today is horse ****. But to play ur games but todays heavyweights in Dempsey's era where they fought 20 rounds and there was no nuetral cornor so you could stand over ur opponet. Also arguably Dempsey one of the best boxing skilled heavyweights of alltime in Gene Tunney, we havent seen a heavyweight boxer skilled like this in 20 or 30 yrs.

And why are ppl mentioning Gatti how the hell is he overrated, the man has exceeded all expectations when it came to him being a fighter. A two time champ at 2 differnt weight classes. Most boxing experts said his career would be done at 30, especialy after the de la hoya fight but Gatti came back beat a former world champ in Millet gave boxing fans another glorious triliogy for the ages and won a title at 140 defending it twice w/ early KO's.

To me that is exceeding expectations
