It's because, when a farmer tosses the hay with a pitchfork, he uses a wide, swinging motion. Hence, the word, haymaker!

i believe this was a question that someone asked harold lederman once. he gave a wierd answer but it seemed reasonable, wish i could remember waht it was

Thought it was the swing motion of the reaper (device) they used to cut the hay. Had to swing it to make the hay.

Correct. It is a scythe that is used. I heard that the two explanations can be made. One cuts the hay...while the pitchfork actually makes the stacks. I would probably tend to go more with the scythe aspect.
