Good observation. The amatuers are about speed and "touching" a man. The pros are about hurting the man.

There is no doubt you hit harder WITH weight shifting. That has already been answered.

this is a good question all aspiring fighters and current fighters should take notice of. As previously noted, weight shift punches are more customed for pros than amatuers.
Amatuers is more about quick flicks, tap and paw punches to rack up the points. Pros more abouts agression and ring dominance.
Some good amatuers who made it on the world scene in pros, still have a robotic amatuer style that has advantaged and disadvantaged them at time. for example, Chris Byrd the middleweight olympian from 92' barcelona olympics transformed into a heavyweight world champ, due to his brilliant boxing skills and fast amatuerish style, although he is critcised for lack of punching power his boxing ability he picked up as amatuer had paid off. i'm sure Chris has a wallop of a punch that would put any average man out if he wanted, but Chris chooses to use his fine boxing skill from the amatuer style to conserve energy and maintain his speed of punch throughout the 12 rounds. RJJ uses the best of both worlds, at the right time he will throw his body behind those killer left hooks and leaping right hands, but most of the time measure his opponent with lightning fast jabs, that are almost forearm punches.
mike tyson, george foreman, rocky mariciano and joe frazier transferred their bodyweight behind punches. If u think u r strong for ur weight, by all means u should incorporate ur body behind the punch cos theres a chance of KO'ing ur opponent. IF ur small and medium strength for ur weight id stick to more speed and boxing skill. e.g. sugar ray leonard, not a strong middle or welter weight, but had awesome boxing skills and used them to his advantage rather than tryn 2 brawl.
its ur choice.
