It's been over a year since I've had a fight. Hurricanes have ****ed up everything. Ivan ****ed up a big U.S. vs U.K. tournament that was to go down in Ft. Walton, Florida. A year later Dennis ****s up ANOTHER one, which would have been my 1st fight in over a year. OK, well...I finally found a gym in Tallahassee, where I go to school (FSU). They call themselves the Tallahassee Fighting Tigers. The coach of the gym gave me half-priced membership since my last name is Kimmons. A Kimmons used to co-train with him there and my uncle Tommy (the one who reffed Jones-Tarver III) referred me to said co-trainer who then told me how to find the gym. It's a gym in the "ghetto" you might say and hardly any white boys in there...haha. I'm one of 3 I think. The coach is this loud dude who smokes Newports in the ****in gym...it's annoying but otherwise he's kewl.
Anywho...I haven't had a handful of days in the gym and the coach tells me we're gonna be fighting at the end of this month. So today I had to spar, and he wanted me to go 4 rounds. Keep in mind I hadn't even sparred for over a year. Here's how the sparring went:
round 1: vs some 17 yr old novice...132 lbs fighter...fairly even round...neither one of us went all out. I couldn't go all out if I wanted to cuz I don't have all the stamina back yet, plus I was rusty. He had some decent skills, but nothing special obviously. He trains etc etc but he is a novice, slightly below me. Had a decent jab. I tried not to hit him too hard or beat him too bad. Just hit him with the occasional shot. It was good to get back in and see how I felt in there.
I took a round off and the 17 yr old spars another guy...a massive muscled 160 lbs fighter who looks like a miniature Duncan Dokiwari. After they went a round, I sparred Dokiwari...lol.
round 2: Dokiwari is obviously much more skilled than the 17 yr old novice. He is calm and collected and very aware in the ropes. I can tell he is holding back his cards so as not to be too unfair to a man who hasn't sparred in ages. Stupidly (but because it's what I like to do) I stayed on the inside with him and we traded punches. The man has a good body shot. He keeps his guard high and tries to walk me down. I turn at an angle most of the time on the inside so my left shoulder is touching him around his chin. I'm able to step back and land some good left hooks and short counter right hands to the side of his head, which gets me some kudos from the trainers. After the round I feel tired and can tell I'm not yet ready to fight, but I think I will be by the end of the month.
take 2 rds off as dokiwari look-alike and 17 yr old spar a couple rounds...
round 3: Me and Dokiwari again. This man is used to sparring a lot, I can tell. He's already sparred a good deal by this time, twice as many rds as me for the night. Even so, it's not the least bit unfair in the ring. This round, I use more footwork as I'm tired and don't feel like getting pushed around on the inside. I'm on my toes moving left and hitting him with snappy jabs. My jab is very good and I don't like to be lazy with it. I hear some kudos from some other fighters outside the ring about my snappy jab. Even so, Dokiwari impersonator is able to time me from time to time and land some good shots. My nose is getting a fair shellacking. In this round, I do a bit of an RJJ rip-off, throwing a lead left-hook which lands often as he comes in slowly towards me. He lands a couple body shots that really are sapping mr by this point, and the bell rings and I'm glad.
All in all not a bad night for having been off for so long, but I got a little ways to go to get where I was and to get better than I was.
