Castillo-Corrales II PPV numbers lower than expected!
By G. Leon

October 12, 2005 - Although the exact number has yet to be released, impeccable sources have informed **********.com that the Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo Showtime PPV generated 75,000-100,000 homes less than the 350,000 homes Showtime was expecting. Another example of how most people have LOUSY taste.

This fight had some great word of mouth.....I though it would have sold better.
Perhaps those passing on the good words should have thrown in how Corrales once hit his pregnant wife ? Maybe that would have given it the Tyson-effect ?

100K PPV buys is disgusting, insulting, and disheartening considering that Roy Jones and Toney Tarver got 405K.

What a ****ing joke!

I hold Jones and Tarver directly responsible, they ripped off fight fans so bad the week before that there was no way most were about to shell out another $50.

Thanks alot Toney and Roy, you both owe Chico and Castillo a couple hundred grand each!

That means about 250k bought. Its not that bad.

That means that the fight lost money. If their analysts predicted that number than they paid the fighters and promoted the event according to their predictions. Being 100k off is huge money wise. So its very bad man. They lost money on the event.

wtf do you keep saying Toney?

I think the fight lost money simply because of Tarver/Jones and the fact that Chico and Castillo are not household names...which they should be...that is a fault of the sport and its screwed up state that fighters like them don't get the exposure throughout their careers

Tarver/Jones III is why the numbers are less than expected. I thought this fight would at least break 350,000 buys because on fight night damn near every street in my neighborhood was filled with cars which means that most people around my way bought the fight.

No I don't think there were any swinger parties going on that night just a bunch of drunk people watching the fight. When the streets are packed in my neighborhood on a fight night then the PPV numbers are usually good.

This fight was poorly marketed and promoted from the get go.

-The venue: Thomas & Mack Center. Why on earth did they have the fight there? I was there and at least 3,000-4,000 seats were empty, if not more. It's off the strip, not really far away, but the casual walk up fans aren't going to want to go off the strip to see the fight, too much hassle. There was also a lot of confusion from casual fans as to where this fight was taking place, lots of people thought it was being held at Caesars, when they found out it was at T & M off the strip they said forget about it.
Mandalay had Sumo wrestling all weekend so they couldn't host it, but I can't see why the MGM wouldn't want the fight, unless they had a concert going on that took the date anyway.
This fight lost money, you could tell by the box office at the arena. Even though there were plenty of cheap upper bowl seats empty and available, they refused to sell them on fight night. They would only let the walk up crowd purchase seats that cost $600 and up. That tells you they had trouble selling out and wanted to gouge the walk up crowd.

-TV: Showtime is a backwoods operation, always has been. If HBO had this fight it would have done the extra 100,000-150,000 PPV buys they needed to make money, and they would have had close to a sellout for the live gate.
HBO knows how to hype their fights. TV coverage is the most important medium for getting the word out to casual fans.
Hell, I had no clue tickets went on sale until that very day by accident, luckily read it on a message board a few hours before they went on sale, otherwise I would have had no clue to the sale date.

-Tickets: You couldn't buy tickets through ticketmaster, HUGE MISTAKE! tickets could only be purchased through UNLVtickets.com or through Caesars. Ticketmaster is the prime ticket broker in North America, people go to their web site to see what events are going on, this fight wasn't listed there and you couldn't buy tickets for it there.

All of these things factored into this fight not doing as well with the live gate and with the PPV numbers.
Bob Arum has been in this business for years, you would have thought he'd know all these factors would make this fight a more difficult sell than it should have been.

The one thing I can say is that they had one of the best merchandise booths I've ever seen at a fight.
Two different t-shirt designs, two different on-site posters (you never see posters for sale at fight anymore, but they had them), plus the usual hats and programs.

But the promoters of this fight (GSP and Top Rank) blew it in three areas.

-Venue
-TV
-Ticket broker

I'm pretty sure that there were only about four of us on the "predict the number of ppv buys" thread that actually came close. I remember Manny P was one of them. I picked 275,000. Some people were predicting as much as 800,000 to a million. No way that was going to happen. As much as it sucks, neither guy is a "name."

And yeah, I'm done with Showtime PPV. They sucked ass.

In a fight like that, that was so dramatic, people like to sit back and think about it for a while, before wtaching the same fighters do it again...Unlike most people I really wasn't interested in seeing them fight so soon, because in 6 months how could they show anything more than they did the first fight. I believe they needed to fight atleast one other opponent before stepping in teh ring with each other again, so they could improve and have time to practice on what they learned about each other and themselves in that first fight...I would have rather seen them in their with someone else and then face each other again next year around the same time as the first fight, then the **** would have been a highly anticipated rematch, instead of the fiasco that took place last week from the weigh in until corrales got laid out...

Hopefully the numbers are better than what is expected now. Both fighters deserve to be house hold names. Its funny HBO PPV's always do better than showtime PPV's no matter how crapy the card is.

it's no secret really.

HBO PPV got betta presentation, betta commentator, betta way of promoting fights!!!!

Show PPV seems like they need quick cash to pay of their debts. LOL!!!!!!

Okay, and Castillo won the rematch....looked spectacular doing it. He's fought great opposition pre corrales and I wont take a 'guess' on how many peoples p-4-p list he's on cause I just dont know. So, in other words, I see no difference.

Also, Castillo cheated in the rematch.

Also, Castillo cheated in the rematch.

Lol, that particular quote was in response to an ongoing debate over it being implied that it's all Castillo's fault the ppv sales didnt do better, and about somehow diego deserved a ppv fight while jl didnt
Either way, I dont consider it cheating because not making wt. is nothing new to the sport, and it had nothing to do with the win since diego still outweighed castillo come fight time.
The whole mess is a classic double standard, and if they were to fight again diego would still lose. He only won the first fight cause he actually DID cheat.
