View Full Version : tyson and olympics
BlackBeltNow 12-21-2004, 07:18 PM Well I had always wondered why tyson never made it. One place, I heard it was politics. Other places, I heard it was b/c amateur is too different than professional, and that a guy did beat him and take his olympic spot. Can anyone help clear this up for me?

Henry Tillman beat tyson twice as an amateur, and one of those times he beat tyson out for the olympic spot, of course when tyson fought tillman as a pro he knocked his ass out

^^^ Yeah what he said.
BlackBeltNow 12-21-2004, 08:22 PM so anyone see the am fights tyson lost? i'm curious how he coudl have, b/c i saw some of his amateur fihgts and the extra padding didnt' seem to stop him from KOing ppl
SweetScience 12-21-2004, 08:34 PM Tillman was better at that time that's all. Tyson's style was most suited for the pro ranks. Tillman when on to win a gold medal and Tyson when on to become the 'baddest man on the planet'. As mentioned earlier, Tyson took out Tillman in one round.

wait. what time was it when tyson attempted olympics? was tyson famous yet? or was he still growing
SweetScience 12-21-2004, 09:42 PM 84 Tyson fought Tillman twice and lost. It happens sometimes, Mosley didnt make the Olympic team as well.

yea i was curious aobut tyson for a second reason: i guess thats not encouraging to hear for short guys who ever dreamed about going to olympcis haha
Tyson was reportedly robbed of the decision in both of those amateur fights against Henry Tillman (I haven't seen them, only heard or read about them being robberies).
Tillman also benefitted from incompetent judging when he "beat" Willie DeWitt for the gold medal in the '84 Olympics (I have seen that one, and DeWitt definately should've got the nod).
And for the Christmas of '84, Santa Claus brought Henry all the toys that he wished for in his letter to him, and then some...
pug1986 12-31-2004, 09:05 PM I've watched both fights, in the first one was closer but I still think tyson won. the second he was just robbed, Tillman basically ran and slapped the whole time getting knocked down in the process, and he even loooked suprised when they raised his hand afterwards.
Great 01-01-2005, 02:10 PM Tyson has really lost the first fight, the second fight was close.

yes i have seen them, both close, remember in amateur knock downs only count for 1 point the same as normal punch scoring.

yea that doesn't even make sense. a knockdown will "waste" like maybe 5-8 seconds of your valuable scoring time. a 3 hit combo wil get you 3 points in maybe 2 seconds. it really discourages power.
jayrichardse 01-31-2005, 01:01 AM i dont know about this
jayrichardse 01-31-2005, 01:01 AM there should be something on his website
lennon 03-10-2005, 01:27 PM ive got both fights on tape. The first round of the first fight tyson put tillman down with a combo to the body, but was totally outboxed the rest of the fight, second fight was a bit closer.
Tillman jabbed and moved on his toes, tyson looked as clueless as he did against lewis, interestingly at the end of the second fight the trainers in tillmans corner can be clearly seen, one of them was Emmanuel Steward.
lennon 03-10-2005, 01:30 PM both fights were during the 84 olympic heavywieght box offs.
Having seen lennox lewis`s fight against tyrell biggs in the 84 olmypics at super heavywieght id have to say lewis would have done well against tyson then. Of course they did spar in 84.
Sinatra.Jr 03-11-2005, 05:46 AM Tyson's style is suitable for pro fighting. Probably he down the Tilman
in the Olympic eliminated fight. But in amateur rule that is 1point lost,
if that in pro fight 2point usually given. So I think amateur fight is only step to pro fighting to Tyson.
Dynamite76 03-24-2005, 10:03 PM Neither did Page,Ramos, and Davey Moore.

who won?, i hear that is was draw.
Rockin' 03-25-2005, 04:08 AM Ya know, I fought with a guy that beat Tyson in the amatuers. I had heard that they had fought a couple of times. there is actually a tyrant of the fight in the index. The guys name is Craig Payne. He has alot of skill but........ He is actually in training again from what I have heard. Wants to get some more fights from what I hear. If he would have been training seriously when he was younger I might be responding to a thread about him being a heavyweight champion. The guy had so much talent................Rockin'
