Moss fighting re-entry into NFL drug programESPN.com news services

Raiders wide receiver Randy Moss is waiting to hear from the NFL's medical director of substance abuse regarding whether he will be placed back into the league's drug program.

After Moss told HBO Sports last month that he has occasionally smoked marijuana, the NFL's medical director, Dr. Rick Spodafora, called Moss in for testing on the grounds that through his words, Moss has indicated that he has resumed his drug-related behavior.

Four years ago, Moss entered the NFL's drug program. The seventh-year pro was subsequently tested up to 10 times a month, but he rotated out after testing clean in the two subsequent years.

But Moss refused Spodafora's recent testing request. Fox Sports reported Sunday Moss' attorney, David Cornwall, set up a meeting to lobby on Moss' behalf that spoken words during an interview were no grounds to be readmitted into the testing program. Cornwall met with the league and Spodafora met last Tuesday to discuss the issue.

In an August interview with HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Moss said he still smokes marijuana "every blue moon."

"I have used, you know, marijuana ... since I've been in the league," Moss said. "But as far as abusing it and, you know, letting it take control over me, I don't do that, no."

When pressed whether he still smokes marijuana, Moss said: "I might. I might have fun. And, you know, hopefully ... I won't get into any trouble by the NFL by saying that, you know. I have had fun throughout my years and, you know, predominantly in the offseason."

Spodafora, who is independent of both the NFL and the National Football League Players' Association, is still considering Moss' argument. No timetable has yet been set for a decision. If Spodafora rules that Moss can be tested and the wideout still refuses, Moss could be suspended since suspensions could come from two missed drug tests -- as Moss has already refused to participate in one.

Is it me, or has Moss lost a step??? When he was with us, if he got passed the defense and made a catch he was gone! I saw the highlights of the game on sunday and he caught one past the defense and was ran down easily by the defender, I can't remember his name. Maybe the Vikes knew something... Just a thought.

Fair enough... I honestly wish the vikes would have traded Culpepper instead and kept Moss. You see how we are doing now, oh wait, same as the Raiders. Still, Culpepper sucks without Moss!

....Terrance Newman caught him from behind easily and it wasn't due to an angle. He made up 3 to 4 steps very easily. I would say either Moss's speed is gone or it was slightly over exagerated to begin with.

...You didn't see Terrance Newman run him down like was standing still when he was in full stride? It's not even open for debate if he got caught from behind or not.

When guys like Moss say this stuff you realize how disconnected from reality a lot of thse guys are. You know, it's not the smoking pot that's bad, it's the fact that he sees nothing wrong with announcing it to the world. Never mind that that's a dumb**** thing for anyone to do, since you're basically admitting to committing a crime (not that it should be illegal, but that's another story). But the thing is that when you say this sort of thing it's an insult to everyone that has a stake in him: his teammates, and more importantly his fans.

The thing is that the fans pay the player's salaries, and we pay a lot, in tickets and in putting up with relentless advertising on TV (to cover rights costs). Can you imagine if you were paying a guy to paint your house and halfway through he talks about how much pot he's smoking on the job? And the fact is, even though this is the off-season, the sport is so competitive now that conditioning is important year-round. You get millions of dollars, you're expected to earn it to some degree.

I'm not saying he shouldn't drink or smoke or whatever. You know everyone cheats the system a bit. But the fact that he saw no problem talking about this shows that he has no respect for the people that support him.

I was suprised to see that also. I just assumed that, like usual Moss wasnt giving 100%.

I watched the game and so what he got caught, we still scored a TD and Moss went over 100 yards again.
