View Full Version : For All You That Say Roy Jones Doesnt Have Heart
JONESDESTROYSTARVER 10-02-2005, 09:46 PM how can you say that. I dare you to say it after last night.
because he never had to dig deep before the first tarver fight you all assume he has no heart, instead of giving him credit for dominating everyone he ever fought.
yet you give guys like gatti, ward, etc.... all the credit in the world for struggling with F class fighters.
he was out on his feet last night in the 11th round after the right hook and then huge left uppercut, yet some how managed to come right back and throw a few punches. after that he was in trouble again for a while yet still managed to battle back towards the end of the round.
I think Jones can still do a lot in boxing. If he shows up like he did last night and throws more punches he can beat anyone.
his reflexes, speed, defense are all still there.
Tarver is my dad 10-02-2005, 09:54 PM I agree, after my dad stunned him with the right hand in the 11th round, I thought it would be over. But Roy still kept punching back and gave my dad a good body shot at the end. The only dissapoint of the fight was Roy should've thrown more punches, if he had thrown more punches, he would've definately won.

it would have been so great if jones some how came back and knocked tarver out, that would have really shut people up.

In the 5th round, Roy threw an uppercut that shook my dad and almost lost his balance. If he was a little more agressive, he could've knocked him out. I believe in the later rounds, Roy could've knocked out Tarver if he was more agressive also.
InThisCorner 10-02-2005, 10:03 PM Roy def has heart and the heart of a champion BUT he is so mentally unstable in the Tarver fight after his two brutal KO's.
Truth 10-02-2005, 10:17 PM Just for taking the fight, he has heart...he didn't need the money. Roy has plenty of money...
jabsRstiff 10-03-2005, 07:17 AM I disagree....
I'd rather see someone go in & fight to win, take a beating, & quit on their goddamn stool !
At least, at some point, they were TRYING TO WIN, & gave us something to enjoy.
I don't want to rent PPV matches, only to have one fighter aim to not get KO'd, as opposed to looking to win.
Don't give me any crap about Roy" boxing" in there. He was straight up afraid to make any contact, & it resulted in a horendous fight.
Roy shouldn't have taken the fight if he didn't intend to win.
Bombardier 10-03-2005, 07:47 AM I think Roy's claims about just wanting to put on a good show are nothing but spin. I think at least for the first 5-6 rounds he wanted to win but saw that he couldn't without taking a pounding himself. Which given his suspect chin, could have gotten him KOed out of there early again. The fact that Tarver had him out in the 11th only proves what people were saying about him, that he's too damaged to sustain any more punishment in the ring.
jabsRstiff 10-03-2005, 07:50 AM & why was tarver so shot after attempting to finish Roy off in the 11th ?
Yes, it was late in the fight, but so little fighting was done over the course, I would've expected that Tarver have some gas in his tank.
Bombardier 10-03-2005, 07:56 AM Who knows with Tarver, he's almost as much of a head case as Roy. His endurance has always been a bit wacky, you think he's doing fine and then suddenly he stops fighting. I don't know.
Roy probably could have finished him off in the 11th or 12th. But by that time I think he was psychologically checked out of the match. It was like Ali - Liston II except he put up a fight for a while and didn't go down.

You thought it would be that way Jabs, anyway... Gunshy was the term if I remember.
I was thinking by the end of round 2, as I sat in a pub here in Melbourne.... "gunshy".

Yes.....but, I thought while the match was happening that Roy had a real chance at winning had he put forth the effort.
He was even more gunshy than I expected, while having more of an opportunity to win than I had expected.

Particularly having seen Tarver so gassed after putting in a surge in the 11th. You wonder what would have happened if Jones really backed himself in rounds 6 & 7.
I honestly thought Roy was a big chance half way through, but it really seems that his mindset (having never been overly aggressive anyway) is just totally shot. I was getting pretty annoyed, & nearly walked out just before the punch that staggered Roy.
Having said that, it was kinda nice to see him fight on & show a bit when hurt - he actually took more chances, probably because his mind was foggy...
ferociousmisty 10-03-2005, 09:52 AM I don't ever like to question the heart of someone who is doing something that I am not. If I'm sitting on my couch drinking a beer (ok, maybe wine or a wine cooler lol) then I'm not gonna question the heart. I may complain about the performance or the wasted money, whatever, but not heart.

What about when they're making several million dollars, which you helped fund ?

I couldnt mopther ****ing agree more! Dont make me pay $50 bucks when you have no real intentions of putting fourth a winning effort.
Bad bad weekend of boxing, thank god for this week!
Jones has no heart. Why? He chose not to mix-it-up with Tarver, because he knew he really couldn't take the chance of getting tagged and, as he said himself, "lookin' like a chump".
Well Roy, you had your chance to dis-prove most of your detractors by taking it to tarver and proving you are truly the man. Trouble is, you wouldn't commit to throwing anything more than one or two shots at a time, because you never knew when that Tarver left hand might end your night.
Sure Roy should get some credit for coming back in the 11th after eating a good right hook, but that is not "heart". Roy lasted simply because Tarver wasn't able to land just one more shot to Roy's chin, burnt himself out in the effort, Roy sensed that and only then did Roy get brave. There's no way in hell Roy would have chosen to mix-it-up with a fresh Tarver, because he doesn't have the heart to do it.
A fighter with "heart" doesn't fight like Roy did on Saturday. Roy tried to steal rounds by being cute, Roy tried to do just enough to win one round at a time, Roy got cheeky and danced and tongued Tarver but didnt back it up, Roy fought like he was afraid to fight the guy in front of him. That's Heart?

Like I said, I might complain that I wasted my money but I don't think it is my place to question their heart. They are getting in the ring, risking their life in some way and all I'm doing is sitting on the couch complaining that they don't have heart....doesn't make sense to me.

I agree. I saw the fight sunday and I thought at first it will be a war. But the first 4-5 rounds went by and both just stared at each other. Boring fight. Jones clearly is afraid of the KO, if not he would have brought it to Tarver. Antonio did his part but Jones just went around like a clown.
I don't blame people for not respecting ROY now. A lot of people paid good money to watch a career-defining moment and all they got was an ass-**** fight. I'm a Roy Jones fan, but honestly, I was pissed and disappointed with how Jones fought. He should retire coz he's got nothing more to give to boxing except sticking his tongue out.

This is my first trip back to the forums in quite awhile, I saw the fight on Saturday and frankly I think RJJ is a piece of ****. In my opinion he robbed the paying public of whatver it cost them to see the fight. I won't ever hold him in high regard again, the guy is a ****ing busted coward for all times in my eyes. 5 ****ing punches in a round, a club fighter would've gave more effort than he did. Then I had to listen to Tarver give himself more credit than he should by saying Roy was at his best and "fought his heart out". Roy Jones = bum in my eyes, prior to this fight I still would have told my grandkids he was a great one, no longer. ****ing chump!
Super_Lightweight 10-03-2005, 05:20 PM LOL...I love armchair quarterbacks.
Fact is, Roy looked like he had a real chance after 5 rounds. He just got wore out. He gets tired too easy after coming down from 200. It was seen in the Johnson fight as well. He just cannot sustain offense like he used to do.
Roy has heart, but no one should encourage him to keep fighting just because he had brief glimpses of his former greatness vs Tarver. Roy was breathing with his mouth open in round 6 and by the time 11 came around when Tarver was really tired, there was no chance in hell for him to stop Tarver. The punches he threw in retaliation were very weak...but at least he tried.

That's a far cry from a try. Gatti vs Mayweather was a try. Tyson vs Lewis was a try. Fight or go the **** home, don't dance and stick your ****ing tongue out when you have absolutely nothing but cowardess to celebrate. You ****ing premadonna lovers are so blinded. The guy was a joke on Sat...plain and simple. Worst effort I have seen in many many years.
Super_Lightweight 10-03-2005, 05:29 PM LOL at the guy with a pic of Gatti in his avatar saying Gatti-Mayweather was a try....yeah right. Gatti got stopped. Roy did not get stopped and is a smarter fighter than Gatti ever dreamt of being.
Do me a favor and never compare Roy Jones with Arturo Gatti.
Primadonna lover...right...what do you know about me? Absolutely nothing. There are plenty of objective fans who are not Roy Jones fans especially and they feel the same way.
Chill back.
Tarver is my dad 10-03-2005, 05:42 PM some of you people amaze me. Half you idiots don't even know what heart means. Does heart mean that you gotta do what it takes to win? or does heart means that you gotta fight fist to fist and mix it up? Showing that Roy took this fight shows that he got heart. He didn't mix it up with Tarver because he knew he might get KO'd again and he didn't want to lose. So he strategized and tried to find the best way to beat my dad. By the later rounds, Roy probably realized he wasn't doing enough to win, so in the 11th round, he tried to mix it up a little and he got caught with a right hand by Tarver that badly stunned him. But he still didn't give up and still started punching and landed a good body shot at the end. I think Roy could've done a little more but what do you expect from a man who most people thought he was completely shot and wouldn't last a full 12 rounds with Tarver.

Another ****ing idiot that puts words in people's mouth. I never compared RJJ to Gatti, I compared their efforts in a fight that many thought they had no chance to win. Do you like a basketball player that doesn't try to score, do you like a baseball player that goes to the plate and never swings? You give him credit for being smart and not getting stopped! I didn't know boxing was an IQ test (if so Roy and his pitifully dumb ass would fail miserably). Nor did I think the objective of boxing was to "not get stopped". I actually thought the objective was to make an effort to win. You're just a Pensacola nuthugger, just admit it.
Super_Lightweight 10-03-2005, 05:45 PM I'm a Pensacola nuhugger, I admit it.

All good dude, we all have our opinions....I just think Roy robbed me a $50. I can see why people love him so much, he was incredible to watch for many years. I wish he woulda stayed home instead of turning in the performance he did.

So which one is heart? Mixing it up and get knocked out or strategizing to win the fight?

To quote Herm Edwards:
"You play to win the game"
He should have fought like he needed the knockout, cause that is what he needed. He wasn't strategizing he was surviving.

if he was just trying to survive, why did Roy punch back after he got stunned in the 11th round.
Parodius 10-03-2005, 06:26 PM if he was just trying to survive, why did Roy punch back after he got stunned in the 11th round.Your dad is mad at you. You said that he would've not beat Jones in his prime. Your dad prime was drugs. Show a little more respect to your dad. Your dad never had a prime, because he was doing crack cocaine. Your dad is a little older then Jones. It wasn't that your dad was in his prime beating Jones again, again & again.
