View Full Version : Tszyu deal to fight Oscar
kborges 12-21-2004, 10:00 AM KOSTYA Tszyu is poised to close out his career with a staggering $20 million four-fight deal that would include a superbout with Oscar De La Hoya, the richest boxer in history.
The offer is being made by Murad Muhammad, one of the three most powerful promoters in the US alongside Don King and Bob Arum, and could see Tszyu have his next fight against England's Ricky Hatton at a football stadium in Sydney.
Tszyu has long dreamed of a fight with De La Hoya who he first met when the American was a gangly teenager at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle.
"I would love the chance to box against Oscar," said Tszyu, who is holidaying in Russia after receiving a major sporting award there and having a private audience with that country's leader Vladimir Putin.
"At this stage of my career I only want to have the big fights to leave a legacy in the sport.
"You can't get much bigger than fighting Oscar De La Hoya."
De La Hoya recently announced his intention to move back from the 72kg middleweight division to fight as a 67kg welterweight and declared this week: "I would love Kostya Tszyu [as an opponent], he is definitely someone I want to fight."
Tszyu's mentor Johnny Lewis, the most successful fight trainer in Australian history, yesterday gave his stamp of approval for Tszyu to face De La Hoya declaring: "If Kostya wants to take the fight I don't think he would have any trouble with Oscar.
"I always felt that when Oscar was moving up through the weight divisions he was avoiding Kostya as a junior-welterweight and this would give everybody the chance to see two of the all-time greats go head to head."
Muhammad, who has promoted such fighters as Larry Holmes, Roy Jones Jr and Manny Pacquiao, is offering Tszyu $US14 million ($18.2m) to promote his next four fights and with sponsorship the purse would top $20 million. He will also guarantee Tszyu $10.5 million to stage his next two bouts.
The deal was first put to Tszyu by IBF vice-president Ray Wheatley, Australian boxing's most powerful figure.
"I will make Kostya Tszyu, his manager and promoter, richer and more famous than they could be with any other promoter," said Muhammad who has backed 35 world champions and 60 world title contenders over the last 40 years.
"There are some huge fights out there for Kostya Ricky Hatton, Arturo Gatti, Floyd Mayweather and Oscar, and Kostya deserves to be paid as one of the greatest fighters in the world.
"Kostya is a very exciting fighter but he is still not well known by the general public worldwide.
"He comes to America, wins his fight and then goes home. Every time Kostya fights in America he is the out-of-town opponent.
"A great champion should not have to fight in anyone's backyard."
Tszyu has been offered $5.2 million by English promoter Frank Warren to fight Ricky Hatton, the No. 1 contender for Tszyu's IBF junior-welterweight title, in Manchester but Muhammad scoffed at that proposal.
"Kostya has to realise he's the champion not the challenger," he said.
"Why would Kostya want to fight Frank Warren's fighter on Frank Warren's terms in Frank Warren's backyard?
"I'm now offering Kostya more money than he has ever seen and he can fight Hatton in Sydney on his own terms.
"Boxers come into the industry for three reasons: To win the title, to make money and to make more money."
Muhammad stressed he did not want to interfere in any promotional contract Tszyu already had.
"Kostya's current promoter [Vlad Warton] signed him early in his career and you have to respect their contract," he said.
"[Warton] will make much more money than he has ever made from this deal.
"I am not trying to cut him out but I want to work with him so that everybody benefits."
Muhammad recently drew a crowd of 40,000 to see his Filipino featherweight destroyer Manny Pacquiao fight in Taguig in the Philippines.
"Manny was getting $5000 a fight before he signed with me and now he's getting a million a fight and is one of the biggest names in the game," Muhammad said.
"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that if I could draw 40,000 people to a non-title bout in the Philippines I could do even bigger numbers in a beautiful city like Sydney with a great champion like Kostya."
bigdlb12 12-21-2004, 10:35 AM imo Kostya beats Gatti, beats Hatton and has trouble with Mayweather and DLH, I actually think both Mayweather and DLH would kill K.T. @ 147lbs
Bombardier 12-21-2004, 10:38 AM I've never been a fan of DLH but cheers to him for continuing to take on big fighters. Goes to show that a committed fighter can rise above the promoters and set up superstar matchups.
puppy_dogg 12-21-2004, 10:40 AM oh man i would love to see DLH and tszyu. i think the edge has to do to dlh but damn i bet that would be a good one. lets hope it happens
mic573 12-21-2004, 10:45 AM I hope the fight happens because I think Tsyzu will give Delahoya a tougher fight than most think. I can even see him pulling out a close victory.
germanys_hope 12-21-2004, 11:01 AM hahahahahaah! De La Hoya. Man this guy is out of order!!! Other boxers are retiring after such a loss against Hopkins. Sorry but that fight is a big joke. DLH will loose clearly.

Why do you discredit DLH so easily? It seems to me that DLH has a good chance of beating Kostya. It will be an entertaining fight to watch. The fight could go either way.

my question is this.....how big is boxing in austrailia? is kostya as popular in austrailia as pac-man is in the filipines? i only ask because i don't know. not to be a smart ass or anything like that. i love kostya tszyu.

Kostya would slap floyd around just like he did his father before him. Kt would stop floyd early!

two things
1 sven ottke is a fraud
2 hatton will kill kostya before he ever gets to de la hoya and if he does get that far dlh will destroy him pretty fast.
Oubliette 12-21-2004, 11:21 AM i doubt it man i very much doubt it
jr is far better than senior in this case

That will be the day...!
If Murad, flew trapeze, ate fire, got sent off by a cannon and rammed himself up a wall in Taguig he won't draw 40 people.
Pac drew those people and had Murad done a better jonb, there would have been more than what Luisito Epinosa drew at the Luneta, which was widely reported with figures ranging from 250,000 to 300,000!
Kostya would slap floyd around just like he did his father before him. Kt would stop floyd early!
Zoo never faught Floyd's father idiot. That was his uncle and he was way out of his prime when Zoo beat him just like Chaves was. It would be different against a prime #for# fighter

Yes he is very popular here, I believe a big name fight in Australia would draw a massive crowd. Everyone loves KT in Oz!

ahhh,this looks familar.
:D
QueenCity 12-21-2004, 10:02 PM For a guy that has only fought once in the last couple years, I can't look four fights down the road for the guy. I just hope we get to see that fight with Hatton, I'm still waiting on that to get signed.
grayfist 12-21-2004, 10:16 PM IF (and that's a big IF) Murad manages to swing all that, then, I think Kostya as much as any other in the business--perhaps more than most-- deserves it. He has been getting, relatively, nickels and dimes all through the years that he's been dominating what argueably is current boxing's most talent-laden division.

The second I saw Murad Muhammad's name I laughed my ass off. That guys full of it dont believe anything he says especially when it comes to making fights.
Silverfox 12-21-2004, 11:41 PM imo Kostya beats Gatti, beats Hatton and has trouble with Mayweather and DLH, I actually think both Mayweather and DLH would kill K.T. @ 147lbs
Kostya would have NO problem with DLH. In fact, it would be beddy byes for Oscar, again!
He would find it more troublesome with Mayweather. Providing that FM was able to keep away from the big punch, he would win it on points. Otherwise, if caught, KO!
Kostya will dispose of Gatti fairly fast.
The hardest fight will be with Hatton. Depending on their own individual 'homework' and how they are on the day....it could go either way. I think that Hatton will be too strong for him. But hey, who knows, this is a very unpredictable sport. One punch can always turn a fight!

thanks I needed a good laugh

I agree totally. DLH is washed up. Sturm gave him a hiding and was robbed of the decision!

Gotta disagree. DLH should hang up his gloves!
marvdave 12-22-2004, 12:06 AM I feel Oscar would use his superior size and be able to beat KT. Comparing the Strum or Hopkins fight to a potential KT matchup is apples and oranges. Oscar would be the bigger and yes, stronger fighter in this one. I can't believe the lack of respect Oscar still gets.
Oscar by tko
this opinion has nothing to do with any disrespect to KT. He is a great fighter as well. The old addage is good big man beats good little man.
This fight has a lot to do with how DLH copes with coming back down to 147.
wissy 12-22-2004, 04:06 AM my question is this.....how big is boxing in austrailia? is kostya as popular in austrailia as pac-man is in the filipines? i only ask because i don't know. not to be a smart ass or anything like that. i love kostya tszyu.
Don't worry, boxing here in Australia isn't really huge, but Kosta Tszyu IS. So any fight in Australia will be packed out if Kosta is fighting. Just like the Leija fight, where 60000 packed the Telstra Dome to watch.
wissy 12-22-2004, 04:11 AM two things
1 sven ottke is a fraud
2 hatton will kill kostya before he ever gets to de la hoya and if he does get that far dlh will destroy him pretty fast.
1. Agreed, Ottke is the epitome of fraud.
2. Disagree, Frank Warren knows he can't beat Sharmba Mitchell, thats why Hatton has missed so many chances to fight him, what makes you think he has any better of a chance at beating Tszyu. Warren is asking the fight to be fought in Manchester, shows his confidence.. (fighting in a packed Manchester stadium, is not an excuse, as a fight in the states will ensure bigger exposure and larger purses later on)
WillieW 12-22-2004, 04:19 AM I actually think both Mayweather and DLH would kill K.T. @ 147lbs
Really? I agree a fight at 147 with DLH is to Zoo's disadvantage, but I think the opposite about Mayweather. PBF has a real chance at beating Zoo at 140, but at 147 I can't see it happening....he is too small and the added weight won't help him. Zoo at 147 should actually have more power and it shouldn't affect the way he moves. Just thought it was interesting, why do you think PBF would fare better at 147?
pinkpanther 12-22-2004, 04:44 AM I'm sorry but Zoo would batter Gatti, the fight with DLH would be a good one - hard to call, Mayweather would be a good fight but I think Zoo might have to much power for him and Hatton well, they say styles make fights - IMO Zoo has to stop Hatton thats the only way he's going to win - theres a good possibility he might as Hatton hangs his left low and we all know about Zoo's right hand, but if it goes the distance theres only one winner, Zoo just won't be able to live with Hatton's work rate.
pinaldino 12-22-2004, 04:46 AM Let's hope it's not another bull**** to make noise about dlh once more...I would favor KT to beat him but what a fight it would be anyway!!
bigdlb12 12-22-2004, 10:04 AM Really? I agree a fight at 147 with DLH is to Zoo's disadvantage, but I think the opposite about Mayweather. You stated that Mayweather is too small for 147 and Kostya isnt when PBF is 5'8" with a 72" reach, while K.T. is 5'7" with a 67" reach, PBF has 32w 21ko's 0 lost and 0 draws
and
K.T. has 31W 25ko's 1 lost 0 draws
Basically PBF will be the bigger man and has great skills, he has shown it over and over again in the ring, look what he did to Corrales. I know Corrales is no K.T. but hell he was at the top pf his game.
Now DLH, need I say more? 5'10.5" 147lbs, still great speed and can take punches by the best and harder hitters that K.T., Vargas,Tito,Campas etc... Speed will be there again @ 147 and he will be the stronger better boxer
marvdave 12-22-2004, 10:10 AM KT v MW is a great fight. PBF can win a decision if he is focused on Boxing...not punching with KT. I didn't like what I saw in Floyd's last fight. He was too flatfooted. Even though he won most of the rounds, he got hit way too much. If KT hits him, bye-bye. That would be a much better fight than KT v DLH.
DLH too big and strong for either guy
RussianArm 12-22-2004, 03:35 PM DLH is a bag of flab, he looked like a ball of putting in his last fight, he needs to go and work out for a long time before considering jumping in weight again. Plus Kostya would put that fraud golden goose out of commission even if he came in at 190.
Deejay 01-11-2005, 01:18 AM As much as I like KT, I think DLH will be too big, too fast and too slick for him. Wins unanimous decision easily or if he presses hard, late ko. As for Floyd, he better stay clear of KT cos he'll get KTFO!!
mr. bojangles 01-11-2005, 03:54 AM Originally Posted by bigdlb12

I agree.
@147, ODLH TKO's KT. As much as I like Zoo, Oscar would just be too skilled, quick and powerful for him to handle.
Floydmayweather 01-11-2005, 03:06 PM Why should DlH hang it up. He looked to be in great shape against against BHOp. He was doing fine until he got caught. If anything that will help him against zoo. His power is nothing to hopkins. And Dlh will be faster and even better shape at 147. I will laugh when Oscar knocks him out.

A reply to your question mate. Im an aussie and let me tell you kostya is very big back here.Auastralian boxing was going nowhere
untill kostya came on the scene. Now we have major contenders for world titles thnxs to kostya .He brought a hole new interest to the sport to alot of young troubled kids..

Memorex 10-22-2005, 09:26 PM omg if this fight happens , dlh will make kostya look silly. dlh would destroy him with his boxing skills
ottoevans 10-22-2005, 09:50 PM i would love to see Kostya fight Hatton, gatti and Oscar.
I think he can beat Hatton and Gatti but Oscar he would loseby TKO.
Oscar hasnt fought at JR. Welterweight since 97' against Gonzalez
hes fought JR. Middleweight and Middleweight since 01'
Kostya has fought at JR Welterweight all his life and hasnt moved up, oscar would mandandle him if he wanted to or just outbox him all night and could KO anytime in the fight if he catches him with a hook

Holy hell, uhh... Where have you been the last six months? Kostya fought Hatton: he lost.
onetwopunch 10-23-2005, 12:20 AM DLH will beat Tszyu easily. I cant see how Tszyu could beat a boxer like DLH, DLH is fast, smart and has good power. I see DLH ko'ing Tszyu late..maybe 9th rd TKO.

Actually he looked great physically in last fight.
josenoway 10-23-2005, 12:43 AM wow, if they could work out the details, DLH v KT would be an *insane* PPV draw, their kids's kids could retire.
ottoevans 10-23-2005, 12:46 AM Holy hell, uhh... Where have you been the last six months? Kostya fought Hatton: he lost.
hahah no u know, im saying in a rematch
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 10-23-2005, 01:00 AM * yawn *
damn, do people think kt can't box?
i like kostya over anybody at any weight he feels comfortable fighting at. the guy can fight inside, outside, you name it. he's fought boxers as well as sluggers. he's already fought so much competition, it's not like dlh will present a new challenge.
i like kt over oscar if they meet in the ring.
i'd like to see K.T vs Gatti i really dont see Gatti getting man handled like he did against Mayweather i see this getting turned into a brawl
AIR_KENG 10-23-2005, 03:23 AM "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that if I could draw 40,000 people to a non-title bout in the Philippines I could do even bigger numbers in a beautiful city like Sydney with a great champion like Kostya."
yeah right... as if you were the one that attracted all the Filipino fans to watch... nobody actually cared you were there in the first place... sucks how ths guy speaks... yes he made manny famous but he also got a lot from him... for kostya, don't deal with a crooked tooth **** face... it's not worth it... :D
I would've loved to see this fight about 8-10 yrs. ago when both were at 140lbs. I think Kostya back then would've had a legitimate shot at beating DLH or atleast it would've been his roughest fight Tszyu is a bruiser, but the brains behind team Hoya wasn't gonna have any of it, as far as putting their guy against a peaking Tszyu or any top rated guy who has some steam going, so they were okay w/ fighting the Miguel Angel Gonzales' of the world. Today Hoya is the fresher of the two I can't really hold his losses against Sturm(I thought he eeked out a W) and Hopkins(sparring session w/ some acting)those guys were just too big. You really have to take in mind Tszyu's recent medical issue as well, Hoya late round t.k.o. or U.D. but Hoya won't come out w/o some scratches.
!! Mr. Soprano 10-23-2005, 05:55 AM I hate talking conspiracies...
But de la hoya needs a big win to retire.. a win over the legendary Tszyu will seal Oscar's legacy...
Hey Kostya... I'll pay you 20 Mil if you loose Damn! that offer IS too sexy. When will I ever have such chance again
?
Think about it ;)
!! Mr. Soprano 10-23-2005, 05:57 AM But regardless... I think Oscar is too big for Tszyu..
If Tszyu takes this fight, he WILL lose and I think he knows it... so if he takes the fight, it will be for the money :(
Tszyu needs to rematch Hatton, in Sydney sounds nice

TheEvilSaint 10-23-2005, 10:34 AM this article is bull****, this fight is bull****, and whoever thought this up is full of bull****.
Parodius 10-23-2005, 11:36 AM People know I don't like DeLaHoya, but prime VS. Prime. Oscar will KO Tszyu. If they fight today, I will still favor Oscar by UD.
xzworks 10-23-2005, 11:42 AM aussie will KO DHL.
I hate talking conspiracies...

Wrong.
DLH and Tszyu were set to fight when both were at 140lbs, but Tszyu was upset by Vince Phillips.
Yeah your totally right team DLH would have none of matching DLH with top guys at that time. I mean damn he only fought Pernell Whitaker(who at the time was top 5 p4p) in his fight after Gonzales.

I remember the year of '97 like yesterday. De La Pollo chose to fight an over-the-hill Whitaker prior to Tszyu's defeat in the hands of Vince Phillips. Yeah you are right Hoto's people(Arum) would rather fight an aging great(who is more about finesse and not much of a puncher) than a badass like Tszyu. Weren't you the abortion that lived trying to compare Mexican'ts to Japanese in American society(lmfao)

God you are so pathetic it isn't even funny. This has nothing to do with being Mexican or anything this has to do with Boxing knowledge something you have none of.
Your actually tring to say Pernell Whitaker had an easier style to fight than Tszyu. You have to be kidding.
Hey cause listen if one fighter has ever ducked big strong punchers its DLH. I mean who the **** are guys like Felix Trinidad and Ike Quartey anyway.
Easy-E 10-24-2005, 03:25 AM im not sure about this fight bc im not sure about dlh's chin, can he withstand a bomb from zoo??
has oscar ever truly been hit flush by a power puncher?
these are question marks in my book

I mean who the **** are guys like Felix Trinidad and Ike Quartey anyway. You have proven my point, and you ask what race has to do with it. I gave you too much credit, I thought you were one of the few that escaped from the ranch but your just like the rest of 'em inbred ESL 4 lifers. You've completely missed my point about the whole Tszyu - Whitaker angle. Jose, lets give this one more shot, pick a desk inside your tepee and look for the sharpest edge and bang your head on it, that might wake you up and put some sense in that cabeza of yours. You bring up the loss to Vince Phillips as to why the fight never materialized, yeah 1 loss while De La Hoto was busy jacking off w/ the Kamau's, Charpentier, Camacho's(ooh a southpaw) all three rolled into 1 don't even matchup w/ Tszyu at that point in their careers, hell throw in Chavez in that mix. Yeah I give props to DLH for just walking in that ring against a starched Trinidad and what was that fight known for... De La Pollo turned mexican't from 0-60sec. and headed South for the border like he was born their... Sh*t his own fans even started booing him. For a guy who supposedly got "robbed" he sure as hell didn't seem to eager to get back what was "rightfully" his. You bring up Bazooka Quartey, he was a solid fighter nowhere near the caliber that Tszyu or Trinidad was. Lets go back to '97 and say we get a chance to sit down w/ the brains behind Hoya's career the one and only J$W, Arum hmm. if you presented him w/ 2 ideas of fighting an all-time great,over-the-hill druggie or a young gung-ho world class fighter from the Soviet Union. A fighter who has mainly made his money 'cause of his looks, who would you pick as an opponent a guy that could possibly make you miss all night, or a guy that could have you possibly laying in a hospital bed for a month waiting for his plastic surgery. Let me give you your own medicine you said that I was full of excuses about the 1st Leonard-Duran fight, but fact is fact that is was judged for Duran, well where does that put Trinidad-Hoya?
