Philadelphia Eagles star receiver Terrell Owens will miss the rest of the regular season and possibly the playoffs and Super Bowl with sprained ligaments in his right ankle and a broken fibula.

Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said Owens will have surgery to have a screw installed to stabilize the ankle joint and will stay off the leg for three weeks.

Burkholder said that Owens will be tested in three weeks and possibly could run on the leg in five weeks.

If that goes well, he said, there would be an outside chance Owens could play in the Super Bowl seven weeks from now (Feb. 6). The trainer categorized it as an outside chance but noted that "it's a game he's never played in."

Owens was hurt on the second play of the third quarter of Philadelphia's win over Dallas on Sunday when he was dragged down from behind by Roy Williams on a 20-yard reception. Owens immediately grabbed the back of his leg, which was bent backward, but left the field on his own power.

"He's a great player, but can the offense go on? Absolutely," coach Andy Reid said Monday. "We have some pretty good players on this offensive unit, so it'll still function and do very well this week."

Owens, who has 77 catches for 1,120 yards and a team-record 14 touchdowns, hobbled on the sideline, then needed help to make it into the locker room.

Owens has missed just seven games in his nine-year career. Acquired in an offseason trade, he has been a major catalyst in the Eagles' 13-1 record, providing a spark to an offense that often stagnated late in the season -- even though Philadelphia made the NFC championship game the last three years without him.

The win over Dallas gave Philadelphia home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Eagles play next Monday night at St. Louis and finish the season on Jan. 2 at home against Cincinnati. Philadelphia will open the playoffs Jan. 15 or 16.

....Two minutes before it happened my brother and I were calling for Roy to make a big hit on either McNabb or Owens to put them out for the season. We hadn't even gotten the words out of our mouths when BAM, Roy snatched his ass backwards like he has done to so many other guys and that's the end of Philly!!! The Cowboys owe them a few like that and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy than T.O. lol lol lol

So do I. I'm a giants fan so I don't want to see the eagles come anywhere near a superbowl.

That was my second team, and I was kind of rooting for them since my dolphins have no hope for the playoffs.. I still think the Eagles will find something to do.

The main reason the Eagles did not make it to the Super Bowl last year....was because BRIAN WESTBROOK, their TRUE WEAPON, went down & out in the last game of the regular season.
As long as Westbrook stays healthy, the Eagles will cruise into the Bowl. The NFC STINKS !
Their run defense (last year's achilles heel) has been completely shored up...

T.O. will unquestionably be missed, as not only is he the go-to guy....but his presence opens up the field for the other receivers/ends/backs.

Didn't someone here have a thread recently about karma? This gives you hope that maybe it does exist.

Seriously, though, the Eagles were strutting around like they'd already won the conference. Their performance against the Redkins last week was terrible. Instead of resting key players for the playoffs and working on a sound game plan to cruise them through the rest of the season injury-free, they've just played stupid, and now they're suffering the consequences.

I am an Eagles season ticket holder and don't find it funny at all. TO, like him or not, has been a model teammate to others on the team. He has helped out with charities and kids. Two years ago it was Mcnabb, last year it was Westbrook and Mcnabb, and this year it is Owens....the Eagles are cursed with injuries right before the playoffs.

....Yeah, I would feel bad for you but Owens is the biggest A-hole in pro football. When you are hated by your own peers(See San Fran) and writers who supported you in San Fran have now seen you for what you are and have also turned on you, then you must not have many redeaming qualities. He will eventually rub the Philly organization the wrong way too, that is if he eve plays again. Don't forget also that the same Eagles fans who are crying about Owens are the ones who cheered when Michael Irvin layed on the Vet turf with what turned out to be the beggining of a career ending injury. What comes around goes around. Eagle fans are the worst in the NFL and I have zero sympathy for them.

Terrel Owens....yeah, he's self-promoting pain-in-the-ass.
Irvin was one also.
But....Owens is no cokehead SCUMBAG....who raped a woman, only to have her silenced with $$$$$.
That, was IRVIN.

I was proud of my Philly brethren the day they cheered that pile
of ****'s demise.

Anyway....don't we boxing fans cheer when a fighter gets concussed ?
Who are we to judge ?

.....Yeah, Irvin was no saint but he layed it on the line for the Cowboys and all of his teamates. He was a team guy through and through. He was also willing to go across the middle and take the big hit. Something that ***** TO will never do. If Irvin was such a bad guy and the rape allegations were true do you think he would have a lucrative T.V. contract? The Philly fans would have cheered if it was Aikman and what the hell did he ever do to anyone?

Owens doesn't look afraid to anyone here !

If Aikman was whacked....we'd have cheered it intitially..but would have stopped once it was obvious it was serious.

Troy is a good guy. Irvin's a skank.

So what if Irvin has a network contract ?
Didn't ESPN give that fraud Keyshawn Johnson a short-term gig, while he was suspended for being a ***** ?
Yes, they did. Since when are networks concerned about morality ?

Owens wasn't hated by everyone in San Fran. And come to think of it, much of what he said about the Niners organization was true. What are they this year? 2-12? And Mcnabb is clearly light years better than Garcia, who has stunk up things in Cleveland.

As for Eagles fans cheering Irvin being hurt, they cheered because they thought it was a good hit on 3rd down. Most fans did not cheer, but a few idiot drunks in the 700 level did cheer when they carted him off. However, Deion was doing some weird dance in the middle of the field, and much of the crowd reaction was to that as opposed to Michael Irvin.
