View Full Version : Fighter of the Year for 2004 goes to.............
FibreOptic 12-20-2004, 12:16 PM I want to say Glen Johnson. Let's face it. He has 9 losses on his record. He seems like a push over journey man. From what I hear, 5 of his 9 losses were close decisions on his opponents home turf that probably should have gone the other way. Two of his draws should have gone his way. I did not give him a chance against Roy Jones. He kept putting on pressure and did not relax for one second and scored a 9th round KO! Some will argue that Roy Jones did nothing in that fight. Then Johnson goes up against Tarver. I was rooting for Johnson, but I figured Tarver would give him a boxing lesson. This ended up being another close fight that could have gone either way. Johnson kept putting on pressure to win a split decision. If someone told me at the start of 2004 that before the year was over, Johnson would have back to back victories against Jones and Tarver, I would have laughed in their face.
Soundtraveler 12-20-2004, 01:01 PM I agree, it goes to Johnson...
m00ks 12-20-2004, 01:27 PM RJJ allowed himself to get beat by Johnson and I felt Tarver edged him by a narrow margin. He has a strong work ethic and you can make an argument about him being fighter of the year but I would give that title to Barrera. I mean this guy came off a pretty bad loss last November against Pac and everyone thought he was shot. Came back and knocked out Paulie Ayala. Fe months later, dethrones Morales. I mean its Erik Morales! lol. Just who WASNT impressed by that perfect performance. Fighter of the year goes to MAB in my opinion.
The1God 12-20-2004, 01:41 PM A good argument can be made for Johnson, but I too was not that impressed and had Tarver up on my card. Maybe in my top 5. But as it sits right now, I give fighter of the year to Evander Holyfield....
Just kidding!!!! I give it to Kostya Tzsyu. After being gone so long, the heart and effort he puts forth in his fights. MAB is up there too. Wright did a good job this year too. Lots of great fights in 2004 even though RJJ got whacked Twice!
Jemaine Taylor is going to be 2005 fighter of the year IMO

i agree with you on barrera being fighter of the year, this guy practically came back from the dead (even tho i knew barrera wasnt finished as some people were saying) so many people wrote him off after pacman beat him and he just came back and defeated ayala and morales. considering he had to fight morales at his weight and wear gloves he wasnt used to, everything was aginst him in that fight and he still prevailed. barrera is my fighter of the year.
Boxer2005 12-20-2004, 04:12 PM I would say Johnson also.
borikua 12-20-2004, 04:22 PM Marco Antonio Barrera
jpboxer3 12-20-2004, 04:31 PM Glen Johnson actually has 3 big wins this year including a victory over Clint Wood for a World Title Belt in Woods Hometown.
Hurlex 12-20-2004, 04:33 PM its between mab and glen for me with KT in second

I would have to give it Diego Corrales. This guy beat Casamayor, knocked out Freitas, pretty good credentials.
Soundtraveler 12-20-2004, 04:34 PM Glen Johnson actually has 3 big wins this year including a victory over Clint Wood for a World Title Belt in Woods Hometown.
And that is exactly why I am voting for him, one win doesn't do it, neither does 2 but THREE big wins seals the deal in my opinion...
Xecutioner 12-20-2004, 05:00 PM i cant decide between corrales and johnson. you have to remember corrales has totally resurrected his career this year. he was coming off a loss to casamayor in 03 and avenged that loss and then knocked the fucc out of the undefeated frietas. johnson pounded out roy jones jr. (who had already been knocked the fucc out by tarver) and then beat tarver. i never rated tarver that high just for one win so it is a close call for me. if you had tarver rated highly on your pfp lists i could see people giving it to johnson over corrales but i would accept either one.
barrera definately has an outside shot. battered a finished version of ayala and also brought his career out from the dead when morales came to "fight like a mexican" and got his ass whooped by a mexican.
!! Anorak 12-20-2004, 05:44 PM John Ruiz... defended his belt successfully on two occasions.
klev1 12-20-2004, 07:30 PM 1st Glen Johnson

triggerhappy 12-20-2004, 07:37 PM when is the game due?
mic573 12-20-2004, 07:40 PM Glen Johnson actually has 3 big wins this year including a victory over Clint Wood for a World Title Belt in Woods Hometown.
I wouldn't consider the Woods fight a big win but it's between Johnson and Corrales.
Brotherfromthehoods 12-20-2004, 07:43 PM Marco Antonio Barrera
Atwa_66 12-20-2004, 07:48 PM John Ruiz... defended his belt successfully on two occasions.
John Ruiz didn't defend his belt, Don King did.
He should have lost the fight with Golota anyways.
I'm going to have to say Barrera :)
Chups 12-20-2004, 08:50 PM Diego Corrales
paulmmv 12-20-2004, 08:57 PM the fighter of the year is without a doubt vitail

Saint3605 12-21-2004, 02:13 AM I gotta go with Glen Johnson for 2004. He worked his azz off to beat a couple guys this year nobody thought he would beat.

loangunZ 12-21-2004, 04:40 AM the fighter of the year is without a doubt vitail
one fight isn't enough to be fighter of the year
Hunna 12-21-2004, 05:08 AM Many fighters each year deserve a look in at fighter of year. There are up and comers we dont even know about who may have been on a huge turn around or run of consecutive wins. On a global scale, JOHNSON, HE CAME OUT OF NOWHERE!!! FULL CREDIT TO JOHNSON! he was always a champion, its just that no-one gave him a chance, even looked at his credentials, his only KO loss was to the great Bernard Hopkins.
wissy 12-21-2004, 05:39 AM My vote goes to MAB. Johnson in a close second.
psychopath 12-21-2004, 06:46 AM My list would be: Johnson, MAB, Corales
Hudson_Hawk 12-21-2004, 07:34 AM JOHNSON! From nobody to somebody :D Now he's got a title after beating Jones and Tarver.
bigdlb12 12-21-2004, 09:11 AM Corrales, Johnson, Vitali and MAB.
Corrales for beating Casamayor in the second match after a scary 1st fight for corales and also beating the undefeated popo frietas.
Johnson, need I say more? Ko RJJ when RJJ should of had an easy fight and beating tarver in a 12 rd SD
Vitali for beating Cory Sanders and the man who KO Mike Tyson in 4,Danny Williams, stopping the two in the 8th.
MAB, after the horrible loss to Manny ,he came back to beat his Mexican rival Morales and TKO Ayala earlier this year in 10.
and of course you have Kostya T.
But my vote goes to Johnson, for doing the unthinkable
bpapa420 12-21-2004, 11:50 AM How could anyone pick a journeymen that just beat an average at best fighter as fighte of the year? So since vitaly beat up DW should he be fighter of the year for beating a bum? I guess we should give it to gatti also for beating 2 average fighters.
I think that Corrales should get the nod. He beat cassamayor and P4P favorite Freitas. Hell he made POPOP quit!!! To make journeymen johnson " WHO IS NOT EVEN THE BEST LT HEAVY" fighter of the year, just makes a mockery of how corrupt boxing really is!
trephination 12-21-2004, 11:59 AM Corrales
Trinidad
Maybe Hopkins
Sidestep_1 12-21-2004, 12:00 PM Johnson is fighter of the year. - Barerra and Corrales had a great year, Trinidad and Tszuy had great comebacks :) .

Tell me,how can a fighter that has already won a World Title and has beaten the Top2 American Lt.Heavyweights be labeled a Journeyman?
Corrales is a canidate but I think he finishes in 2nd.The Casamayor fight could have gone either way and Acelino Freitas was overrated IMO.
TheGreat1 12-21-2004, 12:59 PM this was a pretty good year for boxing.
1: MAB
2: Corrales
3: Johnson
4: Tarver (he beat roy easy, me and everyone else except those 2 judges had him ahead of Johnson.
5: Jeff Lacy
!! Anorak 12-21-2004, 03:55 PM RUIZ ??? Gotta be kidding dude  :DYeah, I was! :)
jpboxer3 12-21-2004, 04:03 PM Read this article and theres also a POLL on the right side of the page:
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/index
scramwarrior 12-21-2004, 08:14 PM Fighter of the year should go to Evander Holyfield for never giving up.
davej1006 12-21-2004, 08:47 PM I think Tarver beat Glen, and Roy lost it. Corrales clearly and convincingly beat Casamayor and Freitas. He made the undefeated Freitas say No Mas. Fighter of the year = Chico Corrales.
czars_salad 12-21-2004, 09:12 PM I would have Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales tied for the title as co-Fighters of the Year. In their third (last?) encounter, both fighters slugged it out with unmatched intensity and will power. From the opening bell 'til the last round both boxers gave everything they've got. Both threw powerful punches and both showed granite-like chins that prevented knockdowns. The fight, with all of its hype, also proved to be the fight of the year. Not a single round was a waste!
Hats off to Barrera and Morales!!!
